3. A Little Bit of Breakfast

Normal POV

Leyva woke an hour before dawn, hoping there would be a lot of food for breakfast. She tiptoed around, trying not to wake Ruby, but soon enough a sleepy voice emerged from the bunk above her. 'Stop trying to sneak around, I'm awake.' Ruby's head poked out from above Leyva. There was a crash. Ruby had fallen out of bed and was now on the floor. Leyva chuckled. She was used to Ruby's clumsiness.

Ruby clambered up and headed towards her sea chest. She opened every one, looking for the one that contained most of her clothes.

'Now, where is that pesky sea chest?? The one with the clothes I need!' Her friend shook with silent laughter.

'God, where is it?!'

'I think it's the one you're sitting on.' Ruby stood up and opened the lid. It was the right one. She pulled on some of the Milan clothes that were in the chest.

'I'm still amazed what a little makeup and strange clothes can do to your appearance!'

'Yeah. I just cut my hair and put on a hat, and Lena doesn't know who I am, and she also thinks I'm a guy!' Leyva said, as she pulled on a shirt. 'What do you think'll be for breakfast?'

'I theriouthly don't know. Have you notithed, I have thtarted to talk with a lithp?'

'No,' Leyva answered, her voice dripping with sarcasm. 'Come on. Let's go down and see what there's for food.'

'Where'th your hat?' Ruby called from the other end of the room.

'Hathathat' Leyva spun around on her heel, and walked into the room to look for it. Then she realized that it had been on her head the whole time. 'Oh dear. Let's go wake Lena up!'

They went to her room and banged on the door until a sleepy voice called out: 'Jes' a sec.' Ruby and Leyva ran as fast as they could down the hall way and emerged on board, out of breath and laughing.

Outside it was blinding. The sun was glinting off the sea, sending blue radiance into the air, making it shimmer like diamonds. The air was crisp and there was a wind that threatened to blow Leyva's hat off.

There was no land in sight, they had left the bay late the night before, and it was nice that way, there only being blue, stretching as far as the eye could see in every direction. Leyva was again and again struck by the power and majesty of the sea. Never ending, impossibly deep and mysterious. Mysterious as the wind, or the planets in the sky.

The sea was dotted with whitecaps, and spray was lifted into the air by invisible hands. Leyva breathed a deep gulp of air, not a trace of sleepiness left in her.

Breakfast was simple. Five types of bagels —Leyva had one of each—english muffins, cereal, milk, some leftovers from dinner, and many varieties of ale, wine and juice. As usual, the mess hall was loud, but not as loud as dinner. The food on the table for breakfast and lunch was left out for two hours, so people could come and go as they pleased. Apparently, Lena had decided to go back to bed after her rude awakening by Leyva and Ruby, since she was not with them at breakfast.

Once the morning meal was over, Leyva and Ruby looked around the ship a bit more than they had before. Since nothing sprung up that seemed interesting, they asked Banhr if they could go up into the crows nest. He gave them permission, and they scurried up the rope ladder that led to the top of the main mast. It seemed you could see forever from the top.

'Do you like this trip??'

'Sure. It would be more fun with Lena knowing who we are, though.'

'Yeah. Why did we even do that?'

'Do what??'

'All the makeup must be getting to your head. The disguises of course, you dumb ass!'

'Oh! I don't know. It was your idea. Why did you do it?'

'I don't know. I do know one thing, though. Lena is going to kill us when she finds out.'
