ISLE OF PURBECK

WEEKEND 22.9. – 23.9. 2007

Isle of Purbeck though not actually an island, it does have an insular and distinctive feel. It can be a difficult destination to reach, but its villages are immensely pretty, no more so than Corfe Castle, with its majestic ruins. Dorset Coast Path provides access to the oily shales of Kimmeridge Bay, the spectacular cove at Lulworth and the much-photographed natural arch of Durdle Door.

PROGRAM

Saturday 22nd

·         Walk (6km) to the hostel (please consider this when packing your rucksack

and asses well the necessity of things you carry with you)

·         Signing in

·         Walk (10 km) along the coast and evening chill out on the beach

HighlightsLulworth Cove, a perfect shell-shaped bite formed when the sea broke through a weakness in the cliffs and then gnawed away at them from behind, forming a circular cave which eventually collapsed to leave a bay enclosed by sandstone cliffs.

Stair Hole is a roofless sea cave riddled with arches that will eventually

                    collapse to form another Lulworth.

Durdle Door, the famous limestone arch appeals to serious geologist

                    and casual sightseer alike.
