THE FIRST MEETING

PERSIKOL had met twice since its registration. The first meeting was held on the 1st. October 1997, on Wednesday, at 3 to 4.20 pm in the meeting room, at the psychiatric clinic, Hospital University Sains, Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, Malaysia

Summary of meeting
 

During the meeting the President had announced that "PERSIKOL" has been officially registered. At the start PERSIKOL will only be able to accept membership from the citizen of Kelantan Darulnaim.

Among the activities planned were the publication of pamphlets about psychiatric illnesses, holding a workshop and public forum.
 
Members that were present had also contributed suggestions on the activities that were considered beneficial to the psychiatric patients.

The suggestions given by members:

1.   To establish a “Revolving Fund”  to help patients in purchasing the medications which are not available at the HUSM.

2.   To publish newsletter and forms for members of PERSIKOL.  Regular “Newsletter Bulletin” (once every 4 months or appropriate) will be useful.

3.  The Mental Health Week 1998.
     Members were enthusiastic for the Mental Health Week in 1998.

SUMMARY OF MEETING

PERSIKOL's president expressed his appreciation to members during the meeting. He once again emphasized the objectives of the society, to ensure clarity among the members so that they can plan out a useful program for the society. Among the objectives are:-
 

 1.   Helping the psychiatric patients in the ward, in the clinic and in community.

 2.   Act as support group as well as giving complementary mental health activities besides those provided by the Ministry.
 
 3.   Also provide help and support to battered wives and single mothers who need counseling.

He also encouraged the publication of  “News letter”  to update members on the progress of the society.
 
 

During this meeting the new committee members were elected on majority vote of (3/4). Those who were selected are:

Suggestions made during the meeting:
 

1  Suggestion so that PERSIKOL helps patients to purchase medication with sponsored/subsidized prices.

The President suggested the following medications:
 
I) Risperidone
II) Fluvoxamine
III) Clopixol drop,

The medications can be sold to patients at a reduced price if compared to the prices at the local pharmacy. For example Fluvoxamine in the market cost RM 133.00 but PERSIKOL could provide patient the same medication at RM 61.80. For Risperidone it is sold at RM1.40 per 1 mg tablet in PERSIKOL, compared to RM 2.00 in the local pharmacy.
 
 

 2.  Forum / Workshop on Schizophrenia.

This suggestion were accepted with good response. Further planning will be discussed in the next committee members meeting.

 3.  Pamphlets / Brochure about psychiatric illnesses.

This was thought useful as a method for public education on psychiatric illnesses and the help available to them.
 

4.   Society's home/office.

This suggestion was accepted. However it probably need many sponsorships to establish the fund to buy/rent the site.

5.   To hold a funfare  .

This is for the purpose of collecting money for the society. The president himself had donated his electric type writer for PERSIKOL'S use.

 
6.    Home Page

It was hope that the members are willing to contribute to the web site for PERSIKOL. PERSIKOL'S own home page will ensure fast transfer of information or announcement to members who have internet facility. Members were encouraged to contribute their own write ups to be send to the web master so that PERSIKOL'S home page have varieties of contribution and write ups
