Border Collies

Taken from Yahoo
History
Why is a border collie called a border collie? The border part of it's name comes from the fact that it was originally bred in the border country of England and Scotland. The word collie means 'useful' in Gaelic. These dogs had been bred by the elite and noble for about 400 years. They are a shepherd's best friend. The increase in demand for herded animal products during the Industrial Revolution led to an increase in border collies. Today border collies are used for sport, herding, and as pets.

Appearance
Border collies all look similar, but they all look different :). The United States Border Collie Club (USBCC) opposes the showing and judging of collies based on appearance. They maintain that there is no 'breed standard' for the border collies. However, Border Collies are generally medium sized dogs ranging from weights of 20 to 60 pounds. Their coats are rough, medium, or smooth. The color of a border collie is white with black, black and tan, or reddish-brown (which is rarer). Border collies live for about 15 years.

Border Collies as Pets
Border Collies are highly intelligent and energetic dogs. This can make them bad pets or good pets, depending on how experienced and skilled you are as a pet owner. If you don't have very much experience with dogs, it is recommended that you do not get a border collie.

Border Collies, as do many dogs, take a lot of care. As always, you must brush their teeth, clip their nails, and of course feed them and give shelter. Border Collies must also be brushed. During summer they need to be brushed extra because it is so hot under the big coat of fur they have. You do not want your dog to overheat. Make sure to never let your home get too warm.
