Mount Caburn and the South Downs - From Lewes to Southease, via Firle

This walk takes in the most pleasing features of the Sussex countryside: unspoilt villages, undulating chalky downland and a fine pub. From the busy town of Lewes, it climbs Mount Caburn, with its Iron Age earthworks, then descends to the idyllic villages of Glynde and Firle, both complete with cricket greens and delightful seventeenth – and eighteenth – century buildings. From Firle there is a great detour through the grounds of Firle Place and across the fields to Charleston Farmhouse, the country retreat of the Bloomsbury Group. Beyond Firle, a steep path leads up onto the downs, with the South Downs Way running east for 5 km along a high ridge to the village of Southease, from where there are trains to Lewes.
