While talking to Ian Spelling's syndicated Inside Trek & Sci Fi column, Duchovny admits that he had his reservations about the film, initially, saying, "I can't say I was overjoyed when I realized Ivan wanted me to do a movie with aliens. I was like, `Oh, s--t.' But it's not in any way similar to The X-Files. When you see the movie, you'll see that for yourself.
"With the exception of specific comedy episodes, like the ones Darin Morgan did or the episode ('Hollywood A.D.') I wrote, X-Files is a super-serious, ponderous show that takes itself very seriously. It has to take itself seriously in order to make the preposterous reality that it's advancing work.
"Evolution is miles away from that."
Having seen the finished film, Duchovny also provides his own critique. He says, "I was scared because, if you don't laugh, it doesn't work. You can't come out of a comedy and say, `I didn't laugh once, but I thought it was really great.' I don't laugh easily, and I found myself laughing - not necessarily at myself, but at Orlando and Julianne and Dan Aykroyd and Ted Levine.
"I also liked the effects. There's a real imaginative array of creatures, from single-celled amoeba to worms to fish to rodents to lower primates to upper primates. There's not one gray alien - it's sort of a parallel evolution to what we've had on this planet. I found that to be pretty interesting.
"I just think it all comes together. It's not going to change the world. It doesn't have pretensions to be anything other than a real fun, summer, Ghostbusters type of experience."

While talking to Ian Spelling's syndicated Inside Trek & Sci Fi column, Duchovny declares, "It had been enough. It was almost a decade of my life. It was a great series and a great opportunity for me. I was lucky enough to stretch as a writer and a director. Creatively, though, I'd reached the end of my rope as an actor.
"There comes a time when you have to move on. The show could very well keep on going for 15 years, you know? I'd love to continue to do X-Files movies, to come back every now and then, but not as the sole focus of my professional life...I think it was time for me to step away."
The actor also admits that a part of him had hoped the series might end with his exit. Duchovny explains, saying, "But the more mature part of me realizes that this is a business, and everybody wants to continue to make money and be creative and do more shows and introduce new characters. So you just have to talk to that 6-year-old inside you that's going, `It's my ball. I'm taking it and going home.' You have to say, `Well, it's everybody's ball at this point. Good luck to them.'"

Fox is expected to announce that it has sealed a deal for a ninth season of The X-Files, though it's unclear what role creator Chris Carter will play, Variety reported. Sources told the trade paper that the show will definitely return, as had been hoped. Fox unveils its fall schedule on May 17 to advertisers in New York.
While Fox negotiates with Carter, the trade paper reported that the network is prepared to promote producers Frank Spotnitz and Vince Gilligan to run the show if Carter does not return.
The Reuters news service, meanwhile, reported that X-Files star David Duchovny, who curtailed his role as Fox Mulder this season, won't return next year, except for an occasional cameo.
The 11th-hour negotiations mirror those last year, when uncertainty over Duchovny's involvement in the series raised doubts about its future. The eighth-season finale airs May 20.
After a repeat of last year's down-to-the-wire negotiations with ``X-Files'' creator-producer Chris Carter about the show's future, Fox has locked in the series for a ninth season as part of the network's upcoming fall schedule.
``The X-Files will be on the schedule that we're announcing (Thursday)'' at the network's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York, the spokesman said.

The X-Files' Robert Patrick told The Daily Show that he won't reprise his role as a killer cyborg in the upcoming Terminator 3 movie, the Dark Horizons Web site reported.
While talking to TV Guide Online, Davis spoke of his character, saying, "[My fate] was left deliberately ambiguous. At the end of the season, they really didn't know if the series would be continuing. Once they found that it was, they didn't want to engage the new character [Doggett] in the old stories... so they've gone in a different direction... I don't know what their thoughts are now on those loose ends, including me at the bottom of the stairs!"
He adds, "Even if I am dead, most of the dead ones come back for some kind of haunting story in somebody's mind. God knows, Deep Throat's been back several times, X has... It's certainly doable."
TV Guide notes that when Chris Carter was asked about the possibility of CSM coming back, the show's executive producer and creator said that it's "dependent on if there's a ninth season."

He adds, "He's going to go one of these days. [He'll go] ballistic on somebody. I keep saying that to Frank [producer Frank Spotnitz] and the guys, 'When are you going to let me loose?' They keep going, 'It's just better to keep it in check.'"
Regarding the second part of the series finale, all the actor will say is, "I can't let the surprise away. It's gonna leave you still questioning. They do that all the time. That's the magic and the brilliance of The X-Files, don't you think?"

While talking to columnist Ian Spelling's Inside Trek & Sci Fi syndicated column, Patrick touched upon what lies ahead in the eighth season two-part finale as well as his take on a possible ninth season.
The two-parter starts on May 13th under the title of "Essence" followed by the finale, "Existence" a week later.
So, what can we expect? Patrick reveals, "Adam Baldwin is back as my informant, Agent Crane (Kirk B.R. Woller) is back, Duffy Haskell (Jay Acovone) and Krycek (Nick Lea) are back, Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) are around, and a new character played by Frances Fisher is in, but I can't tell you what she plays or what the character does."

"Still, as much as The X-Files typically leaves volumes unsaid, after eight years no one should under-estimate the strength of the bond between Mulder and Scully. "I think they mean everything to each other," affirms Spotniz. "They love each other, on a profound level such is rarely found in life. I think people sense that, and that's why they love these two characters and they love them together. They'd do anything for each other. They're soul mates."
