Teen Girls Find A Place To Belong: The Web
(8.09) Source - Rolling Stone Daily: Teen girls are the fastest-growing group on the Web, increasing their numbers at least five times as quickly as the rest of the Internet and helping to drive women's increasing majority online. Teen girls now account for 5.8 percent of all Internet traffic--up from 3.1 percent a year ago. And their interests online seem to mirror their interests offline: Teen girls make up large percentages of the visitors to sites devoted to shopping, teen magazines and music.
Jane Goldshteyn, 15, of Lincolnwood particularly loves the Web site devoted to popular boy band 'N Sync. "They're, like, my favorite band," said Jane, who estimated that she spends four or five hours online a day. She checks e-mail, chats with friends and sometimes just surfs for cool sites.
The skyrocketing numbers of teen girls online also have helped to nudge females further into the Internet majority. In May, females made up 50.4 percent of Internet traffic. That's a slight increase over earlier this year, when females older than 2 made up half of online users for the first time. Those numbers have risen steadily since 1996, when females made up only 38 percent of Internet users. "Women in general are no longer a niche market," Rickert said. And marketers, Rickert predicted, will "take note of the fact that teenage girls are a growing presence on the Web."
Popular sites (Web sites with the highest percentages of visitors who are 12-to-17-year-old girls):
Cosmogirl.com - 50.7%

Staged by Brazilian businessman Roberto Medina, "Rock In Rio" follows the 1991 event, which featured performances from Guns 'N Roses, Santana, and George Michael. Proceeds from the 2001 festival will benefit Viva Rio, a Rio-based social services organization that aids the youth of the city. *NSYNC Sweep At Teen Choice Awards
(8.08) Source - MTV: *NSYNC staked a claim to tops in teen pop, taking home five Teen Choice Awards at a ceremony Sunday in Santa Monica, California. The event, which honors winners selected through online voting, will be broadcast August 22 on Fox. *NSYNC, which shattered sales records this spring with the release of "No Strings Attached," won awards for Choice Single with "Bye Bye Bye"; Song Of The Summer and Choice Music Video for "It's Gonna Be Me"; Choice Pop Group; and group member Justin Timberlake won the Male Hottie Of The Year award. The Backstreet Boys took home one award, Choice Album, for last year's "Millennium," which is the second-fastest-selling LP behind "No Strings Attached." Teen singer Britney Spears won the Choice Female Artist award, as well as the honors for Female Hottie Of The Year.

JC And Guest Set For Some Brief Relaxation
(8.07) Source - Allstar: Fresh from Fox's Teen Choice Awards and ready to celebrate victory with food, *NSYNC's JC Chasez was spotted Sunday evening at the trendy Hollywood Thai restaurant, Toi. Accompanied by a cute brunette in oversized Levi's, Chasez, in a white button-down shirt with a long-stem red rose on one side, was content to eat at the bar and enjoy Toi's relaxed rock and roll atmosphere. The cozy -- not to mention unfashionable -- couple did not linger at the restaurant long, but seemed relieved to escape the screaming fans for a short time.

Celebrity Haunts
(8.07) Source - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: You can't accuse Pittsburgh of being overrun by paparazzi. Word is just hitting the streets now on what *NSYNC and certain members of Ozz-fest were doing in town recently while not performing at Three Rivers Stadium and the Post-Gazette Pavilion, respectively. Tommy Lee, former Motley Crue drummer now masterminding Methods of Mayhem, and the boy wonders mingled upstairs in the private club at Metropol on July 15. And, oops, *NSYNC was sporting a special guest -- one named Britney. Before you say LCB infraction, do know that Justin Timberlake and close friend Britney Spears, major stars but minor people, were chaperoned and bodyguarded and limited, like their music, to pop. The young stars stayed for almost three hours and actually mixed it up on the dance floor with the Metropol crowd, according to Metropol marketing director Renee Sroka. The tattooed Lee came in closer to last call and chatted with generation next, so don't be shocked if he turns up on a future teen-pop record. Talk about a motley crue.

*NSYNC, Spears Push Burgers At McDonald's
(8.07) Source - Detroit Free Press: While the lighthearted pop bliss of superstar chart-toppers Britney Spears and *NSYNC is often dismissed as "bubblegum," it has never been associated with cheeseburgers. Until now. A McDonald's promotion that features the teen idols began Friday and is already attracting a lot of attention from customers.
"We haven't had a promotion like this any time before," says William Derr, owner of the Rochester Hills McDonald's on Walton. "The kids just love it. I'm a little bit flabbergasted at how well it's doing."
Through Aug. 24th, McDonald's is offering a split Britney Spears/*NSYNC CD and video. The CD and the video carry a price tag of $4.99 each. The CD is titled Your #1 Requests ... And More! and features remixes of their biggest hits - Spears' "Oops! ... I Did It Again" and *NSYNC's "Bye Bye Bye" - and exclusive new tracks. There are eight tracks in all, four from Spears and four from *NSYNC.
The video, Your #1 Video Requests ... And More!, features backstage footage and hit videos from both artists, as well as Spears' video "Born to Make You Happy," from her Baby ... One More Time album, previously unavailable in the United States. The video runs 35 minutes.
The promotion is a contest, too; some videos and CDs contain a special message, with the prize being the chance to meet Spears and *NSYNC. Several other McDonald's also reported a quick response to the Spears/*NSYNC offering.
Rickie Pinkins, manager at the Detroit McDonald's on Mack, says the response has been overwhelmingly positive: "It's going great; it's been a very good response. It's selling hotter than all the other promotions." The magic question: Is it even hotter than McDonald's lauded Beanie Baby promotions? "Yes," says Pinkins.

Blaque Teams With *NSYNC's Fatone For Next Single
(8.07) Source - MTV: The ladies in Blaque have a new single and a movie cameo on the way, but they're already setting their sights on the follow-up to their platinum debut album. "It'll definitely be a step up from the first album," group member Brandi Williams said. "We're going to have a track from Babyface and one from Diane Warren." In the meantime, the group - Williams, 17, Shamari Fears, 19, and Natina Reed, 18 - will appear on the silver screen in "Bring It On," a cheerleading movie starring Kirsten Dunst, coming out August 25th. Their next single, "As Is," leads the movie's soundtrack and is a collaboration with *NSYNC's Joey Fatone. The single also will come out this month, but its release date hasn't yet been settled on. It won't mark the first time the Detroit teen trio has gotten superstar help. TLC's Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes signed Blaque to her Left Eye Productions, and its first single was the R. Kelly-penned and produced "808," which went top 10 on the pop and R&B charts. The group also made made its biggest splash with "Bring It All To Me," a sort of anti-"No Scrubs" testament to love being more important than wealth, which featured all five members of *NSYNC. "Those guys are like our big brothers," Williams said. "They haven't been in the business a whole lot longer than us, but they've taught us a lot." So has Kelly, she added. "He really taught us that we need to always remember that this is a business," she said. "There's time for games and time for work, and when you're with him, you'd better work." The group just finished 13 dates on the Nickelodeon "All That" Music & More festival tour, which also featured A*Teens, B*Witched, and LFO. "It was great to look out in the audience and see so many little kids," Williams said. "Usually, concerts aren't for kids, so it was really a great thing. "We try to put out music and an image that girls, and guys, can relate to and maybe even be inspired by," she added. "We don't want to be just a girl group." To that end, Williams is adamant that, despite the superstar help, Blaque has its own musical vision. Reed had a hand in writing six songs on the group's self-titled debut, including the Motown-sounding "I Do" and the pensive "Mind Of A King."

*NSYNC Faced With Yet Another Lawsuit
(8.06) Source - MTV News: *NSYNC, SFX Ent & MCY.com are all faced with a class-action lawsuit from a Chicago-area family. Due to a 7 mile traffic jam on southbound I-53, a mother and her daughter were unable to attend the *NSYNC concert in Joliet. The concert (which was originally scheduled for a traffic-free Sunday night) was postponed to August 1 due to an F2 tornado, which ripped apart the stage and mixing tower. This lawsuit claims that *NSYNC and its promoters "over-sold the concert" and ultimately put their fans in danger. Many anxious girls got out of their cars and walked miles in the dark along muddy roads to get to the venue. But many only got there in time to see the last song. There is no word yet from *NSYNC.

*NSYNC's Timberlake Attacked
(8.06) Source - MTV: While in Hawaii recently for a show, *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake was attacked by a mass of out-of-control fans. While the guys are usually surrounded, or at least accompanied by their intimidating group of security guards, Timberlake was left alone, unguarded, to purchase some items when he became the object of attention. The heartthrob was surrounded by a group of at least 50 fans who proceeded to pull his hair, grab him, rip his clothes, and even cut off some of those famous curly locks of his with pairs of scissors. The pop star wasn't seriously hurt, but his faith in his fans has to be shaken after an incident like that.

*NSYNC, 98 Degrees To Heat Up Summer Music Mania 2000
(8.05) Source - Launch: *NSYNC, 98 Degrees, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, Destiny's Child, Pink, Vitamin C, the A*Teens , Don Philip, Boyz N Girlz United, PYT, and more will perform at Summer Music Mania 2000 at the Jacksonville Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida, on August 13th. Tickets for the concert, which is billed as "The Biggest Concert In The World," went on sale today (August 4th) at the Jacksonville Coliseum and through Ticketmaster. The concert will air on Fox TV later this year. In other pop news, the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC are the focus of a popular 3-D laser light show at the Museum Of Science And History's Alexander Brest Planetarium in Jacksonville, Florida. The hour-long show features a color laser system, which projects images that correspond with each song on the ceiling of the 60-foot dome. For example, when *NSYNC's "Tearin' Up My Heart" plays, viewers see a visual of a heart shape tearing in half. The music of both *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys blasts on an 18,000-watt, state-of-the-art digital sound system during the show. The laser show takes place seven days a week at 4 PM ET and will run until September 4th. For more information, call the Alexander Brest Planetarium at (904) 396-7062.

98 Degrees Just Squeeze Bye
(8.05) Source - LiveDaily: Another season, another teen-pop milestone. As 98 Degrees' Revelation awaits its September 26th release date, the group has already dropped "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)" on their apparently very suspecting fans. The single became the most added single last week on mainstream radio, breaking Britney Spears' not-so-venerable three-and-a-half-month record for "Oops!...I Did It Again." Spears set the mark on April 17th when the title track from her then-unreleased album was added to 155 radio stations, topping *NSYNC's previous mark - for "Bye Bye Bye" - by one station. Her album went on to debut with 1.2 million copies sold in its first week, formerly a record for a solo artist, though less than half of *NSYNC's debut week tally. But 98 Degrees more than squeaked by Ms. Spears. The Ohio quartet found their new single added to 170, out of 172, stations that report to trade publication Radio and Records.

Gig Sends *NSYNC, Spears To Rio
(8.04) Source - EW Daily: Britney Spears and *NSYNC have more on their plates than their McDonald's promotions. They are among the 98 artists that have signed on to perform at the Rock in Rio for a Better World festival Jan. 12-21, 2001. The festival, which hosts a myriad of international artists, will accommodate some 1.5 million spectators.

What You Didn't See During *NSYNC's HBO Special
(8.04) Source - EW Daily: *NSYNC's HBO concert special offered a winning mix of sweet teen boy singing (the tuneful tag team of Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez), randy dance moves (humpy crotch thrusts and "back that ass up" bunny hops), and the booming electrothump of the group's new tunes, which were well suited for supersizing to arena proportions. Here's a look at the show's high and low points, along with some things you didn't see at home.
-What You Didn't See I: The crowd booing just minutes before airtime after an announcer told them not to wave banners during the show. (Sample Banner: "JC is my 'Space Cowboy'")
-What You Didn't See II: The message "Flashlights Now!" that came across the jumbo screen before HBO panned to the illuminated crowd
-Best Tune: That jaunty R&B ditty "It Makes Me Ill." (Although we could've done without the too obvious hospital setup.)
-Worst Tune: That spiritually arrogant treacle "(God Must Have Spent) A Little More Time on You." (You wish.)
-Most Charismatic Member Who's Not JC or Justin: Joey Fatone, who ably commanded a brief solo on "I Thought She Knew"
-Least Charismatic Member Who's Not Chris Kirkpatrick: There is no less charismatic member than Chris Kirkpatrick. (See "I Drive Myself Crazy.")
-Shiniest Props: Justin's sequined doo-rags
-Scariest Prop: The massive John Wayne Gacy looking clown face that issued a warning to competing boy bands: "Everybody can have their moment in the spotlight... [but] we're here to stay." (If it comes from the clown, it must be true.)
-Mob Scene You Did See: The gaggle of gals who won the chance to dance on stage. (They should've won some choreography lessons, too.)
-Mob Scene You Didn't See: The anxious parents massed outside the venue
-Riskiest Move That Worked: Justin's surprisingly competent human beat box
-Riskiest Move That Didn't Work: JC's shiny red butt-hugging pants. (Besides, Carmen Electra needs them back.)
-Most Contrived Moment: The "TRL" spoof where the audience gets to choose which song the guys perform next. The choices? Three nursery rhymes and "Tearin' Up My Heart."
-Most Honest Moment: Their unironic cover of Johnny Kemp's "Just Got Paid"

Promoters May Give Chicago Fans Refunds
(8.04) Source - LiveDaily: Many fans missed *NSYNC's Chicago-area show on Tuesday (8/1) due to rush hour traffic, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The show had originally been scheduled for a Sunday, a day with less traffic, but that show was cancelled when wind collapsed a stage that was in the process of being built. Promoters may decide to give out refunds to the fans who missed Tuesday's show.

*NSYNC, Britney To Rock Rio
(8.04) Source - MTV: *NSYNC and Britney Spears are heading south, far south, to headline Brazil's third annual Rock In Rio For A Better World. Spears and the teen pop firm of Fatone, Timberlake, Bass, Chasez, and Kirkpatrick will jet to Rio De Janeiro early next year for the week-long music festival, which kicks off on January 12, 2001. Brazilian acts Fernanda Abreu, Pato Fu, and Funk 'N Lata have also been confirmed for Rock In Rio, and a total of 98 bands from around the world are expected to play the festival. This time around, AOL is backing the fete, which has expanded its title from "Rock In Rio" to the more charitable "Rock In Rio For A Better World." Proceeds from the 2001 event will benefit educational projects from Viva Rio, a preeminent social services organization in Rio helping 11,000 young people. A staff of 3,000 workers is being brought on to accommodate the roughly 1.5 million people that organizers are expecting over the seven days of the festival. Concertgoers will find more than 40 hours of music each day spread across three stages. Tickets for the event will go on sale in October, and organizers are hoping to reach close to 1 billion people in 50 countries through various TV licensing deals.

(8.03) Source - Billboard: *NSYNC's "No Strings Attached" (Jive) took home the week's biggest single unit increase honors, up 27,000 units over last week's figures, thanks largely to the group's July 27th live concert on HBO that garnered strong ratings. *NSYNC's album sold more than 152,000 copies, good for fifth place.

(8.03) Source - LiveDaily: Jacksonville, Fla., pop station WAPE-FM announced that *NSYNC, 98 Degrees, Sisqo, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, Destiny's Child, Pink, Vitamin C, the A-Teens, Don Phillip, Boyz N Girlz United and P.Y.T. will be on the bill for the station's Biggest Concert in the World, scheduled to take place on Aug. 13th at Jacksonville Coliseum. Traffic Jam Keeps Fans From Show
(8.03) Source - Chicago Tribune: The teen heartthrob band *NSYNC may be known for its precision dance moves on stage, but fans trying to make it to Tuesday night's concert in Joliet were lumbering through traffic. Hundreds of fans missed the sold-out show at the new Route 66 Raceway because of traffic that snarled roads for nearly five miles.
Brigitte Plesek of Hammond, Ind., drove her two daughters to the concert but ended up sitting on Illinois 53 instead. They finally made it to the show as the band sang its last song, "Bye, Bye, Bye." The Pleseks spent close to $150 for the tickets. "We sat on that road for four hours. Kids were getting out of their cars and walking everywhere," Plesek said. "There were at least 500 people around us...Kids on bicycles were charging people to give them bike rides."
Raceway officials blamed rush-hour traffic. Drivers had been instructed to take Interstate 80 to Illinois 53, which would have brought them closer to the raceway, said raceway representative Joie Chitwood. The show had been scheduled for a Sunday, when there would have been less traffic, but had to be rescheduled because of bad weather. Chitwood said Joliet police, Illinois state troopers and Will County sheriff's police were directing traffic. "Having it on a Sunday would have been a big difference...There are things we need to work on as we move forward," Chitwood said, noting it was the third concert at the raceway.
Deputy Chief Bill Fitzpatrick of the Joliet Police Department said poor directions also caused a problem, with radio stations directing people to Illinois 53. "We had no place to put the vehicles," Fitzpatrick said. "Everyone came down one road." Bill Kelley, a spokesman for promoter SFX, declined to comment about the traffic snarl but said the concert was a sellout and that 45,000 people were expected. "The band wants all the kids in the venue when the band starts," Kelley said. The promoters don't know how many fans failed to make the show, nor have they decided whether to give refunds. But raceway officials are asking customers who may have had problems getting to the show to call (815) 722-5500

Justin, Lance And Joey See "Coyote Ugly"
(8.02) Source - Billboard: LeAnn Rimes attended the star-studded premiere of the film, Coyote Ugly at New Yorks famed Ziegfeld Theatre last night (July 31st), followed by a lavish party at nearby Roseland Ballroom. During the night, she turned in a surprise performance of "Cant Fight The Moonlight" behind a mock version of the bar from the movie that was set up in the venue. Tyra Banks, and *NSYNC's Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, and Joey Fatone were among those in attendance.

*NSYNC Dribbles For Charity
(8.01) Source - Rolling Stone: With the help of a few celeb friends who didn't mind demonstrating how poorly they play basketball, *NSYNC raised over $550,000 for charity Saturday at New York's St. John's University for their second annual fundraising game, Challenge for the Children II.
Joining the *NSYNCers on two separate fifteen-person teams, the Daze and the Knights, were Queen Latifah, Pink, and Jordan Knight, among others. Split up by a random drawing, Justin Timberlake and Chris Kirkpatrick played on blue-jerseyed Daze (who won 34-41), while Lance Bass, JC Chasez and Joey Fatone were relegated to the opposing team, the red-shirted Knights, the only team to boast an actual pro player (retired Detroit Piston star Isiah Thomas).
Not surprisingly, most of the players possessed nothing close to Thomas' skills. A number of the celeb hoopsters seemed to have trouble dribbling, particularly the female players (with the exception of Queen Latifah, who sunk one basket). "I can't even play pig. I can't play horse. I can't play anything," said Pink, who performed one song during halftime. "I'm good at fouling, though. It's all about defense today. I'm going to be the worst basketball player with the most heart." The same could be said for Bass, who tied up the ball in the third quarter and was dragged across the floor. Joking that he just woke up shortly before the 7:30 PM game time, Bass blamed his lack of game on lack of sleep (the night before *NSYNC had finish a four-night stint at Madison Square Garden, where they hope to take the game next year). "I'm very, very not warm," Bass said pre-game. "I'm terrible anyway, so that'll give me an excuse."
The funds raised will be divided among five charities, including *NSYNC's Challenge for the Children Foundation, the Justin Timberlake Foundation, Nordoff-Robbins Foundation, Camp Good Days and Special Times, and the Arnold Palmer Hospital in the band's base of Orlando, Fla.
Meanwhile, R&B superstar Usher pulled out of the game since he had passed out in the studio while working on his third album last week. He was hospitalized Thursday, when he was diagnosed with dehydration and exhaustion and told to rest for two weeks.
