*NSYNC News - September 2000

MTV's Message: Girls All Grownup
(9.09) Source - Infobeat: The little girls are all grown up. Britney Spears shed her wholesome teen queen image at the MTV Video Music Awards Thursday night, stripping off a man-style tuxedo to reveal a nude-colored glimmering bikini top and matching pants as she performed a version of "Satisfaction," by the Rolling Stones. Spears, 18, also teamed with fellow teen pop sensation Christina Aguilera, 19, onstage as presenters - and both wore sexy black dresses with thigh-high slits. The red carpet outside Radio City Music Hall was a parade of stars, each trying to be sexier and more daring than the other. Everyone was a candidate for the most-talked about outfit at the awards - a la Jennifer Lopez at this year's Grammy Awards. Lopez toned down her look from that memorable green Versace gown with the plunging neckline and slit-up-to-there skirt, opting for a white midriff baring top and hip-hugger pants made for her by boyfriend Sean (Puff Daddy) Combs' Sean Jean clothing line.
Lil' Kim, however, didn't stray from her typically shocking look. She arrived in a revealing reddish-orange spider-web design that looked more like lingerie. Destiny's Child, winners for the R&B video "Say My Name," also kept up with another trend - leather - as the three women wore similar but not matching studded black leather outfits. Best hip-hop video award winner Sisqo wore a studded red leather outfit during his onstage performance. Black leather was the fashion choice for the majority of *NSYNC, which won three awards. A handful of stars stuck to more traditional award-show fashions, including Toni Braxton in a tuxedo (although she was missing the shirt). Moby and two of the Red Hot Chili Peppers wore monochromatic suits, shirts and ties, sporting the look made popular by Regis Philbin. Big winner Eminem went the opposite route, wearing a series of baggy athletic pants and plain white T-shirts.

Bubbles Burst
(9.08) Source - Entertainment Weekly: Awards let the girly backlash begin. Both Britney Spears and her fellow ex Mouse Club habitue Christina Aguilera were shut out of the MTV Video Music Awards last night, even while Britney bared a little more skin than usual in a racy performance at the show. Instead, Eminem and 'N Sync took home three prizes each, the most awards for any artist. The Slim Shady snagged the Best Male Video and Best Video honors for his trademark hit, ''The Real Slim Shady,'' and shared Best Rap Video for Dr. Dre's ''Forgot About Dre,'' while 'N Sync scored the Best Pop Video, Best Choreography, and Viewer's Choice awards. Anti-bombshell Macy Gray was crowned Best New Artist in a Video for her hit ''I Try.'' Jennifer Lopez -- who donned hip huggers instead of a green Versace sheath for this ceremony -- took home the award for Best Dance Video, and Aaliyah was given the Moonman for Best Female Video.

*NSYNC, Eminem Top MTV Awards
(9.08) Source - Rolling Stone: Eminem, who performed "The Real Slim Shady" amidst dozens of Slim Shady lookalikes, took home Video of the Year, and *NSYNC grabbed the Viewers Choice Award for "Bye Bye Bye" to lead MTV's Video Music Awards. Other winners last night at New York's Radio City Music Hall included Limp Bizkit (Best Rock Video for "Break Stuff"), Sisqo (Best Hip-Hop Video for "Thong Song"), Blink-182 (Best Group Video for "All the Small Things") and Destiny's Child (Best R&B Video for "Say My Name").

MTV Awards: Eminem Wins Best Video
(9.08) Source - Infobeat: Foul-mouthed rapper Eminem performed "The Real Slim Shady" while walking into Radio City Music Hall with an army of lookalikes Thursday, then walked out with the top honors on the MTV Video Music Awards. Along the way, pop music's annual wild party lived up to its reputation with a high altitude stagecrasher, profane jokes that tested the censor's trigger finger and a winner who admitted she hated making videos. Eminem's signature song was named video of the year and best male video. He rapped it while walking in off Sixth Avenue, where earlier in the evening a gay rights group protested his violent lyrics. "I'm going to take this home and put it right between my Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera posters," he said while toting his trophy, mentioning the two teen singers he has ridiculed in song.
Another Eminem nemesis, the pop band *NSYNC, took home three trophies, including best pop video and viewer's choice for their marionette clip, "Bye Bye Bye." Slinky soul star Aaliyah, rock veterans Red Hot Chili Peppers, Macy Gray and Bjork each won two awards. Eminem shared a third award with mentor Dr. Dre. While Limp Bizkit accepted the award for best rock video, a long-haired gatecrasher appeared sitting atop a stage prop about 10 feet above them. The audience chanted "jump, jump" as security guards tried to get him down. He was later identified as Timmy Commerford, bass player for the rock band, Rage Against The Machine. One of the best jokes was unspoken: Napster founder Shawn Fanning appearing on stage in a Metallica T-shirt. "Nice shirt," MTV's Carson Daly said. Metallica's Lars Ulrich, sitting in the audience, feigned sleep.

MTV Awards Security Was Tight
(9.08) Source - Infobeat: While a gathering of world leaders kept authorities on alert on Manhattan's East Side, a gathering of rock stars in midtown created a whole new set of security jitters.
Police officers and rock's private armies of bodyguards were out in force to keep the peace at MTV's Video Music Awards Thursday night as the second day of the United Nations Millennium Summit wound down.
Outside Radio City Music Hall, hundreds of New York Police Department officers kept watch over fans standing six-deep on the sidewalks. Top-selling acts such as Britney Spears, boy band *NSYNC and foul-mouthed rapper Eminem relied on their own keepers for protection.
By the end of the night, at least five men in the crowd had been arrested, charged with sexually abusing women. Two men and three teen-age boys were charged in separate incidents with sexually abusing six women. Police said that in all of the cases, the suspects rubbed up against the women.

That's 'Amor'
(9.07) Source - Entertainment Weekly: Teen popsters *NSYNC, who'll perform on tonight's MTV Video Music Awards, scored their first No. 1 single this summer with the ubiquitous ditty "It's Gonna Be Me." Not content to rest, the boy band - who tie their taunting nemesis Eminem for six video award nominations - are busy making big plans for their next single, "This I Promise You." To maximize the ballad's hit potential, Justin, JC, and the gang have recorded two vastly different versions of the song, which is penned and produced by that big hair '80s crooner Richard Marx.
First up is a Spanish lyric version ("Yo te Voy a Amor"), which the oft gyrating gringos will premiere during their performance on the Latin Grammy Awards (airing live Sept. 13, 8 p.m., CBS). The guys recorded "Yo," which hits Spanish language radio next week, with the help of a dialogue coach. "It was something that we had even discussed doing with other singles in the past," says Joe Riccitelli, senior VP of pop promotion at *NSYNC's label, Jive, "because there's such a big audience for Spanish speaking radio." Indeed, Riccitelli estimates that *NSYNC will reach an additional 10 to 17 million listeners with this Spanish 101 cut.
But don't worry: The guys aren't abandoning their Top 40 roots. Because pop radio is increasingly shying away from playing ballads - (of the top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart, only one, Joe's "I Wanna Know," is a ballad) - the group tapped hot dance club remixer Hex Hector (Madonna, Jennifer Lopez) to do an up tempo version of the song. But there was a problem. The original version was so slow, Hector told them that they'd have to rerecord their vocals to make a faster mix work. If he simply sped up the original vocals to go with the kicky new club beat, the guys would've sounded like the Chipmunks.
So after their June 20 show in Denver, *NSYNC flew in the New York City based remixer for a daylong recording session. "I was surprised when they said they'd do it," explains Hector, who's currently tweaking Ricky Martin's forthcoming single "She Bangs." "Because they're such a big act and they were on tour, I didn't think they'd want to come in to re-sing vocals on their day off."
Still, as Hector describes the session, it wasn't exactly all work and no play. They'd "screw around" between takes, he says, by making up explicit lyrics to go with staple show tunes. "It would tarnish their wholesome schoolboy image if I told you what was sung," Hector says of the impromptu lascivious lullabies of Broadway. Hey, with a matching video, just think of all the airtime they'd get on the Playboy channel.

Britney, Eminem, *NSYNC Get Wild, Weird For VMA Sets
(9.07) Source - MTV: For the second hour of the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, Britney Spears, Eminem, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and *NSYNC rolled out performances that ranged from surprisingly sedate to downright bizarre.
Borrowing a page from "Flashdance" - as well as Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" video - a suit-and-tied Spears looked as if she had chosen to take a low-key approach for her second straight VMA performance.
After emerging from behind a backlit screen, Spears descended down a spiral staircase and offered up a soulful, if unstirring, rendition of the Rolling Stones' anti-establishment classic, "Satisfaction." But just when it appeared that Britney would be playing it tame, it all came off - well, almost.
Spears sent the crowd's hormones into a frenzy by tearing off her black suit to reveal a spangled, flesh-toned outfit, and then proceeded to kick into an adrenaline-pumping performance of "Oops!... I Did It Again" that seemed to suggest that perhaps she really was "not that innocent" anymore.
The beauty was then followed by the beast, as rap bad boy Eminem literally took it to the streets for a performance of "The Real Slim Shady." Starting outside the venue, Em began the number by barking the lyrics in front of a group of look-alikes lined up as if they were a batch of new military recruits arriving for boot camp.
Perhaps the evening's most bizarre performance was turned in by the guys of *NSYNC, who admirably (if questionably) attempted to cram mini-versions of three songs, "This I Promise You," "Bye Bye Bye," and "It's Gonna Be Me" into their 4 minute and 15 second set.
Wearing white shirts and sitting on stools that rose out of the floor of the Radio City Music Hall stage, *NSYNC sang a few bars from its "This I Promise You" ballad. The guys then ripped off their tops to reveal black undershirts and stepped behind TV monitors lowered in front of their heads in a routine that looked like it was lifted from a Grace Jones video or Laurie Anderson performance art piece.
As the monitors displayed images of the respective band member's heads "singing" "Bye Bye Bye," *NSYNC continued to dance behind the screens, occasionally emerging from behind them as if they were playing peekaboo with the audience.
Things returned to normal during the boy band's incredibly brief finale - a sped-up rendition of "It's Gonna Be Me" - during which the band and its cadre of supporting dancers jokingly took a break from its fast and furious performance in order for Joey Fatone to catch his breath.

Eminem, *NSYNC Tie At Top Of VMA Heap
(9.07) Source - MTV: The much heralded showdown between outspoken rapper Eminem and popsters *NSYNC (who he's been known to speak out about quite frequently) came down to a draw Thursday night, as both acts turned their six nominations into three awards at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
Boy band champs *NSYNC tied Em at the front of the pack by collecting three Moonmen as well. The group's "Bye Bye Bye" took home honors for Best Pop Video and Best Choreography In A Video as well as the Viewer's Choice award (the only honor of the night voted on by fans).
The show also scored water cooler points by pairing Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst with teen queen Christina Aguilera for a performance that saw Aguilera stomping around the stage while Durst rocked the mic.
Behind Em and *NSYNC in the hunt for VMA gold (well, technically silver) were a knot of artists tied with two wins apiece, as MTV spread the love around a tightly packed field. Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aaliyah, Macy Gray, and Bjork all walked away from Radio City with two awards.
Of greater note may be those who did not walk off with trophies. While she may have been the unofficial winner of the Jennifer Lopez Award for sauciest outfit, Aguilera was unable to turn any of her five VMA nominations into a win. Her teen pop counterpart Britney Spears also went home empty-handed, despite heading into the night with four nominations.
Considering the depth of the "TRL" field, it proved to be a rough night for teen pop as *NSYNC proved to be the sole representatives of the genre in the winners' circle.
Kid Rock even managed to upstage his co-presenter, the famously chatty WWF star The Rock, during his time at the podium, quipping, "No offense to the Backstreet Boys, but the commercial that *NSYNC did for McDonald's was way cooler than the one that the Backstreet Boys did for Burger King."

*NSYNC, Aguilera, More Talk VMA Competition
(9.06) Source - MTV: With the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony right around the corner, the pressure is on for the star-studded nominees who are busily weighing their chances of taking home a coveted Moonman.
Some artists are content just to be recognized. Take return nominee Jennifer Lopez (whose "Waiting For Tonight" is up for two 2000 VMAs), for example. "Being nominated for awards last year and this year is amazing to me," she explained.
Other artists, such as *NSYNC, are a bit more cutthroat when it comes to VMA night. Apparently, despite having zillions of fans and record-breaking sales, nothing can quite fill the empty space in the group's trophy cabinet the way a VMA could.
"We haven't got a Moonman yet," the group's Justin Timberlake said longingly.
"There is a chance," fellow *NSYNCer Joey Fatone noted, no doubt recognizing the group's six nominations, which put the popsters at the head of this year's VMA pack alongside Eminem.
Considering the group's dominating year both on the charts and on MTV, leave it to *NSYNC's Chris Kirkpatrick to overstate the obvious: "This year, if we lose, it's really gonna suck."
Sharing *NSYNC's passion for taking home one of the little silver fellas is Aguilera who is nominated for a whopping five awards, including the Best Female Video, as well as Best Pop Video, Best New Artist In A Video, Best Choreography In A Video, and the coveted Viewer's Choice award for "What A Girl Wants."
The latter honor concerns Christina the most, it seems, as she's up against fellow former Mouseketeers Spears and (two-fifths of) *NSYNC, not to mention R&B upstart Sisqo and her sometime nemesis Eminem.
"The Viewer's Choice kinda scares me," Aguilera said, "because it's just so up in the air, you know? It's just up to the viewers."

2gether Outpaces *NSYNC On Singles Chart
(9.06) Source - MTV: Truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
2gether, the fictitious boy band concocted for an MTV original TV-movie of the same name, has outsold *NSYNC on the singles chart for two weeks running.
The group's "The Hardest Part Of Breaking Up (Is Getting Back Your Stuff)" has outpaced *NSYNC's "It's Gonna Be Me" by about 10,000 units over the past two weeks; on this week's SoundScan singles sales chart, 2gether comes in five slots ahead of *NSYNC at number 14.
As further evidence that the group is turning into what it was intended to spoof, 2gether's second album, "2gether Again," sold more than 42,000 copies in its first week, landing the CD at number 26 on next week's "Billboard" album chart (see "Nelly Stays On Top As 'Backstage,' 2gether Hit Chart").
The five members of 2gether - Evan Farmer ("Jerry O'Keefe"), Michael Cuccione ("Jason 'Q.T.' McKnight"), Alex Solowitz ("Mickey Parke"), Noah Bastian ("Chad Linus"), and Kevin Farley ("Doug Linus") - were tapped to star in director Nigel Dick's "Spinal Tap"-like spoof of boy band mania. Now, the group has gone on to spawn two albums, a weekly TV series, and even a stint on Britney Spears' recent tour.

'Hollywood Squares' Lines Up Pop Acts
(9.06) Source - Infobeat: Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath appears all this week on the pop act version of Hollywood Squares along with 98 Degrees, Jessica Simpson, Vitamin C, Hoku and *NSYNC's Chris Kirkpatrick. The shows were taped earlier this summer with celebrity winnings benefiting SHINE - an educational arts and technology nonprofit organization. Sugar Ray appears on the "Loud Rocks" rock-rap compilation with hip-hop outfit the Alkaholiks. The collection was released Tuesday. Meanwhile, Sugar Ray is spending time in a Los Angeles studio working on the follow-up to its 1999 release, "14:59."

*NSYNC Headed For The 10 Million Mark Again
(9.06) Source - SonicNet: This boy band is poised to win their second RIAA Diamond Award this year as third LP is certified nine-times platinum.
*NSYNC have shipped 9 million copies of their third album, No Strings Attached, since its release five months ago, according to the Recording Industry Association of America.
The RIAA designated the album nine-times platinum in its August certifications, which also saw fellow pop stars Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears achieve multiplatinum gains. Aguilera's 1999 self-titled debut reached the 7 million mark, while Spears' second album, this year's Oops I Did It Again, was certified at 6 million.
If *NSYNC's No Strings Attached carries on its sales success, the red-hot LP could give the boy band its second Diamond Award, commemorating sales of 10 million, this year. The quintet's first album, *NSYNC, hit that mark in January.
*NSYNC also have a holiday LP, Home for Christmas, that is certified double platinum. Additionally, the second single from No Strings Attached, "It's Gonna Be Me", was certified gold last month.
The RIAA's certifications recognize the number of records that have been shipped to retail outlets. No Strings Attached has sold 7.7 million units to date, while *NSYNC has sold 8.2 million, according to SoundScan. Those figures do not include sales for the past week, which will be released on Wednesday.

Pop Artists Reap Success
(9.05) Source - Billboard: Pop has been making the music world go round this summer and fans have been flocking to concerts and buying albums. Releases by *NSYNC, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears earned multiplatinum awards last month, according to the Recording Industry Association of America's Gold and Platinum certifications for August. *NSYNC's "No Strings Attached" went above the 9 million mark only five months after its release. Aguilera's self-titled debut, released last year, came in at 7 million, while fellow former Mouseketeer Spears' sophomore release "Oops!...I Did It Again" reached the 6 million mark within three months of release. "The multiplatinum success of artists like Britney, Christina and *NSYNC are a testament to their loyal fans," RIAA president and CEO Hilary Rosen said. "They've had a tremendous year both at the box office and at retail and we still have four months to go."

Latin Grammy's Tap *NSYNC
(9.05) Source - Rolling Stone: *NSYNC have been added to the list of performers scheduled for the Sept. 13 Latin Grammy Awards at Los Angeles' Staples Center. The boy band will perform two songs with the salsa group Son By Four, including a bilingual version of *NSYNC's "This I Promise You."

Brandy Not To Compete With *NSYNC
(9.02) Source - Billboard: 21-year-old Brandy, who released her first single when she was just 11, admits, with what appears to be a trace of reluctance, that her sitcom is her focus right now. She's not writing, she's not in the studio, and she says she probably won't start working on a new album for at least another year. This seems like an awfully bitter pill to swallow in light of the fact that her second album, 1998's "Never Say Never," sold more than 3 million copies. But that's not how she sees it. "I want it to be right; I just don't want to put anything out because of time. I just really want to focus and put out some good music and have a message to it, so people can get something out of it." Brandy's eyes get even bigger when she's talking about her singing: "I think about [my music] everyday like what kind of sound I want to come out with. I don't really listen to what's going on in the music industry right now, but I know it's a lot of upbeat stuff, and I like *NSYNC, so I listen to their stuff sometimes." In an industry that thrives on flavors of the month and one-hit wonders, how does Brandy think her brand of R&B will survive in this new age of dancing boy bands and girl singers? "By not competing," she says. "I know that this *NSYNC stuff is the happening stuff, the Britney Spears and all that, right? A lot of their music sounds R&B, you know, and I want to set myself apart. That's what I did on my second album. I just listened to what was going on, and I came out with a different type of sound, and it worked."

Blaque Brings It On
(9.02) Source - Infobeat: Blaque members Brandi Williams, Natina Reed, and Shamari Fears make their feature film debut in the cheerleading comedy Bring It On, which surprised many in the industry by grossing $17.3 million and taking the Number One spot at the box office in its debut weekend. Two versions of Blaque's hit single "As If" appear on the Bring It On soundtrack, one of which features a guest vocal by *NSYNC's Joey Fatone.

*NSYNC Hits Nine-Million Mark
(9.02) Source - Rolling Stone: The back to school season finds the hottest teen pop acts, *NSYNC, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, reaching new multi-platinum heights according to the Recording Industry Association of America's August certifications. Undoubtedly boosted by sold-out summer tours, teen pop continues to rule the roost.
"No Strings Attached" reached the nine-million mark and gave the group its second gold single from the album for "It's Gonna Be Me." Only five months after its release, the album is poised to outdo its predecessor, *NSYNC, which stands at ten million, potentially giving the band its second Diamond (sales of ten million) album in one year (*NSYNC was certified Diamond in January).
Britney Spears' second album "Oops!...I Did It Again" climbed to the six-million mark just three months after its release. Meanwhile Christina Aguilera's self-titled debut reached the seven-million mark almost a year to the day after its release last August.

*NSYNC Joins Aguilera, Lopez For Latin Grammys
(9.01) Source - MTV: Orlando hitmakers *NSYNC and Latin pop group Son by Four will join Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez, and Gloria Estefan as performers at the first Latin Grammy Awards, scheduled for September 13 in Los Angeles.
In addition to singing at the inaugural event, Lopez and Estefan will also co-host the show, airing in some 120 countries across the globe, with actors Andy Garcia and Jimmy Smits.
For the Latin Grammys, *NSYNC and Son By Four will perform a bilingual duet of the *NSYNC track "This I Promise You" (or "Yo Te Voy A Amar" in Spanish) from its "No Strings Attached" album. Son By Four will then take the lead for an all-star rendition of "A Puro Dolor," the Puerto Rico group's single that topped the "Billboard" Latin charts over the summer. CBS will broadcast the Latin Grammy Awards live from L.A.'s Staples Center from 9 PM to 11 PM (ET).
Following the Latin Grammy performance, *NSYNC will take a few weeks off before gearing up for the start of its fall tour. During that off-time, *NSYNC will continue to mull over its upcoming non-performance-based film project, which Chris Kirkpatrick said will likely focus on the individual members of the band rather than the group as a whole.
"I think [the film will] be something we probably do individually," Kirkpatrick told MTV Radio. "Everybody will probably do their own thing to just get the feel for it, and then [we'll] see what happens. I don't think we want to do an '*NSYNCworld'-type movie right now.
"The type of movie we want to do is something that expands our abilities and expands our craft," he added. "Anything we do right now, even if it's a great movie, is gonna be judged along with a 'Spiceworld' [movie] or something else that was a little overrated."
*NSYNC plans to kick off the fall leg of its tour on October 17 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Spin Mags 100 Sleaziest Moments

The article's list contains a relation to hot boy band *NSYNC who claims the #48 spot. Sleaziest Moment #48: "Lou Pearlman stealing money away from popular band *NSYNC, and then actually suing them millions for it" Now that's the truth!
