For nearly four hundred years, New York has been host to historic events that have shaped our nation. The courts of New York have played a prominent role in guiding the Empire State through the myriad legal issues that have arisen in its history. The Historical Society of the Courts of the State of New York is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of this extensive judicial heritage. The Society maintains archives documenting our jurisprudential legacy in several collections. We offer information on notable jurists, including biographies and photographs. Also featured are histories and photographs of the Court of Appeals, the Appellate Divisions, the State Supreme Courts as well as other state and local courthouses. Notorious trials and landmark legal decisions may be examined in depth in our Cases collection. Our On-Line Library contains a vast array of information detailing the state's legal history. Information on the Society's programs and publications, including related activities that may be of interest to our members, may be found in the News section.

Dating from New York's colonial days, when the Burgher Court was established in 1656 in the Dutch controlled Colony of New Amsterdam, through the 1665 Court of Assizes and the 1691 Supreme Court of Judicature in the English-governed Colony of New York, to the present day State Unified Court System, New York boasts an ancient and venerable legal tradition that is unparalleled in our nation's history. The Historical Society of the Courts of the State of New York has been established to document and preserve this history and to create a public record of the people and events that shaped our jurisprudence.
