*NSYNC Memorabilia Up For Auction
(11.09) Source - Launch: The members of *NSYNC have autographed several items that have been put up for bid on Internet auction site Ebay by talk show hostess Rosie O'Donnell. Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, and Chris Kirkpatrick signed *NSYNC marionettes which are currently up for grabs.
*NSYNC appeared on the Rosie O'Donnell Show Tuesday (November 7) and played the game "*NSYNCtionary" with O'Donnell. The group members autographed the part of the game that was mounted above the drawing board, and the talk show hostess has placed the entire board with the five pictures *NSYNC drew on it up for bid. In addition, fans can bid on an *NSYNC autographed HBO concert poster.
The auction, which closes November 12, benefits the For All Kids Foundation, which O'Donnell established in 1997 to help support the intellectual, social, and cultural development of at-risk and underserved children across the country.
*NSYNC performs in concert at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, tonight (November 9) and tomorrow (November 10). Fatone tells Launch that the best part about being on tour is seeing how fans react to the group's music and choreography.
"We like to see the immediate reaction of the fans," he says. "When you record an album, we kind of go, 'I bet that people will like this part, and I'll bet that everybody is going to like this part.' Then when you go on tour you realize, 'No, they like this part and that part and the other,' and it's kind of interesting to see what people vibe on and things in real life. Because you kind of have this picture in your head, but it's cool to see how people take the interpretations their own way and then latch on to different things than you might have expected. So, it's fun to watch the crowd's response."
In other *NSYNC news, singer Bass is scouting locations in New York City to open up a nightclub, according to New York magazine. The club is expected to be open for business by summer.

*NSYNCer To Open Club
(11.08) Source - People.com: Lance Bass of *NSYNC is about to put his money where his mouth is. New York magazine reports that the 21-year-old singer - who happens to be a bass - is scouting Manhattan locations with an eye toward opening his own nightclub, which he reportedly plans to have fully operational by next summer. His business partner will be Eytan Sugarman, who already runs some of the city's hot spots, says New York. Sugarman's existing clubs include One51, said to be a popular hangout for the World Champ New York Yankees. As for the venture with Bass, Sugarman told the magazine that he expects it to be a sprawling venue with a capacity for 2,000 people and different music featured in various rooms. It will also be for all of the people, not an exclusive few. "We're not big on that whole velvet-rope thing," he said. Apparently, too, Bass is launching into the club world as a solo, as there has been no word on his being joined in this new foray by bandmates Joshua "JC" Chasez, Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone or Chris Kirkpatrick.

(11.07) Source - Billboard: Details are emerging on the new outlets being assembled by the main producers of Cheiron, the Stockholm-based production and publishing joint venture with the Zomba Group that will close its eight-year-old operation on Dec. 31, just as a three-year contract with Zomba expires.

On the same date, David Kreuger and Per Magnusson will initiate A Side at an undetermined location, while Kristian Lundin and Jakob Schulze will start an unnamed firm at Cheiron's studios in Kungsholmen.

Dornemann, Zelnick Out; Gassner New BMG CEO
(11.06) Source - Billboard: In a management shakeup at BMG Entertainment - which includes the RCA and Arista record labels - chairman Michael Dornemann and president/CEO Strauss Zelnick have resigned and been replaced by returning BMG veteran Rudi Gassner, who will assume the position of president/CEO.
According to sources, Zelnick and Dornemann have clashed with Thomas Middelhoff, chairman/CEO of Bertelsmann AG, over recent moves by the Bertelsmann eCommerce Group. BMG Entertainment management initially opposed the strategic alliance with Napster announced last week, until Middelhoff finally had to crush dissension by telling them to get on board and help make the deal work, sources say. The changes also come in the wake of BMG Entertainment's most successful year in its history.
In addition to the different strategies on how to compete in e-commerce, some sources suggest that Middelhoff was unhappy with management's handling of the dispute that saw chart-topping boy band *NSYNC jump from RCA to Jive and how they bungled the removal of Arista president Clive Davis. The resignations are said to have been triggered when Middelhoff decided to restructure BMG Entertainment, leaving the top two executives with less responsibility.
Details on the restructuring are scarce but sources say that the BMG Direct record club and Germany-based manufacturing facility Sonopress will be taken out of BMG Entertainment and placed elsewhere within Bertelsmann. The record club is apparently going to be placed under the Bertelsmann eCommerce Group, which likely will clear the way for it to be merged with CDNow. The company is also engaged in negotiations to buy Columbia House.
According to a press release, Dornemann will step down from the Bertelsmann executive board effective Dec. 31, and as chairman of BMG Entertainment at the end of the company's fiscal year on June 30, while Zelnick's resignation is effective Dec. 31. But sources say that, as of today, Gassner is calling the shots.
Zelnick joined BMG Entertainment as CEO of North America in January 1995 and was promoted to president and CEO of BMG Entertainment in July 1998. Dornemann, who will retire, helped to create BMG as one of the lead advocates for acquiring RCA in 1987, which was merged with Bertelsmann's music assets.
Gassner, who had unofficially been the No. 2 man at the company for years under Dornemann, left the company in January, 18 months after Zelnick was made his boss. Since then, Gassner has been serving on the board of directors for the German Internet portal Ecapella as well as on the advisory board for edel Music.
Gassner, whose appointment will be announced today (Nov. 6), has a long relationship with the BMG management team. He joined the company in 1987, after 18 years in the PolyGram organization, as president/CEO of BMG International, a position he held until earlier this year.
The re-hiring of Gassner is also seen as important because he would play a pivotal role should Bertelsmann be successful in acquiring EMI Recorded Music. Sources suggest that Bertelsmann is exploring the possibility of making that acquisition, now that the EMI-Time Warner deal has been aborted.

Napster Is Stealing, Say *NSYNC
(11.03) Source - WorldPop!: Boy band *NSYNC have slammed mp3-swapping website Napster, claiming that downloading a song for free is the same as stealing.
Three albums worth of *NSYNC material is now available for free download on Napster, including their new single, This I Promise You. Singer Lance Bass told worldpop he's infuriated by the 'help yourself' attitude to music on the Internet. 'That's our trade and at that point it's stealing. If it was something that we authorised to go out there, then I wouldn't have a problem with it, but nobody asked us,' Bass said. 'It's breaking the law is what it is, because it's copyright infringement.'
Joey Fatone goes one further, likening downloading tracks on Napster to helping yourself to the contents of your favourite store. 'It's just like walking into a clothing store and saying, 'I want a sweater and I want it now,' taking it and walking out,' he claimed.
'Wait a minute. That guy went through all the trouble to call the manufacturer to get the thing, and then the guy had to pay for the sweater.' Fatone continued. 'We had to pay for studio time. There are a million things that have to go on, and at the end of the day when that guy just kind of takes it and walks out with it for free, it's not fair. It's basically stealing.'
However JC Chasez concedes that, as multimillionaires, the guys in *NSYNC are not hurting from a lack of income thanks to Napster's existence. 'It doesn't affect us as much as it does other artists that depend on people going out there and buying their records. That's their job and that's how they live. That's how a lot of artists out there pay the bills.'
Napster is currently battling for survival in the courts against the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), who have claimed that the company infringes music copyright.
*NSYNC's single This I Promise You is officially available in UK stores on November 13th.

Backstreet Talk About "The Record"
(11.03) Source - Wall Of Sound: Expectations are running high for the Backstreet Boys' "Black and Blue," scheduled for a Nov. 21 release, and whether or not it can beat the single-week sales record set by labelmates *NSYNC earlier this year. But Howie Dorough says he and his comrades aren't as concerned as you might think.
"The whole big thing is who's breaking whose record, especially since we had the record ourselves last year," Dorough tells Wall of Sound. "But records are made to be broken, and to us, it's not so much about that. It's just about making good music, and if the fans love it and we're happy with it, everyone else will come along with it."
After selling more than 11 million copies of their last album, Millennium, in the United States alone, the Boys turned once again to Swedish producer Max Martin for the bulk of Black and Blue. "We were both there for each other at the start of our careers," Dorough says of Martin, who has also worked with *NSYNC and Britney Spears. "We're like family with him. He's just a great guy." Also on board this time around are Rodney Jerkins and Babyface, who sat in the booth for "Time."

Politicians around you
Bring tears to your eyes
Their fakeness astounds you
When they hand you a line
They're all the same
They are old dopes
Taking the oath those morons
Before they screw up
Oh, that shouldn't take too long
Yes, Bush and Gore
They both seem swell
Won't get my vote
No way in Hell
They're as useless as dog doo
This I promise you
