(linear DNA), orthopoxvirus, enveloped, complex, large, carries some enzymes

diseases
-airborne virus--respiratory

-quickly becomes blood borne
-responsible for lesions all
over the body
-fluid filled vesicle
lesions
-leaves permanent scars
-leaves person
-disfigured
-death
-loss of special senses
-seasonal disease, early
summer/late spring
-people were afraid of going
out
-artificial immunization,
late 1700's, Edward Jenner
-milkmaid suffered from cow
pox w/lesion on finger
-she suffered from cow pox
and did not suffer from small pox
-small pox
vaccine--attenuated form of vaccina virus has similar antigens as small pox but
was not pathogenic to humans
-have not have a case in US
since 1948 and the world 1980
-scientist believe that we
have eradicated small pox, but some still have the virus
-after 1974 have not been
vaccinated for small pox
