Herpes simplex Virus

I-    -not as serious as type II

      -Found in 90% of population

      -Permanent house guest

      -p708, Fig 25.16

      -areas above the belt

      type II below the belt

      -fever blisters

      -labial herpes

      -kerititis, may lead to blindness

      -encephalitis, brain infection

      -can cause death

      -Tx:  Vidarabine(brain infections), Idoxy-urdine (eye

             infections)

      -close personal contact

II    -more serious

      -associated w/sexual transmission

      -major STD

      -known for horrible consequences for person and those

        it is passed to

      -p273

      -ch 25, HSV, p715-719

      -reoccurring blisters on genitalia

      -+ person can remain hidden in system

      -stress, immunocompromise, emotions, illness can cause

       outbreak

      -herpes is non-curable, can't get rid of

      -can only advise to ways to prevent outbreaks

      -can be transmitted to newborn through infected birth

       canal--deadly to neonate (neonatal herpes)

      -associated w/ cervical cancer

      -congenital diseases acquired through placental

       crossing

      -acquired from traveling through birth canal

      -not generally considered deadly

      -second most frequently transmitted STD

      -hemophilus ducreri is a bacteria 'sofchancre' similar

      -Tx:  Acyclovir Vidarabine---only help relieve symptoms

      -cortisone should not be used, has many problems

      -p718--can cause pneumonia

 

Varicella Zoster

      -chicken pox and shingles causing herpes virus

      -chicken pox is childhood disease

      -can reemerge later in life as shingles

      -Chicken pox--fluid filled vesicles,

      -Tx:  none

      -shingles is very painful, lesions along major nerve

       routes, mainly older immunocomprimised people

      -Tx:  morphine and nerve suppression

 

Cytomegalovirus   (CMV) (salivary gland virus)

      -inside cover, p

      -early thought to be causative agent of AIDS

      -might mimic symptoms of infectious mono

      -weakness, immunosupression, tired,

      -more damage to newborn from mother through placenta

      -5000 cases/yr in USA

-can cause spleen & liver damage, mental retardation,

       blindness, death

      -suppression immune system

-karpsoi's sarcoma, perhaps a few cases, but mainly HIV

      -associated w/ homosexuals through transmission

 

 

Ebstein Bar Virus

      1.  infectious mononucleosis (kissing disease)

            -prolonged period of exhaustion, aches and pains

             fevers, incapacity of person

            -sore throat, bleeding gums

            -may last for a year

      2. Burkitt's Lymphoma  and Nasopharyngeal Cancer

            -ch 23

            -cancer of the jaw

            -African children who have malaria
