Another exercise in 3D modeling, the chess set was
another excellently fun project operated through CorelDream3D. I used all
the basic knowledge gained through the tutorial and the castle to assemble
this chess set entirely from scratch. I started with a base unit of one square,
and constructed the base tiles. I made two tiles and applied separate shaders
of gold and silver to them. Then I grouped the two tiles together and formed
them into a row of eight and grouped that. I duplicated the rows until I
had eight of them, and grouped them together to make the the entire checkerboard.
Then I created the Edge pieces, duplicated them, and fitted them to the edges
of the checkerboard. I used another single 1x1 square with a different shading
for the corner pieces.
Next came the individual pieces. The method I used involved creating one
of each type of piece and duplicating it and applying different shaders to
make all the pieces necessary. For example, I would make one pawn, duplicate
it with one side's shader, and then duplicate it with the other side's shader.
This way I only actually constructed one pawn, but it applied to the entire
game. Each different type of piece is identifiable due to each having a different
shaped base. Pawns have square bases, Kings have round bases, queens have
diamond bases, and so on. After each piece was created, duplicated and shaded,
I placed them each individually on the correct square and grouped the entire
thing together. This is the result:
