In order to understand the rituals and magick as presented in the majority of modern witchcraft, it is important to examine the symbolism and use of various working tools. What follows is a list of my own correspondences for each of the major (and in a few cases, minor) tools of the Craft. I should point out that certain elemental and God/dess associations, differ between various traditions, and that there is no one correct way to define the energies within these symbols, for the gift of the Gods is the diversity in life.

Atham A double edged knife symbolizing the dual nature of our actions, used to direct energy, particularly in casting of the circle. The atham is placed in the south, and is associated with the element of fire, representing the will. A phallic symbol, and thus one of the Horned God as well.

Book of Shadows A magickal journal kept by a witch, containing spells, invocations, herbal recipes, dreams, records of meditational exercises and ritual notes. Sometimes it is written in runes or another magickal script.
Cauldron A large pot that may contain brews, candles, spellworkings, or a fire. Associated with the Cauldron of Cerridwen, an ancient symbol of universal transformation. Its' element is that of spirit, and its direction is the center.
Chalice A goblet or cup that holds refreshment during ritual. The chalice is placed in the west, associated with the element of water, and thus the emotions. A symbol of the Goddess and Her womb, holding the waters of life.
PentacleA disc of metal, wood, or clay with perhaps a pentagram and various other symbols inscribed on it. Its usually seen as being a symbol of the north, and the element of earth. Used to charge objects, such as cakes and wine, or used as a symbol of protection.
WandThis is a stick or small branch that is used to direct energy (much like the atham). Its placed to the east side of the altar. Sometimes used to invoke the Goddess & God Represents the Element Air. Directs energy. The picture below is of a fancy Wand that is sold by most craft stores! I have 3. A wooden one I made myself & a fancy one, but my most treasured is the one I made from the rib bone of a deer. I have runes painted on it. I feel its my most powerful!

It should be understood that none of the tools mentioned above are required for the formulation of magick or ritual. The only tool necessary is the self, properly prepared through training. The tools are used as symbolic triggers for our Power, nothing more. It would be unwise, however, to dismiss their importance in magickal operations. By meditating on the significance of each tool, varying insights, emotions, visions, may emerge spurring you further on your path. After working with the tools to any level of proficiency, one will find increased magickal ability, and control of that ability, with or without the presence of working tools.
