"Daniel's Fish Fund"
In January 1994, a little two-year-old boy, Daniel was diagnosed with Philadelphia positive leukaemia, with chromosomes 9 and 22 translocating. He went to develop further chromosomal changes involving chromosomes 1 and 19 translocating and chromosomes 7 and 13 breaking off.
Daniel has undergone 2 ALLOGENIC, or donor, Bone Marrow transplants
Daniel's grandmother, Angela Hughes, heard about the work of Professor Lorna Secker - Walker and Dr Christine Harrison, and there research team at the Royal Free Hospital, London, and organises support for the research through "Daniel's fish fund".
"Daniel's FISH Fund" has, so far, brought a refrigerator for storing culture medium and other reagents, use din preparing the bone marrow for chromosome analysis, sometimes for storing marrow samples. It has also brought several important reference books in the field of cancer Cytogenetics, a laser printer for the pictures of the chromosomes; special equipment for the FISH technique; probes and special filters for the microscopes.
"Daniel's Fish Fund" enables the research team to learn more about, not only Philadelphia and other abnormal chromosomes, but also more about leukaemia, better ways of treating it, and thus and helping all those like Daniel.
All monies raised go straight into the laboratory research work at the Royal Free Hospital.
