Scarlett O'Hara was perhaps the most coveted role in film history. Every and any actress would have given her life to have the coveted role, but which actress was quite right for the part? Several of the candidates included Lucille Ball, Paulette Goddard, Tallulah Bankhead, Jean Arthur, or Katharine Hepburn. But none of them seemed quite right for the role of the beautiful Southern Belle, Scarlett O'Hara. The actress playing Scarlett O'Hara needed to be strong willed, and able to play seemingly opposite parts at the same time. For instance, in the final scene, when Scarlett is crying to herself, you can still look into her eyes and see that she is made of steel and power, and although she is crying for her lost love, she will get him back. There is simply no doubt in the viewer's mind that Scarlett O'Hara will get Rhett back, because of who she is, and what she is. She is Scarlett O'Hara survivor. Not just any actress could play her. Not many actresses in their right minds would try. But there was one. There was one actress with the will, the beauty, the steel and force to play Scarlett O'Hara. This actress was the woman who's name will always be carved in history. This woman was Bette Davis. But Bette refused to act alongside Errol Flynn, whom she thought would be playing Rhett Butler. There was one more actress, with the beauty, will, and all of Scarlett's impeccable qualities, but this actress was unknown at the time. Vivien Leigh will forever be known as Scarlett O'Hara. With her catlike green eyes, and dazzling smile, Vivien was the perfect Scarlett O'Hara. And she wanted the role desperately. She dressed as a Southern Belle one day, just to see how she would look in the part. And of course she looked incredible, Vivien always looked incredible.
