Herbert is almost religious in the stringency of his recycling practices. He spends a great deal of time separating and categorizing his trash, and even leaves little helpful notes on the subject for the sanitation worker.

The sanitation worker in charge of Herbert's block is normally a gentle and conscientious man. However, Herbert's constant overflow of recyclables and compulsive separation of trash into more and more elaborate categories slowly chip away at his patience.

The 24th helpful little note he receives in two weeks finally pushes him over the edge. He starts mixing Herbert's recyclables in with the regular garbage. Eventually, he develops such a disdain for Herbert's practices that he deliberately sabotages recycling efforts all over the city.

So it actually makes little difference when one of Herbert's milk cartons falls out of the bin and lands on the side of the road, except for the caterpillars that are trapped inside and killed, which will eventually lead to the destruction of the community garden by aphids.

The sanitation worker's shoddy recycling practices are exposed by a local reporter during an undercover sting, and he is summarily fired.

He becomes a pariah in the community, and is unable to find a new job.

He is eventually discovered hanging from the rafters of his woodshed by a group of local children.
