Spiral Wrapping

Spiral wrapping is an elegant and decorative way to fasten hair. It is especially nice on small accect braids, which tend to get over powered by even the smallest commercial hair ties.

1. Cut a 8-10 length of string/yarn/embroidery floss.

2. Loop one end over (about 2 inches) so that you have a long tail and a short one.

3. Place the loop against your braid, so that the rounded part of the loop is at the top.(picture to the left)

4. Wind the long tail around and around the braid working your way up until you either run out of tail or there's only about a 1/2 inch of loop still above the spirals...leave about an inch of the short tail out where you can get at it later. (picture to the right).

5. Slip the end of the long tail through the loop (picture on the left).

6. Then, pull the short tail until the loop disappears and pulls part of the long tail under the wrap...don't pull too hard, you want everything to be contained under the wrap.

7. Snip the two tails so they don't show.

Once you've mastered the basic technique, you can do fancier end treatments on your braids such as adding beads, bells, trinkets or fringes.
