Microbiology

p575-6

papovaviridae--Human papilloma-viruses--warts, cervical and penile cancer--p562-3

                -mucous membranes

-grow wide spread on body; genital, oral

                -viral infection lasts a lifetime

                -remains in surrounding tissue

-most are benign

-a few are malignant--condylomata acuminata (cervical cancer)

                -transmission is direct contact

-surgically removed cervical, women 2 PAP tests a year

-grow larger than normal in immunodeficiencies

                -genital warts are sexually transmitted

Tx:  cryotherapy (freezing of tissue w/liquid CO2 or liquid N2 and excision of infected tissue)

-podophylin, salicylic acid and glutaraldehyde, surgery, 5-fluorouracil(antimetabolites)

                -interferon

                -high reoccurrence

Molluscum Contagiousum

-orthopoxviruses and parapoxviruses

-DNA

-immunocompromised people have severe lesions around mouth

Rubella Measles p 558, 559

-rubella virus

-togavirus/arbovirus

-transmitted by arthropods--except rubella

-rubella is transmitted through airborne, droplet route--German Measles

-not a very serious disease

-skin rash

-crosses the placenta and causes severe damage to fetus

-30% of American females enter childbearing age w/o being exposed to German Measles virus therefore w/o developing any immunity to it--first trimester is the most risky (early cataract for fetus)

-ELISA-Rubella--enzyme linked immune assay

-immunize w/attenuated live virus

-vaccine should not become pregnant for 3 months

Moribilli Measles p 559

-not a member of the same family as Rubella

-paramyxovirus

-RNA

-fever producing disease--childhood

-Koplik's spots--red spot w/central bluish area

-upper respiratory and ear infections are common

-Measles Encephalitis

-30% mortality rate

-measles remain in the brain tissue

-6-8 years after measles in children who had before age 3

-300,000 children die every year from measles

-problem--secondary infections (respiratory)
