CBC (Complete Cell Count)
- Battery of tests
- Hematocrit--% of red cells—put blood in tube, spin it down, RBCs go to the bottom, normal range is 36-53%
- Not enough red cells is anemia (not enough O2 carrying ability)
- Females is a little lower than males
- Cytocrit--% of cells
- Hemoglobin—measured by the amount of light it absorbs, varies w/[hemoglobin]
- Cyannet hemoglobin—combination that is actually measured, hemoglobin would bind O2 in the air which would give a different ready, the binding of cyanide is different giving a better ready
- Normal is 12-18g/dL
- DL (deciliter)—1/10 L, 100mL, 100cc
- RBC count
- 4-6 x 106 /microL (1 millionth of a liter) (1 thousandth of a mL)
- RBC indices
- MCV—mean volume of the average RBC
- 10-15 fL
- normal size—normocytic
- macrocytic—larger than normal
- microcytic—smaller than normal
- need to understand formula
- 1L of blood
- pico grams
Platelet
WBC
- neutrophils
- lymphocytes
- monocytes
- eosinophils
- basophils
- neutrophils
for exam hemocytometer
- device for counting blood cells manually
H/H
15g/dL—45% hematocrit—RBC count 5x106
Rule of 3
