History of VIOLET UK

1997 - September 22, X JAPAN breaks up, but Yoshiki secretly plans with hide to reunite the band in 2000 without Toshi.

1998 - May 2, hide dies of suicide, putting the nail in the coffin of X JAPAN. Yoshiki goes into a three year depression of not performing or composing music. This halts all projects he was working on.

2000 - Yoshiki announced that he was returning to music with his new project called VIOLET UK. He said that he'd been working on this project for about 10 years. Then he got a call from the convince store chain 7-Eleven to produce a series of commercials for them featuring VIOLET UK in Japan. Since then, VIOLET UK has been a highly anticipated project worldwide for both music and the visual media that will come from it. Yoshiki goes on to compose a song for the Emperor of Japan, the song is deemed "Anniversary."

2002 - Yoshiki holds VIOLET UK's official live debut at the symphonic concert in Tokyo that he held. Also in 2002, Yoshiki releases The Last Live DVD by X JAPAN that features a promotional video at the end for VIOLET UK. The VIOLET UK album is postponed for the first time. It won't be the last time.

2003 - Yoshiki signs a Japanese Hawaiian Female Vocalist to his Extasy Records label as his pop protage. He tells her to go under the name of Dahlia. A few months later, she releases her debut single produced & written by Yoshiki called "I'll be your love." The song becomes the official theme of the Expo in Japan. It is also known at this time that VIOLET UK was just a 3-piece with Yoshiki, Nicole and Sara (from RedDelicious). The VIOLET UK album was then moved to a 2003 release, but like it was in 2002, it was postponed yet again.

2004 - Daughter comes into the VIOLET UK mix adding a third female vocalist.

2005 - Yoshiki releases "Eternal Melody II" in March. The follow up to his 1993 classical album of the same name. The first track on it is the first officially released fullly finished studio song by VIOLET UK. The song was originally titled "7th" and it was penned after the event of 9/11 by Yoshiki. On EMII, it's under the name of "Unnamed Song." Also in March, Yoshiki releases the Symphonic Concert on DVD that features VIOLET UK. In April, Yoshiki announces, while in Japan promoting the two new releases, that VIOLET UK will finally debut this year on September 22 2005.... the same day X JAPAN broke up on back in 1997.

The name VIOLET UK comes from the idea that when you mix colors you'll end up with Violet. Indeed there are many different music genres combined. The UK part stands for Underground Kingdom, according to Yoshiki. All the lyrics for VIOLET UK will be in English. At the core of the Violet UK project is the music. It blends digital drum-loops, a touch of classical piano and strings and noise guitar. Female vocalists finish off this radical new sound.

Some of VIOLET UK's released demos include:

White Poem II

Below are the lyrics to "Unnamed Song" from Eternal Melody II, transcribed by myself.

Lyrics typed up by [email protected]

I'm standing on the edge
coming to my senses
from a reveree
never though I would
never thought I'd need to
never say goodbye
I bid you farewell
my voiceless words are swaying the flame

I can't live without (x2)
I can't live without you
here in the dark
I whisper your name over again
Give me the strength to seize the light
If I should find a way
I saw a dream
You were flying in the sky without a fear
never touch the ground
never came to my side
I tried so hard to reach out for your hand
the ruthless word kept your soul away

I can't live without
I cant give without
I can't breathe without you here in the world
Do you feel the rain?
The love takes no pain
With or without the sun
The lurid sky still tearing me apart

Should let freedom reign all over the plain
Give me the strengh to leave the words
that love will find a way
I can't live without
I cant give without you here in the world
Do you feel the rain?
all over the plain
Give me the strengh to leave the words
that love will find the way
With or without the sun
I'll be but I won't say goodbye cause I,
I know I'll be with you
