07/21/02 Marvel Vs. Capcom I suppose to keep with the "comic theme" it would be a good idea to do something at least remotely comic related. The original plan a long while back was to do Spider-man but hey, whatever. In a world of 3D fighting games, some games dare to keep with the old ideas that gave us such great fighting games like Super Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat, they keep the "2D" in "2D Fighting Games". One such game is Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. However this is not about a game. It's about a war between two companies that produce merchandaise that has pretty much nothing to do with each other. There are a few things that comes to mind that ARE similar between the comics of Marvel and the games of Capcom. Inconsistancy on storylines is one, the need to bring back dead characters without any sort of explanation, or maybe the need to make spinoffs of all sorts from thier products. These two are different yet the same in many ways. We can use two popular lines to compare. For Marvel we will use "The X-Men". For Capcom we'll let Mega Man stand in. For X-Men we have numerous different universes and timelines such as Age of Apocalypse or Days of Future Past. Mega Man of course has the main series, Mega Man X, Mega Man Legends, Mega Man Battle Network, plus a few others that more or less fit in various places. Marvel has killed off heroes such as Jean Gray only to bring them back when they feel the need, capcom of course has Zero, who seems to be in a perpetual state of leaping in and out of death. And these are not the only series in which these concepts show up. There is the whole Street Fighter series for Capcom, MArvel has numerous super heroes and super hero groups. Plus both have cross over specials a lot and cameos by charachters in other series. The final note is that there is more to this match up than meets the eye. Also with the advent of games that merge these two properties do we considere Capcom characters to be part of the Marvel universe or Marvel characters to be part of the Capcom universe?
