Smash For *NSYNC Is Icing On The Cake For Marx's Hitmaking Career
(12.08) Source - Popcentric: Hes had a slew of major radio hits, sold millions of albums and played to crowds of fans around the globe. But what most elevated Richard Marx in the eyes of his three young sons was having the superstar boy band *NSYNC record one of his songs.
"My kids are HUGE into *NSYNC," Marx says. "Theyve met them all, and know what great guys they are."
Marxs song 'This I Promise You,' a tender love ballad, is shaping into a huge hit for *NSYNC, at both top-40 and adult-contemporary radio.
He wrote the song for a promising vocal trio of young Latin sisters he spotted performing at a wedding reception and wanted to help out. Shortly after that collaboration fell through, *NSYNCs record label called Marx looking for a song for the groups second album.
"It was just great timing, just one of those strokes of lightning," Marx, 37, says, who not only wrote but also produced *NSYNCs recording of 'This I Promise You.'

TICKET: Your new single ("Days in Avalon") is really strong. Is it getting a lot of airplay?
RICHARD MARX: "Radio is really starting to do well with it. Its kind of like starting from scratch; Ive been gone for three and a half years. But I think radio wants a song like this. Im really proud of it and this whole new album. Its really fun to sing live. The good new is that Ive got three songs in the AC (adult contemporary) top 25: *NSYNC, Natalie Cole (the Marx-penned 'Angel On My Shoulder') and my own. The bad news is Im in third place."
So what was it like working with *NSYNC?
"I took a plane to Orlando. Id never met them but from some things Id heard, I thought Id have to use a lot of studio trickery in the recording. But I can tell you, all five of them sing great. It was painless. They were very patient, diligent guys and theyve got a great work ethic. They treated me with such respect. I could spend an hour telling you how great they are. Ive been writing with JC (Chasez of *NSYNC) for the next record. He told me the first song he ever sang was 'Right Here Waiting.'"
Will you be singing "This I Promise You" at your concert here?
"You know, I wasnt going to. But I was doing a show out in L.A. and I played a snippet of it on the piano and people went nuts! And it is a top five single, so yes, I will."

Fox News Enlists Fans In Online Survey
(12.08) Source - Foxnews: Fox News, in an online voting tally, wants to know which overhyped artist you would want to banish from 2001. Choices include Eminem, Christina Aguilera, *NSYNC, Britney Spears and Madonna. Eminem has taken the lead in the online survey, Madonna trailing in last place. It appears the loud-mouthed rapper still can't compete with the bubbly, pop music of his competitors. To cast your vote, surf on over to Foxnews.com!

Heavyweight Boy Band Wars Continue: Backstreet Boys vs. *NSYNC
(12.08) Source - Popcentric: Two members of the Backstreet Boys, Kevin Richardson and Nick Carter, have made a verbal attack against *NSYNC.
The boys claim in the latest issue of Live And Kicking magazine that their band have had to do all the grafting, whilst their rivals have just followed their lead.
They are also bitter that their management company created *NSYNC while the Backstreet Boys were on a world tour.
Nick raged, "I think if there wasnt a Backstreet Boys there wouldnt have been an *NSYNC. No one has any idea how hard we had to work in Europe to make it."
Kevin added, "We dont have anything against them personally but it is annoying to me how they came to be."
"Our management company created *NSYNC in our image once we were successful."
He continued, "They went to all the same producers, on all the same tours and met all the same people. In the end it was like all the doors we kicked open, they just walked through."
Certainly *NSYNC have been successful picking up four US Billboard awards earlier this week. Their 'No Strings Attached' album also shifted 2.4 million copies in its first week of release, a record for the fastest selling album.

Hit Artists Hard At Work On New Material
(12.08) Source - Billboard: While recognizing the accomplishments of releases from the music world's top talent was the goal of the Billboard Music Awards earlier this week, backstage, everyone from Sisqo to Sheryl Crow was talking about what they're working on right now.
Artist of the year and current Billboard Hot 100 chart topping trio Destiny's Child is working on a new album that could be out as soon as February. Although the act's Beyonce Knowles said that she's "happily anticipating" the challenge of her much-ballyhooed solo outing (which she's not expected to begin until 2002 at the earliest), she asserted that her "absolute focus will remain taking Destiny's Child to the greatest heights possible. This group is so important to me. We've been through [so much] up to this point, and we're so invested in each other. We're like sisters, and nothing's going to change that."
Sisqo, who snared six awards, laid to rest rumors about a new album from his former group Dru Hill. "We're not recording anything right now," he said. "There have been ego clashes, and unfortunately, we couldn't pull together. But we're working on each other's projects, and hopefully, we can solve our differences and do another album together." In addition to forthcoming solo albums by members Jazz and Woody, Sisqo says he's recording a new solo album, "Return Of The Dragon," slated for a spring 2001 release.
Award-winning show co-hosts *NSYNC have already begun writing material for the follow-up to their Jive smash album "No Strings Attached." "We're ready to break out with some cool new ideas and concepts," said the group's Justin Timberlake. "This is the fun part. We're at the point where we feel like we can experiment a little. Obviously, we can't stray too far from our core sound. But we watch artists like Madonna and Janet Jackson remain familiar but fresh, and we're optimistic that we can pull it off."

*NSYNC To Hit Studio In January
(12.07) Source - MTV: *NSYNC will head into a Florida studio in January to begin experimenting with new music for their fourth album, the group said Tuesday.
"We're going to spend January and February in there and see what we can come up with," member Justin Timberlake said on the red carpet at the Billboard Music Awards.
*NSYNC plan to work primarily in their Florida homeland but may move out of state as the project progresses, Joey Fatone said.
Though the members of *NSYNC vow to do more songwriting and producing this time around, they said they hope to team up again with No Strings Attached collaborators She'kspere and Richard Marx. She'kspere produced "It Makes Me Ill," while Marx wrote and produced "This I Promise You," which recently peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
"Just being in the studio with Richard Marx was such a cool feeling, 'cause he's someone I listened to when I was younger and looked up to," Fatone said.
Timberlake said the group isn't sure whether it'll release a fourth single from March's No Strings Attached, which is certified 10 times platinum.
In other *NSYNC news, Timberlake recently joined Brian McKnight for a duet on "My Kinda Girl," a track on the R&B crooner's next album, due in the spring.
"He's easy," McKnight told reporters at Tuesday's awards show. "Exactly how you see him on TV that's exactly how he is for real. He wants to give to everybody. He's not one of these guys who's so successful that he knows everything. He still wants to learn; he still wants to absorb everything. I think he's going to be around for a very, very long time."
The as-yet-untitled LP will be McKnight's first to feature guest artists; Stevie Wonder also makes an appearance.

*NSYNC Hype Their Next Album
(12.07) Source - LiveDaily: *NSYNC is heading back into a Florida studio in January to begin work on the follow up to "No Strings Attached." Justin Timberlake said Tuesday night at the Billboard Music Awards that the group is planning to reteam with "No Strings" producers She'kspere ("It Makes Me Ill") and Richard Marx ("This I Promise You"). "Just being in the studio with Richard Marx was such a cool feeling, 'cause he's someone I listened to when I was younger and looked up to," gushed member Joey Fatone.

*NSYNC Hype Their Next Album
(12.07) Source - Marie Claire: The latest issue of Marie Claire Magazine poses pop superstar Justin Timberlake of *NSYNC campaigning to acquire sensible gun control laws passed in Congress. The *NSYNC-er tells Marie Claire, "When the constitution was drafted, AK-47s didn't exist. Now, at the very least, people should support safety locks for guns." The 19-year-old heartthrob urges teens to support gun control & get involved. Supporters can add their name to a Handgun Control petition to urge Congress to pass sensible gun control laws. Among the measures it calls for requiring all gun dealers to conduct background checks, regulating the gun industry for consumer safety measures, and reauthorizing the federal assault weapons ban before it expires in 2004.

McKnight Talks New Album Backstage At Billboard Awards
(12.06) Source - Allstar: Brian McKnight let the world in on a secret from his new album. The R&B crooner hopped into a studio with *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake recently to record a track titled "My Kind of Girl" for the as-yet-untitled effort. McKnight had nothing but nice things to say on working with the teen heartthrob. "He's easy," said McKnight. "Exactly the way you see him how he is on TV, that's exactly how he is for real. He wants to give to everybody and he's not one of these guys who are so successful that he knows everything. He still wants to learn. He still wants to absorb everything. That's why I think he's gonna be around for a very, very long time." McKnight also has a duet with Stevie Wonder on the album as well.

Sisqo Tops 2000 Billboard Music Awards Winner's List
(12.06) Source - LiveDaily: Sisqo was the big winner at Tuesday night's (12/5) 2000 Billboard Music Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, where the "Thong Song" creator won awards in six categories, according to Billboard. Other acts that scored multiple awards included Destiny's Child, Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, *NSYNC, Britney Spears and 3 Doors Down, but all trailed behind the Dru Hill singer. The awards were based on the compilation of Billboard's December 1999-December 2000 chart data, which measures record sales and radio airplay, according to Billboard.
Members of *NSYNC - who co-hosted the event with comedian Kathy Griffin - picked up four awards as well, including the Top 40 Artist of the Year honor. The group received a special award for setting the highest one-week sales record with its latest album, "No Strings Attached" (Jive) which sold 2.4 million copies in its first week of release earlier this year. The album won Billboard's Album of the Year award.
Britney Spears won the Albums Artist of the Year title, and was also given a special award for the biggest first-week sales of any female performer; "Oops! ...I Did It Again" (Jive) sold 1.3 million copies in its first week out earlier this year.
Other winners included Christina Aguilera (Artist of the Year, Female), Pink (New Artist of the Year, Female), machbox twenty's Rob Thomas (Hot 100 Songwriter of the Year) and Creed (Rock Artist of the Year).
In addition to the special awards given to *NSYNC and Spears, singer-songwriter Randy Newman was presented with the Century Award for creative achievement. Previous winners of the award include James Taylor, Carlos Santana, Billy Joel and George Harrison, according to Billboard.

Sisqo Shines At 2000 Billboard Music Awards
(12.05) Source - Allstar: Sisqo unleashed the dragon on all the competition at the 2000 Billboard Music Awards, held Tuesday (Dec. 5) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, taking home six awards to top the evening's field.
The purveyor of thongs walked away with awards for Male Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year, Male Hot 100 Artist of the Year, R&B/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, New R&B/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, and Male R&B/Hip-Hop Artist of the Year.
Son by Four owned the Latin categories to finish a close second to Sisqo as the Puerto Rican four-piece snagged the Latin Tracks Artist of the Year award as well as the Latin Track of the Year, Latin Pop Track of the Year, Tropical/Salsa Track of the Year, and Hot Latin Track for "A Puro Dolor."
The Dixie Chicks, Destiny's Child, and *NSYNC fell next in line with four awards each. The Dixie Chicks took home Country Artist of the Year, Country Duo/Group of the Year, Country Album of the Year (Fly), and the Country Albums Artists of the Year. Destiny's Child won for Artist of the Year, Duo/Group of the Year, Hot 100 Singles Artist of the Year, and Hot 100 Singles Duo/Group of the Year. *NSYNC garnered nods for Album of the Year (No Strings Attached), Albums Artist Duo/Group of the Year, Top 40 Artist of the Year, and a special award for biggest one-week sales of an album (No Strings Attached). 3 Doors Down and Faith Hill scored three awards each.
This year's show, co-hosted by *NSYNC and comedian Kathy Griffin, kicked off with an *NSYNC performance of "Just Got Paid" which saw the boy band decked out in colorful pimp daddy suits followed by an opening monologue by Griffin which took a nasty shot at Britney Spears. Griffin, who was rolled out onto the stage in a block of ice, told the crowd she thought she was going to have to drill her way out of the ice with her nipples. "You know what I'm talking about Britney!" she said. Damn. Spears could only manage a forced smile after that one.
Other highlights included: A 3 Doors Down performance of "Kryptonite" in which the Mississippi-based rockers adopted a concert technique usually reserved for boy bands: Glow sticks! The entire crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena was shaking fluorescent green glow sticks like nobody's business (wonder what they think of that back in Southern Mississippi?); a particularly realistic punch thrown by *NSYNC's Chris Kirkpatrick which appeared to land square in the jaw of fellow group member JC Chasez in a make-believe throw down; and the Eagles' Don Henley presenting singer-songwriter Randy Newman the Century Award, Billboard's highest honor, following Mystikal's performance of "Shake It Fast" ("A tough act to follow, that Mystikal," said Newman sarcastically).

Britney Spears Gets *NSYNC Birthday Serenade
(12.04) Source - MTV: If you want to be serenaded by the members of *NSYNC on your birthday, it helps to be connected like, really connected.
Britney Spears celebrated her 19th birthday Saturday night by joining the group onstage at the San Diego Sports Arena. The teen queen first hit the stage incognito, wearing a wig and glasses, during the boy band's performance of Johnny Kemp's '80s dance hit "Just Got Paid," according to a source close to the production.
*NSYNC then asked the crowd to join them in singing "Happy Birthday" to the young pop star, who also attended the group's Friday night show in San Diego but did not take the stage.
The San Diego shows afforded the pop outfit even more reason to celebrate as they marked the end of *NSYNC's fall U.S. tour, which had been rolling along since mid-October. A spokesperson for the venue said the group and its tour crew held a private end-of-tour party after Friday night's show, where the group also serenaded Spears with a rendition of "Happy Birthday."
The shows also marked the latest high-profile joint appearances by Spears and *NSYNC, and specifically pal Justin Timberlake. Spears joined Timberlake at last week's My VH1 Music Awards, and both Spears and *NSYNC are slated to appear at Tuesday's Billboard Music Awards.

*NSYNC Team Up With Sharon Stone
(12.04) Source - MTV Asia: American boy band, *NSYNC, are urging their young fans to be charitable to homeless children - with a little help from Sharon Stone.
The "Bye Bye Bye" singers are inviting their fans to bring unwrapped cuddly toys to their concerts, which will be handed out to poor homeless children, who wouldn't otherwise receive Christmas presents.
The chart-topping boy band have joined forces with charity Planet Hope, founded by "Basic Instinct" actress Sharon Stone and her sister Kelly.
A charity spokeswoman says, "It's a lovely thing for us to do together. And it's good to be able to help kids give to other kids less fortunate than themselves."

*NSYNC Speaks Out About Single-Week Sales-Record Hype
(12.04) Source - Launch: As the second leg of *NSYNC's No Strings Attached tour came to a close over the weekend at the Sports Arena in San Diego, California, the group took time out to speak exclusively to Launch about retaining the record for selling the most albums in a single week. A whopping 2.4 million copies of the group's album No Strings Attached flew off store shelves in its debut week in March. The quintet learned that record was still intact after their Jive Records labelmates, the Backstreet Boys, sold 1.59 million copies of their new album Black & Blue in its first week, which is an astonishing number in its own right.
*NSYNC's Chris Kirkpatrick told Launch via cell phone from the group's tour bus that *NSYNC always considered its 2.4 million sales mark to be more of a fan accomplishment than a group accomplishment. "To us as a group, it was never a big deal," he said. "You know, I think everybody else - other groups and media people - made more of it. They wanted to see some hype and [the Backstreet Boys] wanted to get some hype around their record, so they made a lot of comments in the press and things like that. But to us it was like we never took the record as our own. We said we made the record and our fans broke the record."
The 29-year-old Kirkpatrick, the eldest member of *NSYNC, maintains a healthy attitude about all the media hype surrounding his group's reigning sales record. "You know, we never really want to lay claim to any of that anyways, so if somebody else comes along and breaks the record, then it's their fans that went out and bought the album and broke the record. Of course, that group holds on to saying that it was their record," he added, "but at the same time, to us, our fans have really made us who we are, and that's why the least we can do is give them this record."
Kirkpatrick also told Launch that *NSYNC might not be able to top its own 2.4 million sales record with its next studio release. "It's a really, really high number, and you don't realize how high the number is until all of the hype builds up and somebody else comes out and tries to break it and they can't do it," he said. "You know, I don't think we'll be able to break it again, but to have it for a little while is great - to give it to the fans and let them enjoy it and say, 'Well, I'm the one that went out and bought a record. You know 2.4 [million] of us hold this record - we all did something this week.' And that's the most amazing thing to us."
In addition to performing the opening number, *NSYNC will co-host the 2000 Billboard Music Awards with comedian Kathy Griffin Tuesday night (December 5). The annual awards show is scheduled to air live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas starting at 8 PM ET on Fox.

*NSYNC, Michael Jackson appear at Angel Ball
(12.02) Source - Rolling Stone: President Bill Clinton, Senator-elect Hillary Clinton, Michael Jackson, members of *NSYNC, Marc Anthony and actor Gabriel Byrne were among the slew of luminaries gathered Thursday at the New York Marriott Marquis for the Angel Ball, a benefit held to raise money for cancer research. Sponsored by the G&P Foundation, the Angel Ball honored Queen Noor of Jordan with the Angel of Light Award, Mikhail Gorbachev with the Angel of Peace Award and Sir Paul McCartney with the Angel of Hope Award. McCartney did not attend, and was rumored to be holed up in a London recording studio. A number of the guests took to the stage to offer their insights into cancer research before the crowd of 1,800, members of whom ponied upwards of $1,200 a head for the G&P Foundation to utilize for its leukemia and lymphoma prevention research. Hillary Clinton offered a short speech promising to pledge more money for cancer research when she assumes her Senate seat.
Offstage, the principals had more room to discuss their thoughts on the evening's honors and the need for further cancer research.
"I'm involved. I think everyone wants to fight cancer," Anthony said in the press room before the event. "[Songwriter and G&P Foundation co-founder] Denise Rich is a great friend of mine, she wrote a song, 'Remember Me,' in memory of her daughter [Gabrielle Rich Aouad, who died of leukemia at age 27] and I had the honor of recording it, and I'll be performing it here tonight. I'm here for many reasons, first and foremost to support the cause and to support my friend."
"Aside from the importance for raising money for researching cancer, my very personal reason is my best friend had cervical cancer about a year ago, and she died very quickly, leaving an eight-year-old son behind," Byrne told reporters. "She was an amazing wonderful woman...I was actually in Paris at a dinner three years ago, and three women who were at that table are dead of cancer. When you think about the amount of money they spend on arms, investment and military equipment, I think there will be a time when the money spent on that should be spent on something essential like cancer research."
Byrne was interrupted as a herd of photographers hurdled out of the room like bloodhounds on a hunt as word of a Michael Jackson spotting spread. Jackson's visit to the photo room was nixed by the screaming and flashing of cameras. Though Jackson's visit to the photo room was nixed by the screaming and flashing of cameras, other celebrities such as Lance Bass from *NSYNC, Joan Collins, Jane Seymour and Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall were unaffected by the press frenzy and posed without incident.
