Husband's Notes
[UL:FROM THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY HISTORY:UL] ORMSBY,EDWARD ARTHUR was born in Cumberland Co., Ill. Oct. 15,1866. In 1886 he married Leena Neeley. They had two children Lelia Mae and Harold Basil. Harold Basil married Jesse Marie Hill, the daughter of Charles Taylor Hill of Casey, Ill. in 1916. They had two sons, Charles Victor born Apr. 1, 1917 and Donald Edward born Dec 30, 1918. Harold died in Toledo, Ill. in 1919 and Jesse took the two children to Toledo, Ohio. Edward A. Ormsby served as county treasurer of Cumberland Co. from 1917 to 1920. He took an active interest in Republican politics until his death in 1936. Mr. Ormsby founded Oak Grove Lodge in 1921. For the first two summers meals were served on the front porch and the front room of his home. Being successful in this venture he decided to expand and in 1923 began building a series of log cabins in a large grove of trees, mostly oak and hickory. Each cabin had the name of a President. The dining room, also long became fanmous for country cured ham, which was cured on the premises, and country fried chicken. People came from as far away as Effingham, Terre Haute and Mattoon for Sunday dinner. About 1930 another building was added for a pottery display and several kinds of art and garden pottery were on display for sale. The business was somewhat seasonal and many of the local school teachers worked during the summer break. Oak Grove Lodge was known as a tourist court and was the first of it's kind between Indianapolis, Ind. and Kansas City, Misouri. Lelia Mae Ormsby graduated from the University of Illinois and became a teacher for some time and taught at both Greenup and Casey, Ill. In 1924 she became actively engaged in Oak Grove Lodge. In 1928 she married Robert H. Baker of Lerna, Ill. and they assumed management of the entire business, Mr Baker had two sons by a previous marriage: Robert Gale and James Harold. The boys helped with the business during the summer months and attended school at Casey, Ill. graduating from high school in 1934 and 1938 respectively. In 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Baker became divorced, Mr. Baker returning to Lerna, Ill. and Mrs. Baker remaining at Oak Grove Lodge. This she managed till her death in Jan 1954. During this time Mrs. Baker became prominent in local civic activities. In 1952 she set up a perpetual trust for a "Good Citizenship Award" to be given annually to an outstanding pupil in the Cumberland High School. Charles Victor Ormsby came to Oak Grove Lodge in 1930 to live with his grandparents and attended school at Casey, Ill. graduating in 1936. Donald joined the Air Force in 1941 and later went back to Toledo, Ohio where he still lives. Victor remained at Oak Grove Lodge after high school except for four years spent in Chicago, Ill. (1941-1945). In 1954 at Mrs. Baker's death he assumed ownership of Oak Grove Lodge. In 1956 he built a modern motel on the original site. This was destroyed by fire in 1964. Victor was married Oct. 31, 1937 to Dorothy Myrtle Sanders daughter of George Washington and Emma Mieure Sanders of Robinson, Ill. They have three sons: George Edward born Oct. 18, 1945; Charles Allen born Jan 18, 1949; and Leonard Ray born Dec. 16, 1956. George Edward married Janice Earlene Hudson daughter of George and Geneva Hudson of Casey, Ill. on July 9, 1965.
