2: Ten of the centres responded to the question regarding the handling of new
or me-too drugs within their centre. If a trial was felt to be necessary
(i.e. controversial medications or me-too medications) most centres indicated
that it was overseen by Pharmacy and Therapeutics. Although a specific
policy was not in place at the centres, most of them evaluated these drugs
for a 6 month trial period, and in 1 case the trial may be extended to 1
year. During the trial period the medication was granted formulary status.
After the trial period, the results were analyzed to determine if it should
remain on formulary.
Prior to the drug being addressed by P&T, many centres indicated that they
have a non-formulary request form that physicians must fill out prior to
dispensing non-formulary or me-too drugs.
One centre indicated that physicians were allowed to occasionally
participate in manufactured-sponsored "informal trials" but only on the
approval of Pharmacy and if the dispensing was controlled by Pharmacy.

editor's note: In my experience, this product should be used cautiously.
Some patients have actually gone from one extreme to the other i.e. from
drooling to very, dry thick secretions and if on a respirator it may severly
compromise their airway.
