"LIDICE. Czechoslovakian mining village near Prague. Lidice was the scene
of a Nazi reprisal action. In 1941 Reinhard Heydrich was named Deputy Reich
Protector for Bohemia and Moravia and began a reign of terror against
civilians in the protectorate. Driven to desperation, Czech patriots on May
29, 1942, attempted to assassinate Heydrich. On the escape of the
assailants, Nazi authorities declared a state of emergency in the
protectorate. Heydrich died of his wounds on June 4, 1942. Six days later
the Nazis, alleging that the people of Lidice had aided the men who killed
Heydrich, took savage vengeance on the villagers. All the men and older
boys, numbering 172, were shot. The women were either killed or sent to
concentration camps, where many of them died. The children were taken off
to the camps or, in some cases, distributed to foster homes. The village
itself was systematically destroyed, and its name was erased from official
records. Nazi authorities, apparently oblvious to worldwide shock, admitted
the massacre."
