Urinalysis

·        Common, easy lab exam

·        Can find out a number of things

·        Can check for some important ds

o       Diabetes

o       Kidney ds

·        Nephron

o       Glomerulus

o       Capillary—cubiodal cells

o       Filtration

o       Selective reabsorption occurs

o       180L water/24hr filtered and excrete 1L

o       3-4g/dl—10mg/dl is normal trace—protein

o       Nephrotic syndrome

§         60% of plasma proteins is albumin

§         Therefore losing albumin

§         Plasma protein will be low

§         Lost osmotic control

§         Most of the protein is reabsorbed and only have trace amounts in urine

§         Test is specific for albumin

·        Urinary sediment

o       UT

o       Casts

o       UA

o       RBCs

o       WBC's

o       Bacteria
