Description:
This gopher server is implemented on an Indigo
Silicon Graphics, one of several in a cluster. The
whole system covers about 15 GByte of data. The
operating system is IRIX 4.0, and is merely SysV
with BSD 4.3 extensions. Operating stoftware
includes standard TCP/IP, Decnet phase IV (in
Switzerland only).
The biology software used here is the GCG program
package, and William Pearson's FASTA program suite. The
main usage of GCG is currently still VMS bound,
therefore, remote submission of jobs from VAX/VMS
is possible in a transparent fashion.
The Hierarchical Access System for Sequence
Libraries in Europe (HASSLE) is developed on this
sytem as far as the UNIX flavour goes.
The gopher software on this computer was originally
taken from Don Gilbert's distribution and has been
modified in order to allow the use on all databases
needed within this server, such as EMBL, SWISSPROT,
etc. This server is not financed for use as
international or national resource. If you like
it, send me a mail, and I could use it as
justification that I need more funding.

This document describes the CAMIS Gopher and the
files available through this information source.
There is an experimental and dynamic nature to this
Gopher, and we regret any inconvenience caused by
this. There are also files that may only be
accessed by members of the local community that
this Gopher serves.
WHAT IS CAMIS
CAMIS is an acronym for the Center for Advanced
Medical Informatics at Stanford. CAMIS is a shared
computing resource supporting research activities
in biomedical informatics at the Stanford
University School of Medicine.
WHAT'S IN THE CAMIS GOPHER
1. Local (CAMIS) Title Search
This is an index search of the directory and
document names in the CAMIS Gopher. This is a
great tool for locating files and directories that
are relevant to your needs. It is especially useful
if you know something is available in this Gopher,
but you forgot where it is. For example, if you
wanted to find "computer price lists," you would
select the "Local (CAMIS) Title Search" and type
computer price lists and you would get the
following result:
Local (CAMIS) Title Search: computer price
lists
--> 1. Stanford (Microdisc) Computer Price
Lists/
2. IMC: Institute for Medical Computer
sciences (AKH Wien)/
3. Mail Distribution Lists.
You could then view the results (presumably the
top
result as it appears to be the most appropriate).
NOTE You may use partial words, Boolean
variables and quotation marks in this search (see
The Test Searching Capabilities directory in this
directory for more information).
2. INTERNET-WIDE TITLE SEARCH
This is an index search similar to the Local
(CAMIS) Title Search, but for the entire Internet.
There is currenty no Boolean capability
(obviously), nor partial word or phrase searching.
If you type in, say, "informatics," you might get
the following:
1. HEALTH INFORMATICS (HInf).
2. HINF - Health Informatics.
3. PROG-GENOME INFORMATICS PROGRAM.
4. PROG-NLM FELLOWSHIP IN APPLIED
INFORMATICS.
5. The Informatics Teaching Laboratory/
6. International Olympiad of Informatics/
3. ABOUT THE CAMIS GOPHER
Contains information about the CAMIS Gopher,
Gopher in general, and several Gopher clients in
particular, as well as a directory for testing the
searching capabilities of this Gopher server.
4. BIO-MEDICAL AND RELATED GOPHERS
This directory contains pointers to other
Gopher sources that include "Medical Schools",
"Medical Publications, Genetic Engineering,
Computational Biology, etc."
5. CAMIS (CENTER FOR ADVANCED MEDICAL INFORMATICS
AT STANFORD)
This directory contains information such as
"Technical Report Abstracts", the "SMI Publication
List", a schedule of colloquia, journal club,
seminars and other documents and resources useful
to student and staff of the Section on Medical
Informatics (SMI).
6. COMPUTING INFO
This directory contains computing information
for the Section on Medical Informatics (SMI)
community as well as that of the Knowledge Systems
Laboratory (KSL). Additionally, pointers to
information outside SMI and KSL are included. These
include various index searches of various
Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) archives.
The UNIX man pages are currently not indexed,
but we hope to do this in the future.
7. FIND PEOPLE, PLACES, PROGRAMS, PHONE NUMBERS
This directory contains location services which
can be helpful in finding e-mail addresses,
programs at ftp sites, area codes, phone numbers,
and WAIS information source names.
8. HEURISTIC PROGRAMMING PROJECT
This directory contains, among other things,
the HPP FTP files.
9. KSL MAIL ARCHIVES
This directory contains collections of e-mail
messages for various groups within Stanford, CAMIS
and the KSL and without (ai-medicine). This archive
is currently only available to part of Stanford.
10. NIH, NSF, AND FUNDING
This directory contains pointers to the NIH
Guide, NIH Program Info, a search of NSF Awards,
and a link to the National Science Foundation
Gopher, among other things.
11. NEWS (STANFORD, USENET, CLARINET)
This is a pointer to collections of news
resources made available to the Stanford University
community. Included are Stanford Events, Stanford
Press Releases, USENET groups and more.
12. ONLINE LIBRARY CATALOGS
This directory contains a collection of
pointers to library telnet sessions. Instructions
for searching on varying different systems are
included, as is login information. Launching a
telnet session is handled in different ways (or not
at all) by different Gopher clients. See client-
specific documentation for information about
launching telnet sessions.
13. SUMEX-AIM ARCHIVES (INCLUDING INFO-MAC)
This directory includes the popular INFO-Mac
directory of ftp'able files. This directory also
contains many of the ftp'able files from the CAMIS
community. Different gopher clients handle binhexed
files and ftp'ing differently (or not at all). See
client-specific documentation for information about
ftp and binhex.
14. WORLD FULL OF INFO SOURCES
This directory is a pointer to the University
of Minnesota's collection of pointers to gopher and
WAIS servers around the world.
15. MISCELLANEOUS
This directory contains pointers to selected,
interesting information sources cleaned from #13
above. This directory includes weather information,
movie reviews, a Webster's Dictionary search, a
Roget's Thesaurus search, and more.

Description:
The name of the Center derives from Computer
Assisted Organic Synthesis and Computer Assisted
Molecular Modelling. It is a national expertise
center for computer aided chemistry and offers
university chemists a package of software tools for
remote use on a central computer system.
The emphasis is on easy accessibility, achieved
by
the application of menu controlled program front-
ends and interfaces, and on integration of the
various tools and data bases. An example of the
latter is the interconversion of molecular
structure files between structural data bases,
modelling software and computational programs.
An overview of available tools is obtained from
the
main graphics menu and a hierarchy of alphanumeric
menus. Tools are arranged in groups according to
their application. Apart from the two subjects
mentioned in the name of the Center, other major
chemical disciplines covered are biomolecular
sequence analysis and computational chemistry. A
full description of the menu items is given in the
present text. The Center issues a newsletter to
keep subscribers informed on changes, additions and
Programs are activated either from an alphanumeric
menu, or by command, typing the corresponding name.
Program input and output is graphical where
appropriate.
Through a combination of on-line help facilities,
practical courses and the (re)production of manuals
the Center supports the use of its tools by
chemists without computer experience. A news and
conferencing system running on the VAX aims at
improving the exchange of information and
experience among users, including the Center's
staff.

CODI Cornucopia of Disability Information
CODI is a gopher, intended to serve as a community
resource for consumers and professionals by
providing, via the Internet, disability related
information in a wide variety of areas. The
information addresses university (SUNY @ Buffalo),
local (Buffalo & WNY), state, national and
international audiences. Its contents are
determined by these communities; their submissions
and suggestions are
welcome.
Ideally, material should be submitted in computer
readable form. However, printed text is also
acceptable if the print quality is sufficient for
it to be scanned. (Generally, xerox copies scan
poorly.) Often, it becomes necessary to rewrite or
reformat the material. As a result, errors may
appear. Please notify me of these so They may be
corrected.
Currently, the material is accessible via 22 main
menu items. This article, 'About the Cornucopia of
Disability Information', is the first menu item.
Due to the continuous addition of new information
the organization of the menus is bound to change,
along with their contents. Because of CODI's size
and its frequency of change, menu item #2., What's New
in Codi, is included for the frequent browser.
What's New lists modifications, their dates and
locations.
#3. Search Menus allows boolean searches of all
the CODI menus for keywords using jughead.
#4. NY State & Local Services is intended
to
provide information and directories of services in New
York. Comprehensive local servicer information has
been gathered by the Independent Living Center of
WNY. State wide information has been provided by
VESID, Office of Vocational and Educational
Services for Individuals with Disabilities, and by
the NYS Office of Advocate for the Disabled.
#5. College Services and Resources has the
membership lists of two area Collegiate Consortium
of Disability Advocates. Each of these consortia
have approximately 50 institional members. These
lists are included so that potential students can
identify campus contacts who can provide
information about accessibility, policy and
services. A submenu contains information about
SUNY @ Buffalo. Information from other areas and
colleges is welcome.
#6. National Information Sources on Disabilities
is a publication of the NIDRR. It contains 7
national subdirectories: Directory of Organizations,
List of Directories Organized by Category, Cross Index
of Organizations by Function/Service, Directory
of Data Bases, Directory of Hot Lines, Directory
of Religious Organizations, and Directory of
Sports Organizations.
#7. Digest of Data on Persons with Disabilities
1992 is another NIDRR publication. 'This document
draws from many sources of published data and
narrative explanations issued by federal
statistical agencies and other sources on the
subject of disability.' Unfortunately, the many
tables and graphs lack the quality of the
original document.
#8. Coming to Terms with Disabilities is a
product of the New York State Senate Select Committee
on the Disabled: A Compilation of Vocabulary
Relating to Visible and Non-Visible Disabilities.
It is offered as a primer to further inform those
who are interested in learning more about
disabilities, and as a catalyst to stimulate
awareness in those who may have previously shied
away from seeking explanations because of the
technical terms involved. The information contained
herein is based on a voluminous amount of
information which was forwarded to the Committee
by people with disabilities, advocates, medical
doctors, service agencies, parents, friends,
rehabilitation specialists, therapists, educators,
counselors and numerous other professionals in the
field.
#9. WNY TDD Directory is a collection of local,
state and national TDD phone numbers. This
directory was assembled by Deaf Adult Services of
WNY. Additions to the directory are encouraged.
For information about other TDD numbers, see under
Computing, 'Managing Information Resources for
Accessibility' (section 11).
#10. Government Documents is intended as a
collection of legislation, regulations and
legislative summaries. The collection is in the
process of being assembled. The Americans with
Disabilities Act is actually located on another
gopher, infoslug.ucsc.edu. Access is transparent
to the CODI reader. Also, see Electronic Resources
for access to many other documents located on
other gophers and ftp sites.
#11. Computing has information relating to
adaptive hardware and software. The document,
Managing Information Resources for Accessibility,
provides a comprehensive overview. Other
information includes two articles by Joe Lazzaro
which appeared in BYTE magazine plus detailed
technology information and directories assembled by the
IBM Special Needs Information Referral Center.
#12. Legal contains two directories for sources
of
legal assistance: State Protection and Advocacy
Agencies and Legal and Advocacy Organizations.
Also, there are a number of publications which
were prepared by Mark H. Leeds, Esq. of the
Association of the Bar New York City: Its The
Law, Rights and Responsibilities, and Rights of People
with Disabilities. Its The Law is written for the
layman. Rights and Responsibilities is
written for agencies and departments of the City of New
York. This document can serve as a model for any
public institution.
#13. Publications currently contains 8 articles
of
broad interest. Except for Newsletters and
Journals, at this time there is no single source
of a comprehensive list of publications. However,
many focused lists are contained elsewhere in
CODI, especially within
#14. Network Resources has information about FTP
sites, bulletin boards and other network
resources. In addition, several related gophers
are directly accessed: HealthLine, Recordings for
the Blind, Deaf Gopher, Medical Resources, and
Electronic Rehabilitation Resource Center.
Primitive access is available to some FTP sites
including Project EASI via other gophers. One
subdirectory points to an extensive collection of
electronic text found on other gophers and ftp
sites.
#15. Other Directories has the membership list
of
the President's Committee on Employment of People
with Disabilities, two RCEP II directories (CAPs
and ILCs) and a national list of support
organizations compiled by the IBM Special Needs
Information Referral Center.
#16. Independent Living has the ILRU Directory
of
Independent Living programs.
#17. Bibliographic Information has two
collections. The History of Disabilities and
Social Problems by Gary Woodill represents the
results of an extensive library search undertaken
in 1987-1988 as part of his research on the
history of disabilities and special education. The
other is a ftp site with files that contain
bibliographies and reference guides prepared by
the National Library Service for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped (NLS). (The complete data
is available via Network Resources, Electronic
Rehabilitation Resource Center.)
#18. Heath Resource Center - Resource Directory
The HEATH Resource Directory is a biannual
selection of resources in the major areas of
interest in the field of postsecondary education
and disability.
#19. NAtional Rehabilitation Information Center
(NARIC) contains ABLEDATA Fact Sheets and Top 10
Searches, REHABDATA Top 10 Searches, NARIC
Quarterly, a Serials Survey and a number of

Description:
The objectives of HGMP-RC computing is to establish
and make available databases of genes, genetic
markers and map locations, and to develop new
computing environments and methods for acquisition
and analysis of such data. Computing and
networking facilities were developed by the MRC to
provide online computing support to the Project.
The facilities are connected to a number of other
computing systems in centers of genetics and
molecular biology research excellence worldwide
through national and international wide area
networks (WAN's). At present, the HGMP Gopher
Service offers access to databases maintained by
the Resource Centre. They can be found under the
"HGMP Databases" option of the HGMP Gopher Service
menu.
To registered users the HGMP-RC computing
facilities offer more comprehensive services.
Genetics and other databases, application software
and miscellaneous services are available on the
HGMP servers and other systems around the world
through the HGMP-RC Menu system using workstations,
personal computers or terminals from variety of
manufacturers, equipped with appropriate networking
and graphical facilities and connected to a
suitable WAN. Several user manuals describing the
usage of the HGMP-RC computing facilities have been

The European Molecular Biology Network (EMBnet)
seeks to provide a communications infrastructure,
access to research data and support for
bioinformatics research. Further, new topics in
this area are to be stimulated by providing a
communication and education forum.
Several types of services are provided on national
nodes:
1) Daily updates to DNA sequence data are received
from EMBL, and properly archived to provide a most
up-to date DNA sequence database. Synchronization
of the distributed data base is enforced by a
quarterly release on tape or CD-ROM. Because of the
limited network bandwidth, and the nature of the
service, incremental updates are sent as compressed
files, which are to be handled individually at the
national nodes.
2) Daily DNA sequence updates are forwarded to
other national sites who wish to keep their own
data set. The mechanisms employed depend on the
infrastructure available and range from electronic
mailing of abstracts to providing complete binary
copies of indexed databases for particular
application packages.
3) Login services are provided to researchers who
wish to use the national node's infrastructure and
facilities for biocomputing. The installations
usually offer application software to utilize
sequence data of both public databases and one's
own research data. Additionally, electronic mail
and Usenet news are available at most of the sites.

(ICGEBnet) Description:
The primary purpose of the ICGEB computer resource
(ICGEBnet) is to disseminate the best of currently
available computational technology to the molecular
biologists of the ICGEB research community. The
major objectives are:
to provide computational assistance to ICGEB
molecular biologists in planning experiments, and
analyzing protein and nucleic acid sequences.
ICGEBnet provides on-line access to the major
sequence data banks among which the EMBL nucleic
acid sequence data bank is updated on a daily basis
(see below) to promote the rapid sharing of information
and collaboration among the ICGEB Member Country
scientists through an international computer link,
electronic bulletin boards, electronic mail
services, and a host of freely available PC
software. ICGEBnet is part of EMBnet, the
informatics network of the European Molecular
Biology Organization.
Access to the ICGEBnet resource is available to all
ICGEB Member Country scientists; however,
preference will be given to those scientists whose
research is directly related to the research goals
of ICGEB. The principal mechanism for remote access
to the ICGEBnet resource is via the X.25 Public
Data Network (PDN). ICGEBnet is connected to the
ITAPAC X.25 PDN via a leased data communication
line allowing for 16 simultaneous incoming
connections.
ICGEBnet is maintained by ICGEB's Computer Services
in collaboration with ICGEB's Protein Structure and
Function Group. Research is focused on search
methods for distant protein sequence homologies.
They maintain SBASE, a library of protein domains
with over 24,000 entries and are developing methods
based on parametric representation and Fourier
analysis.

Marshall University School of Medicine Gopher
Server for Rural Health Care Resources &
Information
Description:
The Marshall University School of Medicine in Huntington, WV,
has developed a Gopher Server focused on Rural Health Care.
In addition to subject-oriented access to other health care
resources, this gopher includes information on the Kellogg
Community Partnerships Rural Health Grant in West Virginia,
the West Virginia Rural Health Initiative, and rural health
programs and research at the Marshall University School of
Medicine. Files from the Rural Information Center Health
Service and the Food and Nutrition Information Center of
FedWorld have been posted as well, including lists of rural
health publications, conferences and grant opportunities.
This gopher also archives the session notes from
the Kellogg
& RHI Multidisciplinary Sessions, rural problem-based-
learning sessions for medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing,
physical therapy and social work students from all of the
health care education institutions within the state.

Description:
UCLA Disabilities and Computing Program (UCLA-DCP)
link to the gopher has been added to the SJU
Electronic Rehabilitation Resource Center gopher.
The goal for the UCLA-DCP Gopher is to focus on
locally developed resources (regional
specialties -- sounds appetizing!). These are
publications, planning documents, annual reports
and so forth that come out of our experience here
at UCLA. The idea is to share what we've learned.
I don't intend to develop a large resource data
base of disability resources. Rather we point to
CODI and St. Johns and other sites that have large
resource gophers that cover this need very well.
