PASSAGE 1 : Welcoming The New Year
Last year Ricky and his friends wanted to do something

together, "Ten! Nine! Eight! Seven! Six! Five! Four! Three! Two! One!"

Dear Julious,
We received your letter yesterday. Father
read it and said that your English has improved.
He says it's all right for you to visit the zoo after the mid-year
examination. I'm sure you'll enjoy
your trip because you like animals.
Do be careful. Do not go too near the cages.
The animals may look tame, but they are dangerous when they are hungry
or angry. You should stand at least one metre away from the cages.
Do not feed the animals. Don't leave your
food or bag on the ground or bench. A monkey
may snatch it. During my last visit to the zoo, a monkey snatched
the ice cream from my hand.
Mother asks you to study hard for your examination,
but do not sleep too late.
I'm taking good care of your goldfish so don't worry.
I have a surprise for you when you come home next month. It's made
of wool. It will keep you warm. Try to guess what it is. Bye
and
best of luck in your exam!
Your loving sister,
Jovinia

French fries or potato chips, hamburgers, pizzas
and sandwiches are Western fast food. Fast
food is so called because the food is already prepared so we can buy
and eat it fast. It is popluar because it is tasty and served hot
and quickly. The restaurants that sell fast food are clean, modern
and comfortable, too.
However, we should not eat too much Western fast food that contains a lot of recycled oil and processed meat. It is not nutritious. Nutritious food contains carbohydrates, proteins and a lot of vitamins. We need to eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits to get enough vitamins.
There are many types of Malaysian fast food such
as nasi lemak, chicken rice, fried noodles and noodles served in soup.
These can easily be found at hawker stalls and food courts in shopping
malls. Malaysian fast foods are delicious and popular. They
are nutritious too because they contain plenty of fresh vegetables and
meat.

30 MARCH 1999.
Dear Akiyama,
Thank you for your letter,
postcards and photograph of your family. I am sending you
a photograph of my family, too.
The oldest person in my family is my grandfather.
He will be seventy years old next month.
He looks younger than my grandmother, doesn't he? My father is
quite thin. He looks fat in
the photograph because he is wearing a loose batik shirt.
I am standing next to my mother. The other
three boys are my brothers. My eldest brother
is seventeen years old. He is the tallest among the four of us.
His friends call him 'Mr Long
Bean'. I'm the youngest in the family, but I am taller than my
other two brothers. My sister is
twelve years old.
All my brothers and sister stay at the school hostel.
I feel lonely when they're not around.
However, we always have a great time together during the school holidays.
I have to stop now. I have a Mathematics test

Take care.
Yours sincerely,
