The Codoj home zone is small, containing just one binary star system orbited by a single gas giant. The zone is low tech/medium magic Biological/Life Force. Its biggest quirk is that it is impossible to get any drive systems to work well there. Upon entering the zone, drives level to about the same efficiency as a light sail, which can get you accross the zone in a couple of months, and is definitely not sufficient to get you back accross the quantum wall. Fortunately, a device is now available which will get you accross the wall, although it is not a drive system, so you will be able to exit the zone if you enter it. Both the drive leveling effect and the device are discussed in the technology overview and in the history section.
The second most interesting thing about the Codoj home zone is that, despite not having any terrestrial planets or moons, it harbors abundant native life, including numerous sentient species. Life in this zone is theorised to have evolved in the rings of the gas giant, living in the various chunks of rock and ice to be found there. Since then, things have progressed to the point that virtually every asteroid and comet in the system has been consumed, leaving behind great conglomerations of plants and other living organisms, meshed together in almost self-sustaining ecologies. This is not to say that the zone is filled with life, the individual colonies are just as widely scattered as the original asteroids and comets were.
The Life Force type magic of this zone (often called 'druidical magic') allows the most skilled practitioners to perform genetic engineering, and dozens of species have been uplifted or otherwise modified over the centuries. This serves to partially explain the speed of evolution in this zone and the diversity of the native sentients.
The sentients living on the colonies have learned to use light-sails to move their homes, allowing them to find new comets and asteroids to colonize, and to visit other colonies for trade or war. They call their homes 'ship-states', and each one can be considered to be an independant nation within the empire.
After making first contact, the various ship-states, realizing that they still had more in common with each other than with the various empires outside their zone, banded together to form the Coalition of Dominions of Jath. The government is very young, and has little real power, due to the reluctance of the ship-states to give up any of their autonomy. It is more of a token attempt to present a united front to the rest of the galaxy than a true governing body.
In addition to the native sentients, there is a small community of humans in the Codoj empire descended from waverunners and other explorers who were trapped in the zone before the discovery of the device which allows ship-states to cross a quantum wall.
