Cooking

Cooking is a favorite time of the week for the children. Actually, this should be named a food experience time, because we rarely cook our food.  During this time the children will be experiencing science, math, sharing, tasting, chemical changes, and measurement.
Most weeks the children will come and mix their own portion of food and then eat it. At times we need to mix everyone's food together, then divide it up to eat. Everyone likes to help prepare, as well as eat. I will post the recipes, because children like to fix at home what we have served at school. Usually you will have the ingredients at home, but sometimes you may have to buy an item. The children will love fixing food for their whole family. Just try it, you will like it!

The first week for "cooking" we peeled carrots. Everyone got to peel some, which was a  new experience for some children. After I cut them up, everyone tried some. Some children who said they did not like carrots ended up eating 4 or 5. Seeing others eating them, can change opinions.

We made our own lemonade this week. Each child made their own cup full. We used 2 t. of  lemon juice, 2 t. sugar, and 1/4 c. of water with 1 ice cube.

This week we made buses using a graham cracker, mini Oreos, and Rice Chex for the windows. They tasted delicious!

We are studying bears this week, so we made something that a bear might like--cinnamon toast. We  found out that we loved it too!  Yum!

Bring on the cinnamon and sugar.

While studying nuts, we made our own peanut butter by cracking the peanuts, removing the red skins, grinding them up in a blender, spreading the peanut butter on crackers, then eating the cracker sandwiches we made. Cracking the peanuts was the best part. Kindergartners love this part. Each one has his/her own technique. We allowed them all, expect cracking with your teeth. We try not to spread germs!

The children love the Christmas reindeer, so we made reindeer sandwiches. of Of course they tasted great!

We made Christmas pudding the last week of school before the holidays. It was really green!

Here the children are eating fruit salad. Everyone brought a fruit and we mixed it together and enjoyed the results.
