CDC--Center for Disease Control

·        one of the largest agencies of the US government

·        spends more money than any other agency

·        has a number of different departments

·        name tells you its function

·        located in Atlanta,GA

  1. International support--any international crisis of health
  2. Diagnostic for difficult to diagnosis diseases--millions of samples are sent to them from US and other countries; help in diagnosis--free service
  3. Tracking of outbreaks of diseases in the US and to predict any future outbreaks--sometimes they are successful and other times they are not
  4. Health education and training to those in the US and other countries--Goodwill Mission
  5. Some research--not a major research agency (Main research facility is NIH)
  6. Many bureaus and labs
  7. NIOSH--National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health--outside Philadelphia--occupational research--ergnomics--NOT A PART OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

·        OSHA--occupational safety and health act passed in 1970; created the angency Occupational Safety and Health Administraton--PART OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

 

Food and Drug Administration

·        One of the most controversial agency

·        Linked to drugs that are approved and then w/drawn every year

·        1200-1500 drugs are w/drawn every year

·        study and determine the effectiveness of drugs

·        approves drugs and things in drug and grocery stores

·        approved after appropriate study

·        takes years to be approved

·        was created w/general purpose of protecting/helping people

·        has many bureaus

·        toxicology labs all over the country that constantly examines products

·        on the look out for industry that is breaking the law

·        DEA--drug enforcement agency

 

USDA

·        Not a part of Public Health service

·        Part of Department of Agriculture

·        Oversee produce, meat, dairy

·        Everything in grocery store is approved by USDA or FDA

·        Cabinet position

·        Food imports are safe and free of pesticides and insecticides

·        Reduction of food borne diseases

·        Unhappiness w/products from other countries which are laced w/insecticides that are not allowed in US

 

FTC--Federal Trade Commission

·        Safety of imports

·        Includes food items from other countries (esp. prepackaged foods)

·        Looks at other imports in addition to food

 

EPA--Environmental Protection Agency

·        Things present in environment can end up in our food

·        Not a part of Public Health services

·        1970

·        against hazardous environment

·        has not been very successful

·        has problems w/legislation

·        don't want to affect industry b/c of competition w/other countries

 

NIH--National Institutes of Health

·        responsible for research

·        Bathesda, MD--just outside Washington, DC
