07/14/02 MP3 Names I was going to call this article something like "LOOK YOU STUPID FUCKING RETARD DON'T RENAME THE FILE NAMES OF YOUR MP3S OR I WILL KICK YOUR ASS TO FUCKING HADES AND BACK" but I have to make them short enough to fit in the little table of contents bar. Anyway, I can still put the secondary title down here like I did so no real loss. The easiest was to explain what I'm talking about here is to give a few examples and explain just what is wrong with each one. Pink Floyd - Hey You (Acoustic).mp3 Case number one. You see there seems to be nothing much wrong with this MP3 at first glance. Till you play it. Then you realize it's not really acoustic, it's live. For those who are saying to yourselves "acoustic is live" I would suggest you shut the fuck up and slap yourself over the head with a dictionary. One of those huge Oxford ones too preferably, right on your fucking face would be nice as well. EMINEM---STAN (LIVE AT THE GRAMMYS).mp3 Case 2, All caps is fucking retarded. Please don't do it. it looks hideously ugly and 99% of all other MP3s don't use it. Eminem-My Name Is(UNCENSORED VERSION, DIRTY).mp3 Another case (3) of abusing the parenthesis. Look, you may think it's "kewl" to listen to sweary music and all but no one really fucking cares and there is no need to announce it to the world with a huge ugly tag. if you insist you can put "uncensored" but really the tag should go on the censored version not the normal one. Tags are for variants ok people. Legitimate variants. Things to put in tags include: soundtrack titles on tracks that need it (too much detail for this, basically the Blink 182 track on the latest teen movie does not need it, the obscure classical piece from that military flick probably does); live, acoustic, remix; remixed by ; or maybe a few other places I'm forgetting. Presidents of the USA- Video Killed The Radio Star.mp3 Case 4. This one really irritates me the most. I've had it on a few other tracks but not to the extent that this one has gone through it. For the love of whatever deity you choose, DO NOT RENAME THE ARTIST ON A TRACK. And to a lesser extent, the SONG TITLE. you see, creating an MP3 generally requires a CD. There are other methods but they are much less viable and are probably only going to be used by people with good naming etiquette. Anyway, making MP3s generally requires a CD and chances are the person who is making the MP3, not only knows who the artist is and what the song title is, but they probably also have the CD case right there to double check. The person who names the MP3 sure as hell knows more about who it is than you do. Just because you think to yourself "this sounds like BAND NAME HERE does not mean it was done by BAND NAME HERE. Chances are they just, sound alike for one reason or another. As for this particular MP3, I came across a dozen copies of this one track all claiming to be done by a different artist ranging from Pearl Jam to Everclear. After extensive research, I have found this one is done my the Presidents of the USA (or possibly it's some sort of mega group collaboration thing). As for Song titles, for the slow witted out there, song titles don't have to be the choros or the phrase that is repeated most during a track. In fact the song title doesn't even have to appear in the lyrics anywhere. granted it is a very common practice to do that, it is not always true. Hell I knew a guy aty school who named his copy of "Metallica - Turn the Page.mp3" to "Metalica - On the Road Again.mp3" and he was firmly under the impression it was a cover of the Willie Nelson song of the same name. It is in fact a cover of "Bob Seger - Turn the Page.mp3" not "Willie Nelson - On the Road Again.mp3". (Just a note, in fact checking I've come across one titled "Bob Seger - Here I Go On the Road Again.mp3" which is a fine example of what I'm complaining about.) I'm sure I'm forgetting something in this little space but it doesn't really matter if you will just remember one simple point. DO NOT RENAME YOUR FUCKING MP3S.
