An Access System for Databases Distributed on
EARN/BITNET. The ASTRA service maintains multiple
databases called META databases. Each one has an
abstract containing information about the contents,
i.e. title, name of the authors, a brief description
of the database, the main arguments dealt with in the
database and the language. Of interest to those in the
health sciences is the ONCO database.
ONCO database
This bibliographic list keeps track of the work
concerning ongoing research related to the Oncology
field in Italy. The list includes work from different
research groups at various institutions. The language
is English.
NETWORK ACCESS AND USAGE The ASTRA database is
accessible by EARN/BITNET and
non- EARN/BITNET users. For EARN/BITNET users, user
interfaces for IBM VM/CMS and DEC VAX/VMS are
developed. Also a batch language format has been
developed for non-EARN/BITNET users and users of
different operation systems.
To access the ASTRA system the EARN/BITNET users
must
have the user interface on their disk. The user
interface can be obtained from
ASTRADB@ICNUCEVM with the following commands:
For IBM VM/CMS GET ASTRA EXEC
For DEC VAX/VMS GET ASTRA PAS
After the files are received and stored on the disk,
the server is accessed by entering:
For IBM VM/CMS ASTRA
For DEC VAX/VMS RUN ASTRA
Detailed information on the system can be retrieved
by
getting the file ASTRA INFO from ASTRADB@ICNUCEVM.

This section provides information on the following
topics:
1. Description of the Service
2. Instructions
3. Questions or Problems?
4. Legal Notice
5. Credits
6. Routes of Access to the Service
1. DESCRIPTION OF THE SERVICE:
The Bioethics Online Service is an information resource
of the Center for the Study of Bioethics and the Health
Information Technology Center (HITC) of the Medical
College of Wisconsin (MCW).
The Bioethics Online Service consists of:
a. The Bioethics Database
b. The Bioethics Center and Wisconsin Ethics
Committee Network (WECN) News and Announcements section
c. The Bioethics Online E-mail Service
The features of the service are available for
use
through the Internet or by accessing the Medical
Information Network (MIN) of the Health Information
Technology Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
The Bioethics Database is an update service providing
information on current bioethics topics, including news
reports, abstracts of pertinent journal articles,
legislative actions and court decisions, with
intermittent commentary. The information is searchable
by key words.
The Bioethics Center and Wisconsin Ethics Committee
Network (WECN) News and Announcements section posts
news from the Bioethics Center, including speakers,
conferences, journal clubs, and other presentations. It
also posts news of the Wisconsin Ethics Committee
Network, and information about its Speakers Bureau. A
second feature of this section is a case discussion
area.
The Bioethics Online E-mail Service allows users
to
send messages worldwide to those users of the Bioethics
Online Service who have E-mail addresses through the
Medical College of Wisconsin or have Internet
addresses. You must have an Outreach Account or a Post
Account through the Medical College of Wisconsin, or
have an Internet address to be able to utilize the
Bioethics Online E-mail Service.
2. BIOETHICS ONLINE SERVICE DATABASE INSTRUCTIONS:
Using the Bioethics Database gopher:
The Bioethics Database menu has several numbered
options. Select an option with the up/down arrow keys
and
special symbol. These symbols identify each menu entry
as follows:
/ Item is a directory
. Item is a text file
<?> Item is a search index
<) Item is a sound (looks like a speaker)
By noting the symbols at the end of each entry you will
know what to expect when selecting a given menu
choice. For example, if the menu entry you select ends
with a "/", you will see another directory of choices;
if it is a ".", a text file is presented; etc.
(Note: The Bioethics Database does not support
or <) entries.)
After viewing a text file, you have the option
of
saving it to a file, printing it, or sending it to
someone's mailbox (Note: MIN users without accounts are
only provided the mail option). All printing occurs
remotely at the ITS (Information Technology Systems)
computer room. Please do not print files unless you
are a local MCW user. All output is retrieved at the
MCW ITS office.
The Bioethics Database is menu driven and very
user
friendly. A help screen is always available by typing
"?". Traverse up menu levels with "u" (for up). Quit
at any time with "q".
The Search Index
When you select a search index you are prompted for the
word(s) to search on. The Bioethics Database supports
natural language queries. All matches are ranked based
on the number of matches found. For example, to search
for articles on ethics or AIDS you could type:
Index word(s) to search for: ethics aids
Search specifications are not case sensitive
Additional information on this service is available
by
typing "?" at any menu.
3. QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS?
If you have technical questions or problems, please
contact the MCW Information Technolgy Systems office.

What is CDC WONDER?
CDC WONDER is software for DOS based
microcomputers that creates a fast
and efficient electronic link between CDC and public
health practitioners.
It is distributed free and uses a toll free number to
connect to the CDC in Atlanta. It was originally
created to connect local, county, and state public
health officials to national databases. It is now
available to all public health practitioners. The data
available through CDC WONDER come from
the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer
Institute, the National Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health, the Census Bureau, etc.
Currently, CDC WONDER only runs on DOS based
machines. They plan to port CDC WONDER to other
platforms shortly. There will also be Internet access
sometime later this year.
According to the CDC documentation, user specified
tables can be created from the following data sets:
AIDS Microfiche Data Summary
AIDS Public Use
Mortality Data:
US Mortality by county, age, ICD code, year
Associated Morbidity
Comorbidity Multiple Cause of death data
ENGLAND AND WALES MORTALITY
CBA CEA Bibliography
NHIS PAP Smear Data
National Hospital Discharge Survey (Data elements
available not specified in the documentation)
NHIS Tobacco Use Data
SEER (Cancer surveillance data set for 10 sites,
combined to estimate
national rates for age-race-gender-year stratum)
Sexually Transmitted Disease Morbidity
US Census
One limit of the WONDER system for those outside
CDC is
that it has to be accessed by modem, as access over the
net is not yet available.
Access: email: [email protected]
This is not an automated email server, so just ask for
a user registration form for Wonder. Please be sure to
include a US Mail address.
Phone: 404-332-4569
You will be answered by Wonder User Support.
Request registration material.
fax: 404-488-7593
Send a note asking for registration material.
Please be sure to include a US Mail address.
The reason you cannot register automatically is the
requirement for a physical signature to access some of
the databases they provide.

Description:
Searches are based on specific topics. The BIRON
system prompts you to type in a topic for which you are
seeking data. Your term is matched against a list of
several thousand descriptive terms arranged in
associated groups. If an exact match is found, you are
told how many datasets have been indexed with the
matching term. Then you are offered other associated
terms which might assist in focussing your search. If
no exact match is found, lists of similarly spelled
words are offered for your selection and the process of
matching begins there. Some topics covered in the
catalog archive cover areas of social and economic
life. Areas of interest to the health community
include:
Agriculture and Rural Life
Child Development and Child Rearing
Education
Ethnic Minorities, Race Relations and Immigration
Government Structures, National Characteristics and
Policies
Health, Health Services and Medical Care
Population Studies and Censuses
Plant and Animal Distribution and Conservation
Religion
Social Structure and Social Stratification
