The burden
that Habakkuk the prophet did see.
Violence! Violence! I cry unto thee.
How long, O Yahweh, wilt thou not hear
Save me from violence and terrible fear!
Grievance thou showest me: iniquity base!
Spoiling and violence before my face.
Strife and contention raise up their head.
Law is withdrawn: false judgments are read!
For the wicked doth compass about all the land
And the righteous are wronged by the Judge’s hand.
Wonder and marvel ye surrounding nations!
I Yahweh will shake these very foundations.
For I will work a work in your days
That you’ll not believe; the Chaldeans I’ll raise!
Though it be told you, you’ll not understand
Tho’ they march through the length and the breadth of the land.
Your homes they will take for their own dwelling places.
Their pride and their judgments are bitter and hasty.
Like ravening wolves and swifter than leopards,
Soaring like eagles they’ll haste with their weapons.
A banquet they’ll seek of violence and plunder
Their faces shall sup up the east wind like thunder.
Captives they’ll take in number as sand.
They’ll scoff at thy kings and lay siege to this land.
Scorn and derision upon them they’ll heap;
Thy princes will fall in the dust at their feet.
His great power he claims he deriveth from Bel!
An offence unto Yahweh, the Omnipotent El.
By imputing his strength unto Nebo his god
He exceeds and surpasses; like the wind he is gone!
He laughs at each fortress and heaps earth to take it.
No mercy he shows to the lambs of this nation.
The righteous are caught like a fish in his net.
He exults and rejoices and feasts on their flesh.
Thine eyes are too pure, O Lord, to behold it.
Thou holdest thy tongue and the wicked devour us!
But thou art our Rock who from time everlasting
Compassion hast shown for our weeping and fasting.
Hear us, O Yahweh, Great God of Salvation!
Destroy the destroyer! Preserve this, thy nation.
