Sea Story or Comment : I am also a former snype, MM2 main control. I made the last WestPac cruise that greyhound made before decommisioning. We got to go to Australia, and rode out a Typhoon on the way back to San Diego. I remember that fantastic ship we could run 32 ++ knotts.

Sea Story or Comment : I went topside to empty the after- engine room
garbage can on the 00 to 04 watch. This was somewhere near Japan in 1955 and we
were in the middle of a raging storm. I stuck my head out the hatch for a
look and told MM2 Shaneyfelt that it was to rough out there. He said we
don't let a little thing like weather keep us from emptying our garbage. I took
the can up the ladder and steped out, waited for the ship to roll to the
starboard side then made a run for the rail. Just as I reached over the side
with the can a huge wave grabbed me and hung me over the rail head first then
picked me up again and washed me down the deck to the fantail. I managed to
make it back down to the engine room raging and cussing at everyone present.
A moral to this story? Sailors better be good swimmers!
