AIDS

-HIV, retroviridae, enveloped, spherical

-enzyme, reverse transcriptase and protease

-may have come from some of the animal viruses like primates (African Green Monkey)

-how did it come to humans--have not been clearly defined

-maybe a hunter working w/contaminated animals

-1980 have recognized AIDS in adults which has taken a very heavy tole on the world

-seen in most countries around the world

-some more affected than others

-1979-found cure/treatment for almost every infectious disease then AIDS came about

-drug combination therapy that will prolong a patient's life

-we cannot change a person's status

-these 2 first ID the virus in the blood of people who had the disease

-has been seen in cerain populations than others

-transmission is more prominent in homosexual males 60-70% of patients

-virus present in semen into anal blood vessels

-intravenous drug use/abuse 20% of cases

-heterosexuals 6-7% fastes growing population

-congenital-2%

-1-2% from blood transfusion

-accidental cases <1%

-in US about 5 million are HIV positive

-250,000 have died since we have recognized AIDS

-incubation period--highly variable (months to years)

-16 years positive but no symptoms

-better nutrition and exercise have increased chance of later development of the disease

-mortality rate is 67%; some people believe 100% mortality once AIDS symptoms have died
