Physiology TEST III

Physiology 2.5.99

PITUITARY

Anterior Pituitary

-                      Follicle Stimulating Hormone

-                      Leutenizing Hormone

-

Hypothalamus à Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone à Somatotropin à Growth Hormone à (Liver) à Somatomedin C

Pigmies and ….Dwarfs à deficient in Somatomedin C (yet, contain normal levels of GH)

Preprohormone à In Endoplasmic Reticulum – Prohormone à In Golgi Apperatus/membrane à Hormone release

Insulin is @ 6% prohormone

Growth Hormone

-                      Diminishes as we age to about 25 %

-                      May contribute to Osteoporosis

-                      Senior athletes still maintained GH levels around 50-60%

-                      Physical Stress – activates the secretion of GH

-               Circadian Rhythm

-                      GH release is increased around 8pm and Midnight

-                      Cortisol is lower in the evening

-                      Sleep derived children may not grow as quickly

Hormones controlled by Metabolism

Posterior Pituitary

-                      Release ADH & Oxytocin

-                      Octipeptides only different by two amino acids (8 a.a.)

-                      Neuropeptide hormone produced in the nerve body

-                      Oxytocin

-                      Positive feedback – more stretch = more release

-                      Milk let down

-                      Neural stimulus (sound, smell) may control let down

-                      May be responsible for ejaculation
