"What kind of candles should I use?"
You can use any candles you like. Chose ones that smell good (or have no scent), since you'll have to put up with the smell for several hours. I use boring old candles from the craft store or grocery store. I like tapers and votives for spells; jar candles (like Yankee candles) are my choice for "around the house" decorating.
How long do I have to burn the candle?
I won't condescend & give you the "unattended candle" lecture. You can burn them in the bathtub (if you don't want to pinch/snuff out the flames) or if you have to leave. Don't blow out candles; pinch or snuff them, locking the energy in. I have a dog who often forgets he has a tail. So the coffee table is not a good place to burn my spell candles. I usually burn mine at my desk or wherever I am.
Basically, you have three choices for spell candles:
*Burn the candle nonstop until it extinguishes itself
*Pinch/snuff the candle if you must and relight it to continue the spell
*Make a "seven day" candle. Mark notches on your candle & burn to each notch every day for seven days
By color
White: positive spells of any nature, spiritual enlightenment, lunar energy/esbat, cleansing/purification

Black: Banish evil, absorb negativity/illness, ridding of bad habits, the unconscious (use in rituals to induce a deep meditative state)
Red: Health, passion, love, sex, physical strength/energy, courage, willpower, protection
