Summary: Lolita

One may view this work as the defense by a crazed and delusional man, or really just half a man. He is on trial for the corruption of innocence, the defilement of purity. The voice of the testimony belongs to the dypsomaniac, Humbert Humbert, a name conjured up by the voice himself. He defends his villianous actions by revealing that he became seduced by the strumpet known as Lolita. However this creature brought into the light of the court was assembled from the mind of that sinless prey himself, Humbert Humbert. If one were to unmask Lolita, the girl Dolores Haze would shine through from the murky depths of that miasmal swamp which Humbert Humbert lead her into from reality. Defendant H. contends that he could not help what he did because that Lolita seduced him and preyed upon his already fragile ego, hurt by another callow harlot named Annabel. H. could not help but to marry the mother of this Lolita, then kill her and take the seductress upon a thrill ride across the expanse of purple mountains and waves of grain. Unfortunately the defendant H. does not adequately convince the jury of his defense, he allows slight glimpses of reality to sneak through the cracks of his sinking ship. Even the manifestation of his poshlost, Clare Quilty, that he attempts to sidetrack the jury with, fools those who are in attendance. In the end the defendant H. is punished for the raping of the butterfly with the common name Dolores Haze and the murder of her mother Charlotte. The eternal presence, a judge of the court (one may think of the court as being en banc), removes defendant H. from the chess board, handing down the verdict of what should happen to creatures of this nature.
