Welcome to Iowa City Babe Ruth
Welcome to Iowa City Babe Ruth
Welcome to Iowa City Babe Ruth Baseball!
We hope that you are as excited for the 1999 season to begin as we are. Practices will begin the week of March 29th and games will start May 3rd. Regular season games will conclude July 3rd. We will also be playing some games on Saturdays and possibly Sundays this year.
Last year, Iowa City Babe Ruth made changes to bring parity within the leagues. We plan to continue that for the current season, as it proved very successful. For the newcomers, we have two leagues - National League and American League. The National League was created as more of a developmental league. All players have the choice of trying out for the American League and National League. If they choose not to try out, they will go into a blind draft for the National League only. All players are encouraged to try out to allow coaches a fair chance of assessing skills and placement. You must attend tryouts to be selected for the American League. Trying out for the American League does not guarantee placement in the American League.
Iowa City Babe Ruth has scheduled a winter baseball clinic for Saturday, February 13th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the University of Iowa Bubble. This clinic is free, and all youth who intend to play Babe Ruth Baseball during the 1999 season are encouraged to attend. Please R.S.V.P. to Roy Browning at 338-2358 (evenings) or 339-0111 (days).
To be drafted into the American League, a player MUST attend the tryout session on Saturday, March 27th beginning at 10:00 a.m. You will be notified of the time you are to attend. In case of rain out, tryouts will be held on Sunday, March 28th beginning at 12:00 noon.
As a volunteer organization, we would welcome your assistance as a coach, assistant coach, scorekeeper, concession sales, etc. If you are interested in coaching or would like more information please contact any Babe Ruth Board member. If you would be willing to help in any other area, please make note on the registration form.
This year, Iowa City has been selected to host two post-season tournaments for the all stars:
May 15-16 16 year old State Tournament
July 8-10 13 year old District Tournament
This year we are again asking for your help. Throughout all of the tournaments, we will need help with ticket taking and concession sales. If you are unable to assist with ticket or concession sales, there are other areas in which help is needed. Your Board of Directors tries to fill these needs; however, there is more help required than the 15 Directors can handle. If you can assist in any of these areas, or in any other way, please contact Terry Reynolds (Tournament Director), Ken Saylor (Press Box & Scoring), or Randy Pogemiller (League President).
Field #3 should be available by the beginning of the 1999 Babe Ruth baseball season. This should allow us to schedule 25-30 games per team.
A project is underway to build a new concession stand, storage and press box complex. A separate funds has been set up to collect funds which will be used toward this project. Any donations to this fund will be greatly appreciated.
Iowa has been given the privilege of hosting two large tournaments in 1999. The 10-12 year old Bambino Regional Tournament will be held in Iowa City at City Park July 30 through August 4. The Babe Ruth 16 year old World Series will be held in Burlington, Iowa on August 19-28 at the home of the Burlington Bees. Tournament passes will be available for purchase. Contact a Board member for details.
If you have any questions or concerns during the course of the season, please feel free to talk to your player's coach or contact any Board member. We welcome your feedback and look forward to a successful season.
