Joseph Chatterton,
proprietor of the Hillside Spa in Medford Hillside, died suddenly at his home at 37 Quincy St. at the age of 57, victim of a heart attack.
Mr. Chatterton was a native of England and had lived here only four years, but was well known as the proprietor of the Hillside grocery store.
He leaves his wife here, Mrs. Louise H. (Abbott) Chatterton, a daughter, Mrs. Louise Copeland, and three sons,
Clifford of Medford, Howard of Providence, Rhode Island, and Earl of Bloomfield, New Jersy
The funeral services will be conducted at his late home at 37 Quincy Street on Thursday at 2 pm.,

Children of Joseph and Hannah Chatterton:
Two children were born and died, one died in childbirth and the second
child died in infancy, before Clifford was born. Clifford,
Louise and Howard were born at home at 285 North Main Street, Pawtucket,
Rhode Island Earl was born in a hospital in Dorchester, MA. (2)
"My father was born in England where his father and brothers were machinists
working for Howard & Bullough Machine Co. which made textile machinery.
The company open an American branch called H. & B. American Machine Works
in Pawtucket, Rhode Island at the Mass. line just off No. Main St.,
so the family came over for the men to work there.
At that time New England was the center of the American textile industry.
My father was the youngest of four boys, thirteen years old when he came over,
and was a draftsman at H & B. when I was born. He must have immigrated

Joseph completed high school and took many correspondence courses with
International Correspondence Schools and got himself a good technical education. (2)
When Hannah's mother died her father, Henry Abbott, and her sister,
Susie, moved in with Joseph and Hannah to stay for the rest of their lives.

The April 1910 US Census recorded Joseph Chatterton living at
785 North Main St., Pawtucket, RI. Joseph, draftsman at machine shop,
age 28; wife, H Louise, age 25, was the mother of 3 children with 1 living;
and son, Clifford L age 8 months. Joseph and Louise were married for 5 years. (3)
The September 12, 1918 WW I Registration Card listed Joseph living at
106 Cushing Ave. Dorchester, MA with Hannah Louise, wife. He was a
machine designer at Standard ______ at 65 Shirly St., Roxbury, Massa He was tall, medium build, with grey eyes, and dark hair. (3)
