Following is a posting that I may place on the groups in order to encourage advertisements. Your comments are welcomed:
Dear Jewish Groups subscriber,
We can no longer continue to run these Jewish Groups as before. We are asking for your help to keep the groups alive. Please read this letter carefully and entirely.
Jewish Groups is the largest and most effective set of groups for Jews on the Internet. Yet, after seven years, we are at a crossroad.
Advertising on the Internet has not been a windfall for anyone. You know it, and we know it. More importantly you have proven it by ignoring our efforts to recruit advertisements.
Internet advertising is interruptive and distracting yet, for an Internet communication and content company, it has been the traditional means of generating revenue. If you walked into the grocery store, in a hurry to purchase milk, bread, and eggs, and a stock boy grabbed you by the arm and kept distracting you from your list, trying to sell you fertilizer, you'd be furious. You would eventually quit coming to the store, ignore the help, or whack the stock boy.
Advertising on Jewish Groups shares some of the same distracting elements as the example above. The Groups are like your grocery store.
We can no longer continue to support the groups on our own resources, without advertising. Although we cannot promise that advertising will help the advertiser, we have no choice but to reach out to the public for support.
So, what should we do? I spend about 70 hours per week working on these groups - at the expense of my day job. However, I do have to support the family.
These groups are a good idea. They have proven their effectivebness. You know that, and that is hwy you belong to them.
We also have numerous support websites that help keep the groups going. No, they were not prepared professionally, but they certainly do their job. They took years of work to achieve the level that they have reached now. You can see a list of these websites at http://www.geocities.com/tzafun/Websites/Intro.html">this resource.
Jewish Groups is worth more than one visit to a Kosher restaurant per month - and it has far fewer calories. If you're not convinced of that, then we're in the wrong business.
For better or for worse, our decision is clear. We need your subscription to Jewish groups - and we are asking for it. No, we won't throw anybody off the groups if they don't pay. We realize taht some of those who benefit most from the groups are in the least position to help. However, we will certainly appreciate those who do help us.
Sincerely,
