Treatment:  streptomycin (hearing loss) and gentamycin

Prevention:  avoid skinning wild animals; tick infested areas—avoid

Vaccine:  not recommended for general population and is not 100% effective; only need if work in a profession w/wild animals; need the vaccine every 3-5 yrs

 

Helicobacter pylori

·        Gastric ulcers

·        Peptic ulcers

·        Chronic gastritis, cofactor stomach cancer

·        90-95% of symptoms

·        4 million Americans suffer from ulcers each year

·        46,000 operations and 14,000 death/year

·        Tagament is a control agent not a cure

·        Antibiotics have reported cure rates of 80-90%, but must be carefurl

·        75-95% recurrance

·        3rd generation Cephaloporins

·        may or may not be causative agent

Afipia Felis—cat scratch fever, zoonosis—tetracycline

Brronella rochalimaea—cat scratch fever; superficial lesion that resembles Kaposi's sarcoma—tetracycline
