*N SYNC in the Millenium

Blast Magazine reported that Chris, Justin, JC, Joey and Lance are planning to heat up Hawaii with a two-night concert and party.

On December 30, 'N Sync kick off an exclusive 'N Sync concert and the next night the band plans to party into the new Millennium.

The band hasn't decided who will plan the party. If Chris Kirkpatrick is in charge of the party, he wants a Hawaiian luau that includes a roasting pig and hula dancers.

He also says he wants lucky party-goers can have the chance to dance with the boys as they've promised to give personal dancing lessons to anyone who asks.

But JC wants a laid-back party while Lance wants to surf.

Justin wants to play beach volleyball while Joey just wants everyone to get along and have a good time.

No matter who ends up planning the party, 'N Sync fans are sure to have a good time spending New Year's Eve '99 with the band.

Lance-A-Lot Fever

Teen Beat: What were you like when you were growing up-what kind of kid were you?

Lance: I was like a really crazy idiot when I was little. I was very hyper, that's all I loved to do was play and play. I was just a little comedian-everyone was like, "Your gonna grow up to be a comedian." And then I really matured and now I'm laid back. I totally changed.

Teen Beat: Did you have a pet growing up?

Lance: My first pet was Goldie and he was a cocker spaniel. I was in first grade.

Teen Beat: Can you remember something that you did that got you in a lot of trouble?

Lance: I used to get in so much trouble everyday-just stupid stuff like going out into the woods and not coming back for hours and my family having to call the police.

Teen Beat: Did you ever get Detention?

Lance: Yes, but not for being bad. I got detention for being late because im late to everything.

Teen Beat: Describe your room.

Lance: In Mississippi, I have a house. My room is very clean since I have only slept there twice. I have a bunk bed, but they're not bunk-they're like two separate beds. It's all wooden, everything is like wooden. Beanie Babies Galore!

Teen Beat: What's your favorite one?

Lance: "Toughie." He is a dog. I like all the dogs. I hated beanie babies at first, then they kept on giving them to us and I was like, 'OK they're cool.' And now I collect them.

Teen Beat: You didn't like them at first?

Lance: NO, I hated them, I hated the idea of how stupid they were. And then fans would give us Beanie Babies, and then they were like all cool, real cute.

Teen Beat: How many do you have?

Lance: I have like 60.

Teen Beat: Are you looking for any?

Lance: Yeah, plenty of them. I was looking for Ally-the alligator. And there's a frog. I just got the Princess Diana Bear and the Valentine Bear-any of the bears are cool. The brown bears are the hardest to find. Someone gave me the official membership kit where you get the pictures of all of them and I started checking them off. I have all the McDonalds' ones too. Half of them are at home and the rest are at the apartment here (in Orlando).

My parents are coming in tonight and they're going to take them back.

Teen Beat: How would you describe your personality?

Lance: Im just happy. I just try to be happy and friendly, stay positive, and not be mad at anything.

Teen Beat: Do you have a motto?

Lance: I just like to live everyday like its your last. Just live it up.

Teen Beat: What's your worst habit?

Lance: I say, "um" a lot. I always say "um."

Teen Beat: How would you describe your style?

Lance: It differs, I go from sporty to dressing up. Suits are fun but I like stylish dress up. Parasuco is my favorite designer. He's Canadian. It's out of Toronto and Montreal. He's spreading out to New York and Los Angeles. He specializes in stretch material, so all his jeans are kind of stretchy and tight. It's really cool. JC loves Parasuco too, they all love Parasuco, but me and JC are into it the most.

Teen Beat: What's your happiest memory?

Lance: There have been so many happy memories in the last two years. My sister got married a year ago and that was a very happy moment. Finding out we went to number two here was just incredible. Presenting the Bee Gees with their life time achievement award was a highlight so, there's all kind off stuff. Everyday is a different experience.

Love Hearts

'N Sync have more smoochy songs tucked up their sleeves that we've had hot dinners, but when it comes down to nitty gritty, do they practice what they preach? TV Hits has the answers...

TV HITS:First up, do you love being in love?

JC: Yes, I love being in love - and if you don't love it then you're not in love!

Joey: Er, yeah! That's why it's called love.

Chris: Joey loves his blow up...er, never mind!

Lance: I like it, but at the same time, I don't...

Chris: (butting in)...because you can't have all the girls you want anymore, heh heh!

Lance: No, 'cos you have to devote time and it's an effort...Plus I don't have time.

TV Hits:Can you define being in love?

Lance: It's when you're with someone you totally trust, who you're best friends with and you want to spend the rest of your life with.

JC: I agree. But you also have to care about their life more than your own.

Lance: (jokingly) Oh, I don't know about that!

Chris: (while placing TV Hits stickers all over his head) While I'm thinking, can we play "Who Am I?" No? But it's fun! Oh OK, I'll answer the question! It's a warm and fuzzy feeling inside that hits you like a ton of bricks!

TV Hits: Do you get embarrassed watching rude (sex) scenes on TV with your parents?

Justin: With things like that, you just have to laugh.

Lance: I squirm unitl it's over. I saw Something About Mary with my parents at it was weird!

JC: I just pretend I'm not watching it and close my eyes. But if it's a really rude scene...

Joey: Oh, me and my dad are there rooting them on, heh heh!

TV Hits:Do you watch rude channels in hotels?

Justin: Well, you have to pay for that stuff!

Chris: But you can watch it for five seconds before they catch you - not that I know that!

JC: We don't watch it as you have to pay, but if it was on regular TV it'd be a different story!

TV Hits:Have you ever cheated on a girlfriend?

Joey: Yes, I have. I was seeing one girl called Jeanny who lived in Staten Island, and another who lived in New York, but I lost out big time in the end - Jeanny dumped me 'cos she found out, and the other girl didn't find out but dumped me anyway.

Justin: I've never done anything like that and I wouldn't like to, either.

TV Hits:Were you scared of your first kiss?

Lance: I had butterflies 'cos it was when I played Spin the Bottle. After three goes you have to French Kiss - luckily I finished on two!

Chris: I was beaten up for my first kiss. We were playing kiss tag, and after she kissed me she punched me. I guess I didn't know what I was doing, heh heh!

Joey: I was sweating and nervous as I was pushed into a closet with a girl. We kissed, but it was like those in the movies - you know, when you don't use your tongue!

TV Hits:If you had to liken your snogging style to an animal, which would it be?

Chris: A lizard (everyone bursts out laughing). But why's everyone laughing? (looking bemused) I don't get it!

Joey: A panther.

Chris: Yeah, right - more like an Orang-utan!

Lance: I'd be a Boa Constrictor - long, big, and exotic!

JC: No, that's something else (more roars of laughter). I'd say a fish - very open and wet. That's a good choice as there are kissing fish.

Justin: A dog 'cos I use my tongue a lot!

TV Hits:What do you call a snog in America?

Joey: We'd say 'make out.'

Chris: Or French Kiss.

JC: No, we'd say a deep kiss.

Justin: I've never said that!

Chris: OK, I know - second base.

Justin: First base is kissing - period. Second base is, as you say, snogging, and third base is, well...(hmm, next question!)

TV Hits:What's the most embarrassing lurve situation you've been in?

Joey: There was one girl, Sarah, who I was dating and she was a really bad kisser. One time, I bent down to kiss her goodbye and ended up getting my whole entire face licked - in front of the whole school. It was awful.

Chris: I've kissed girls with bad breath and I've had to tell them. Well, if you like someone and they have dragon breath,it's your duty!

Justin: Yes - that's the same for me, too.

TV Hits:Who gets the most attention out of the band?

JC: Well, Justin gets a lot of girls.

Justin: (looking embarrassed) No I don't - we all get an equal amount of attention. But it's really hard to meet girls now as we're never sure of their reasons for wanting a date.

Chris: Yeah - if she asks you for autographs for her friends, you know it's dodgy!

TV Hits:Has your heart ever been broken?

Chris: I have - and I could tell you who it was, but it'd start a big rumour!

Joey: Yes, my first love broke my heart - and every girl since then has, too!

Justin: I've had my heart broken, and my theory is that I'm too nice from the beginning.

TV Hits:Finally, what is a total no-no if you're in love?

Joey: Picking your nose and eating it, heh heh!

Chris: I'd say lying - you have to be honest.

JC: Yes - you should never ruin the trust.

Lance: I'd say you should never cheat on her.

Justin: Yes, you shouldn't lie or be unfaithful. If they love you, they'll accept everything else.

Chris: (Still playing with TV Hits stickers) Can we play "Who Am I?" now? Yes? Great!

from TV Hits June 1999

Florida Fellas

With their last single reaching the top 5 here in the UK, it looks like *N SYNC have finally made it ...

Q. So exactly how massive are you lot over in America?

Chris:Well, we've got two albums that are due to go platinum which isn't bad I guess! And our new single is number three right now.

JC: at the moment, we're doing a transitional tour of the States. We're playing in some venues to 3,000 people and some to 17,000-it's great!

Q. So who's bigger-you or BSB?

Chris: I think it's riding pretty level-it's like we're both hopping backwards and forwards in the charts between number one and number two! And it seems whenever you turn the TV on there's one or the other of us there!

Q.Do your fans hate each other?

Justin: No- that's what's really cool about it all. I know that in England the Boyzone fans hate the BSB fans, but it's different here in America. I think maybe because they started before us their fans are a bit younger. Our market ranges from teenagers on up, and we also have lots of guys come to the shows-I think that's because we did college gig first.

Lance: you never get that in England, but in America there isn't that "boy band" image-well not yet. So we lucked out being the first ones, 'cos people think of us just as a group, not as a boyband.

Q. How important is it to you to make it in England?

Lance: It's important to us to make it everywhere. The UK opens up a lot of territories and a lot of people watch the Uk to see what's happening on the music scene there.

Joey: Loads of bands are hitting the US now that started in the UK.

Q. How are British and American fans different?

Joey: the British fans eat different food in the morning. They eat poridge and stuff. But at the end of the day, fans are fans you know-they scream!

Q. What makes your music different from the other bands?

JC: It's solid. We feel more raw and more live. There's lots of a capella in it and we're not afriad to try anything!

Q. What don't you like in England?

Joey: The money! I'm not spening any more money there-we always spend a fortune! It's like $25 to the pound-it's absolutely crazy y'know?!

Q. What about the food?

Chris: I love poridge. And tea!

Lance: I like British fish n' chips.

Q. So have you all got girlfriends yet?

Chris: no, we're still looking. But it'd weird cos once you start to get platinums, they all start calling!

Justin: I mean we do date-I guess I've got about 20 on the go at the moment! (laughing), but I haven't got anybody serious!

Q.Have you had any other offers like modelling?

Justin: We have actually. We might be doing a Spice World type movie! Actually we're doing a lot of TV shows like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Clueless. Also Tristar are doing a movie with us which was meant to be released this July 4, but we can't make the datem so we'll probably do it next year some time.

Chris: What we'd really like to do is our own TV show, like a Wayne's World type thing where we can do something different every day. Saturday Night Live meets Wayne's World meets *N SYNC on the road-yeah! maybe we'll do something like that! Everybody's got a movie or a TV show idea and we're reading a lot of stuff-it'll be fun!

JC: but at the end of the day, music is our job at the moment, so we don't want anything that takes us way from that!

(pictures: on the left Chris and Justin sitting on a couch staring at each other grinning. Chris is wearing a navy blue K-Swiss shirt and blue jeans and red sneakrrs. His hair is pulled back in a ponytail. Justin is wearing a red sweater, light blue jeans and red sneakers. On the right hand side: Lance, JC and Joey smiling happily for the camera sitting on another couch. Lance is all in dark blue, JC has on a red sweater and blue jeans, Joey has on a navy blue Tommy Hillfigger sweatshirt and cargo pants with his S necklace and hat. )

*N love with.... *N SYNC

Can Joey, Lance, Justin, Chris and JC keep their cool when it comes to falling in lurve?

Q.You sing about it lads, but what is love exactly?

Lance: hmmm.... love is something special between you and anyone who is really special to you, like your family for example. Love is when you totally know someone, trust them and you'd do anything for them.

Joey: Our new album has some brilliant ballads about love. I think we explain what it is through our songs!

Q. How easily do you tell someone you love her?

JC: I may fall in love easily but I'm quite slow to say the words. It's not my style to say "I love you" on the second date.

Justin: With a girl it's better to really know her before you blurt it out-you may scare her away! I tell my family I love them all the time though, that's different.

Q. have you ever cried over a girl?

JC: YES! I can control it but sometimes I've been really emotional burst out crying. It shouldn't be embarssing for a man to cry-when your heart is broken you can't help it!

Lance: I've never cried over a girl. I've never been in love. I'm still too young!

Q. Would you give up your career for a girl?

Chris: no! I don't think the kind of girl I'd love would ever ask me to give up my career for her. if she loves me, she's got to love me for who I am and not ask me to quit my entire life for her.

Q.Do any of you remember your first snog (kiss)?

Lance: oh yes! I was only 9 years old and it came as a bit of a surprise.

JC: I remember mine very well because she knew what she wanted! She pushed me on the ground and she began to kiss me so much that I thought that there were at least 6 girls kissing me at the same time!

Q.What first attracts you to a girl?

JC:I always go for the lips. I love a nice pair of kissable lips!

Justin:A girl's eyes tell me a lot. I always look at her eyes and smile first.

Q.Now that you're hugely famous pop stars is it easy to go down the disco and think "Hurrah I can snog any girl I like!"?

Chris: I wouldn't do that. You know a lot of girls come to see our shows or put our pictures in their bedroom. We have no right to take advantage the situation. it would be insane!

Lance: I've never met anybody i really liked in a disco!

JC: I prefer to meet somebody in another kind of situation, like the store or in the street. i prefer to follow my destiny!

*N SYNC's Steps To Success

It's FAR too early in the moring, but despite having flown in  to London from Florida the night before, *N SYNC, America's hottest pop group (theyve got TWO albums in the top ten) are really hyper! While the lads may be a brand new pop phenomenon here in Blighty , they've been hard at it for three years stateside and fill huge stadiums! Time for L&K to find out the story of their success and if they're so darn busy do they ever get the chance for a snogging sesh? Justin, Chris, JC, Lance and Joey reveal all. . .

(picture: JC in a 70's style blue checkered shirt, Justin in a short-sleeved baby blue t-shirt, Chris wearing glasses and dark braids in a ponytail wearing a light brown/beige checkered shirt, Joey wearing a blue button down short, open over a white t-shirt, Lance in a beige checkered shirt.) All the pictures in the artcile are from the same shoot. They have a little one at the top, a big one different pose and little pics of the guys at the bottom. Chris sitting on thje floor lookign serious, Joey looking off in the distance holding his pager, Jc on the floor contemplating somehing, Lance in the distance, Justin sitting down, Justin breakdancing, JC sitting smiling at the camera

Q. Where did you lot meet and become singing buddies?

JC: It was a fluke how I started in show business. I landed a part in MMC, but to be honest, I only went along to the audition to get out of going to school! The weird thing is, if I hadn't skipped school that day I;d have never met Justin and *N SYNC might never have happened! Thank goodness I decided to audition!

Justin: When JC joined the show we got chattin' and relaized that we both wanted to form a band. I also mentioned it to Chris, who's an old buddy of mine, who was working at Universal with Joey

Lance: I met the others a little later on. I didn't even realize I was musical until I was about 14. I was really into singing and some friends encouraged me to join a local choir, which is how the others spotted me.

Q. Do you remember having your first photo session?

(an embarassed silence)

Joey: erm in the early days, we had some bad photos taken. We just didn't know what we were doing!

Chris: We'd be standing there with these really cheesy grins.

Justin:Once we did a swimming pool shoot and the photographer said that we should just act like we were go swimming by the pool- then he was like "right, all satnd together. tight together!" We looked really weird but he was already taking loads of pictures! They have turned up everywhere!

JC: we were naive back then. The pictures aren't that bad-but we do look pretty cheesy!

Q. There's so many great pop bands out there. Why do you reckon you're so popular?

Joey: 'Cos *N SYNC are just crazy and our songs are great too!

Justin:And our fans are very loyal. We're not here just to take the money and run like some bands.

Q. You spend loads of time together, do you get on each other's nerves?

Chris: no, we've known each other a long time. In fact, we're like brothers. We always take care of each other. We're all on the same level and we totally respect each other

Justin: it may be hard to believe but we are best friends, if one of us needs some space then we give it to them, but we love hanging out together.

Q. But now you're HUUGGE all over the world and big in Blighty-do you find any time for luuuurve?

Chris: Well if one of us falls in love he'll find the time.

Lance: yeah but its very hard to find time. If it happens-it happens-but ti's not easy. We're just so busy!

Chris: At the moment the only free time we have, we spend playing video games. It helps us switch off from everything and relax for awile.

Justin: It's hard but I'm convinced that it's possible to build something with somebody no matter how busy you are. If you really want to put the effort in to a relationship you will, it's just a question of organizing your time in the right way!

Q. You must go on the odd date though surely!

JC: oh yeah! We haven't got a no girlfriends agreement, like some bands do. We're allowed to date! It's just inconvienent to have a full time girlfriend at the moment.

Lance: We do have some time for dating though!

Q. You're reaching pop superstardom, which star would you like to have a bit of romancin' with?

Chris: Well we're not really famous enough to start dating supermodels and famous people just yet!

Joey: dating someone famous would be harder than dating someone who's not in the public eye. Normal dating's hard enough!

Lance: Erm I wouldn't say no to Cameron Diaz ....

Justin: me neither, or Janet jackson. [the other lads nod in agreement!]

JC: ooh! Or that girl from The Mask of Zorro-Catherine Zeta Jones .. . She's very nice!

Q. Would you go out with a fan?

JC: Yeah why not?! If she were interested in the same things as me and if she liked our music we'd probably get on pretty well!

Joey: It depends. Now we're more mature and we know what to do- what not to do-for that matter. *N SYNC know how to behave!

L&K: you've been touring with B*Witched, so do you all get along OK?

Lance: B*Witched are just great-they're the sweetest girls! At first you don't get much time to spend with the other bands 'cause of each others hectic schedueles, but then we ran into each other backstage and spent about 15 minutes chatting with each other.

When was the first time you met B*Witched?

JC: the first time we met I think I burst into their dressing room. I did knock though to make sure they were decent!

Will you see each other again?

Justin: we probably will 'cause B*Wicthed are going to be in the UK at the same time as us for two weeks and then can show us around. We're also really good friends with All Saints and they said they can't wait to see us and take us out!

Are you excited about spening more time in the UK?

Chris: yeah! We only stayed for a real short time last time. I spent so much money on clothes!!

Is it odd being unknown in the UK when you're so huge in the US?

Lance: it's nice cos it's quite relaxing. I soemtimes feel we're on vacation cos we cna go wherever we want.

Does having a bodyguard get irritatating?

Joey: I've had a bodyguard for over two years now. It was a bit strange at first. You get used to it though and the good thing is that we get along really well.

Do you have to wear a disguise back home in the States?

Lance: I usually wear a hat cos I never wear hats with the band so fans don't usually recognize me. If I really wanna go undercover, I wear a long flowing wig! But I don't think it suits me at all!

How do you cope with sitting on a tour bus for hours and hours?

Joey: it's not boring at all cause there are five of us guys on the bus, then the five more big guys-the bodyguards! On a long trip, we have to be careful we don't eat too much sugar because it makes us run around a lot!

How can you run around on a bus?

Joey: well it's not as big as the Spice Girls' bus in Spice World but it is quite large. have you ever played I-spy? Just the other day Justin and I started playing it without realizing what we were doing. After about ten minutes we went "why are we doing this?"

How do you chill out?

JC: Mostly we sort out other interests like running businesses and things like that. Chris even runs a clothing company!

Who's the best breakdancer?

Chris: we all do breakdancing. Justin's pretty good but I guess JC's easily the best.

Have any of you ever injured yourselves?

Justin: I broke my thumb twice but that's about it.

Is there any time for romance on the high speed world of *N SYNC?

Lance: not much. Actually when we were in LA for a whole week we did date! We wouldn't be very good long-term boyfriends cos we'd never see our girlfriends!

Which *N SYNC-ers are more romantic than others?

JC: I think we're all romantic, but I guess we're a bit out of practice!

Have people tried to link you and B*Witched romantically?

Lance: Actually no, and it really surprised me cos I was expecting it! People were spreading rumors that Justin and Britney Spears were seeing each other, but of course they weren't!

*N Your Face

[picture: 1999 -Justin wearing a gray turtleneck sweater, Lance in a football jersey, Chris in a hillfigger t-shirt and sheer blue jacket. His hair is ina ponytail and he is wearing his glasses, Joey is weairng a football jersey as well and JC is wearing a yellow turtkleneck sweater and jeans]

It gives their vital stats under each guy : name, birthdate, birthplace, nicknames except it says Lance's real name is James lansten and his nickname isLlance Bass! It tells you how to pronunce JC's last name (Shaz-ay)

and then it gives an interesting fact:

Justin: Blue-eyes Justin is a big fan of basketball, but don't try talking to him in the morning. "He takes a few hours to wake up" says Lance.

Lance: Lance loves joking and the tiny country of Lichstenstein. He's also managing a pair of country music artists!

Chris: Chris is a computer games addict, but when he's not working on his play station, he relaxes by spinning records. He's jumpy when you first meet him but soon settles down.

JC: JC loves sleep more than anything! "I can sleep on the floor, standing up, . . .I've even fallen asleep in the shower!" needless to say, his favorite place is in his bed.

Joey: He collects Superman memorabilia-his favorite item is an old lunch box! JC also tells us that Joey makes "noises from every orfice-he even makes a noise when he smiles."

Boybands

"We didn't even know what a boyband was til we came to the UK" explains Justin. "The term doesn't really exist in America. When someone says you're a 'boyband' there's this stereotype-you're manufactured and you'd rather sell products than sing."

"That's why bands get defensive when you call them a boyband," chips in Chris. "They'll say 'we're a lad band.' We make a joke out of it. -we say we're a dude band!"

Music

"Americans like their music to be genuine." says Justin. "They like to be entertained, but they can ALWAYS spot when you're not genuine. If you're not, you're not gonna sell many records in the long run."

Fans

Lance reckons British fans are "the bomb." "They're so dedicated. They'll follow you right across London just to say hi. A couple of British fans even went to Germany ro see our show!"

"And there's no language barrier, and that's a BIG thing," reckons Chris. "It means you don't have to talk slowly. In fact, sometimes if you DON'T talk fast they don't understand you. Over here it's so cold that you have to talk fast to keep your circulation going."

Audiences

"The audiences in the UK are different," adds Joey. "In America, you get the screaming girls, but you also get boyfriends and adults coming. "

"Don't NOT come because we're a 'boyband' "Chris advises British blokes. "American guys are clever because they know they'll be loads of girls at our shows. Come along and if you like it, you like it. If you don't, you can always meet a girl."

Shopping

"London's really trendy" Gushes Chris. "It always has very agressive styles that we always catch on to. But it's so expensive! You come with $1000 US and you end up with about eight pounds!"

Luckily Lance has a cunning plan:

"The next time we come to the UK, we're gonna being some clothes over with us and make money by selling them from the back of our truck!"

It's not all bad though. "I love your fish and chips!" shouts JC. "I hate to say it-but the french fries are so much better here than America."

At this point *N SYNC start arguing over the merits of British and American chips-expect for Joey who tries to sell us his trainers (sneakers) ! "You can have them for 50 pounds!" He cries as Smash Hits makes a hasty exit!

*N SYNC *N YA FACE

[picture: 1999- the guys in blue holding and throwing red ribbon]

Question: How big are *N SYNC in America?

Answer: Huge ... and then some? As the guys burst back into the UK music scene for a second stab at chart deomination, TOTP magazine are there to witness the full blast!

Justin Randall Timberlake: Aged 18 and still the "cute one" of the group although he totally gets embarassed by this label. You'll never see him without his diamond ring (a Christmas present), and the bracelet his mom bought when the album went platinum.

Joey Anthony Fatone Jr. Aged 22 and still amd about everythign Superman. "i bought my Superman pendant last year, a 1966 Superman wallet and some Swedish Superman comics."

Lance "Lansten" Bass Aged 19 and still a self-confessed work-a-holic. "I manage two country singers , Meredith Edwards and Jack Defeo.' His real name is James.

JC Chasez aged 22 and still afraid of needles. "The other guys got B12 injections in their butts but I refused. The needle was thick as a matchstick!"

Chris Kirkpatrick aged 27 and still the craziest member of *N SYNC. He has a penchant for strange hairods. "Shane from Boyzone and I had a good laugh when we met and AJ and I always joke about who had dreds first."

In 1998 *N SYNC (taken from the last letters of their names) stormed the US Billboard charts, travelled across the globe more times than a snippet of Spice gossip and are now hot on the heels of their mates, the BSBs, in the American heart-throb stakes. It's been over a year since we last sat down for a decent chat with the guys so it's time to get well and truly in sync. (ho!)

Q. What's changed for you in the past 12 months?

JC: we've been living on the road so we miss normal things like houses, dogs, stuff people take for granted. Even driving cars. Now when we get behind the wheel, we're like road dangerous!

Lance: I just miss going out without being noticed. It's got to the mobbing stage back home.

Q. We've heard that your fans range in age from young girls to older women.

Joey: there's this one middle aged woman who says she's my aunt. She calls the office every day and says she wants to get to know me.

Lance: There's this one lady from Orlando who goes on the internet and says she's my mom! She's foul and cusses all over the place: "He better get his wah-wah over here." It's pretty funny, I guess.

Q. B*Witched our cover girls supported you on tour. What were your firts impressions of the girls?

Joey: They're very sweet.

JC: We loved them. They've got great attitudes.

Lance: (in a strange Irish-type accent) Dibidoiheebeedeebee. We took the mickey out of their accents.

Chris: but we take the mickey out of our own accents too.

Q. Any snog (kissing) stories to confess?

Lance: Every night!

Justin: NO! We didn't get to know them that well.

Joey: Mostly we only met up at the venues because we both had very busy schedueles, but Lance tried to smuggle himself on to their tour bus. He tried to pass as a package!

TOTP: Careful! you'll get the rumor mill going!

Chris: I like rumors. They're kinda cool.

JC: Except the other day when I had people calling up saying "Yo! We heard you guys were in a car accident!" People say we're dating girls we ain't dating, we're engaged, we've gotten girls pregnant, wer're on drugs. It hacks me off.

Q. What would your ideal rumors be?

Chris: That I was caught in bed a couple of times with Gwen Stefani.

JC: You can definately spread a rumor about me and Janet Jackson.

Lance: *N SYNC and Shania Twain are doing a duet together and we're going on tour for a year and we're gonna hang out every day.

Joey: You should start a rumor about us doing a movie.

Q. Do you fancy that?

Lance: We are doing a movie.

Justin: Just for fun.

Lance: It'll probbaly happen this year sometime and there's gonna be a space element in it. That's all we know just yet.

Q. What have you been shopping for lately?

JC: I bought a keyboard last year and I'm still excited about it.

Joey: my metallic blue Acura SOX. It's a SUV. (utility vehicle)

Lance: I'm about to buy my first house, back in Orlando. It's going to be right near the water so I'm gonna get loads of jet-skis.

JC: I just got a computer and I'm learning how to be Mr. Computer Guy!

Justin: We all got laptops recently and I went online yesterday. I checked out the travel sites. Chris went crazy on the home shopping network.

Chris: (without the slighest hint of embarassment) I bought a sword.

Lance: the *N SYNC sites written by the fans are the best. One girl adapted Lord of the Flies with us as the main characters.

Q. What's the *N SYNC phrase of the moment?

Lance: Two K.

Justin: you hold two fingers up when you say "two" and then turn them on the side when you say "K". It means 2,000 like the year 2000.

JC: My phrase is "free James brown."

Lance: YMA! that's another one!

Joey: it's Amy backwards.

Q.Erm who's Amy?

Joey: (with a suspiciously cheeky smile) No one. We were just thinking about the name Amy and thought "I wonder what it sounds like backwards?"

Justin: (in a bad whisper, pointing at Joey and Lance) nuts!

Yep that's *N SYNC. NUTS! Plus mad-crazy and majorly energetic-despite having flown in just hours before our shoot, the guys broke down into several impromptu dance routines. Don't say we didn't warn you!

Back 'N SYNC

[picture: *N SYNC in white jumpsuits c. 1997 -They are standing on rocks at the beach.]

What's the story?

In America, *N SYNC are as massive as the BSB-except *N SYNC reached that stage in half the time. The R'n'B quintet shot to fame almost overnight after appearing on a live Disney Channel show BSB had turned down. But let's back up a bit . . .'N SYNC were formed after Chris Kirkpatrick 27, decided to take his coffee shop singign career one step further and form a band. He contacted Justin Timberlake, 17, who knew Joshua "JC" Chasez , 22, from his days working on TV. Together with Joey Fatone, 21, who worked with Chris at Universal Studios, the four started working on an act built around a capella harmonies. Bass vocalist Lance Bass, 21 [why they think he's 21 is beyound me!], (nickname Lansten), joined after he was recommended by a vocal coach and it was then that JustiN, ChrisS, JoeY, LansteN and JC discovered they were 'N SYNC! The lads have garced more American teen magazine covers in the last year than any other artist, and now they look set to try and conquer Britain. But what are they really like? Time to find out . .

JC

Q. You've tried your luck in the UK before-what's different this time?

JC: We were here two years ago, but it didn't happen for us, so we went home where it just exploded. We're a lot more confident now and I think that helps. But we're still the same guys. We haven't changed.

Q. Is it important that you make it here?

JC: yeah, the UK is one of the world's trend-setters, and whatever you guys get into the rest of the world will follow. You set the tone for what everyone else does.

Q. Just how big are you in the US?

JC: We're doing OK. We sell out arena tours, we have multi-million selling records, and we get invited to all the best parties! So I guess we're pretty big.

Q. How well do you get on with the BSB?

JC:Our paths cross all the time. We do awards shows together and we tend to see one another when we're abroad. We all pretty much live in Orlando so we're always bumping into oen another. It's cool.

Q. We heard a rumor that you all might record a record together?

JC: We haven't talked about it. But we have ended up on songs together for charity.

Q. Do you have a girlfriend?

JC: We all date but we don't have time for anything serious. We're on the road for over 300 days a year. But dating's fun cos I get to see girls from all over the world.

Lance

Q. How did you get big in the US?

Lance: we did this Disney Channel special, and it's like EVERYONE saw it! We got massive over night. I've never seen anything like it. We can't walk down the street without being screamed at. It's crazy.

Q.What do you think of British girl bands?

Lance: we're really good friends with All Saints and we've heard of B*Witched. There are so many pop acts here, whereas in America there are only two or three of us. It will be fun seeing where we fit in..

Q. Do you have a girlfriend?

L: No. I'm dating but it's difficult to make it serious. I've been dating the same person for quite awhile and yet it still can't get serious. I mean, I can only see someone for one day a month man!

Justin

Q. We hear you're really tired today Justin.

Justin: Yeah, this job makes me so tired. For the last week I think I've only had like three hours sleep a night. Early mornings and late nights are taking their toll.

Q.Are you surprised by your US success?

Justin: We're bigger than I ever dreamed it would be possible to get! I can't walk down the street on my own now.I get recognized everywhere I go.

Q. Are you pleased that people are comparing you to the BSB less often?

Justin: Yeah, we don't get that much anymore. We're *N SYNC and they're the BSB and that's that. We're a little more R n' B in our sound and do more a capella stuff. In the end we are totally different people.

Q. Do you have a girlfriend or are you dating too?

Justin:I don't have a specific girl but I'm dating now, and the list just keeps growing and growing! I don't really have time for anything serious, but I know I'll meet the right girl when the time is right.

Chris

Q. Being the oldest in the band do you take on the role of the big boss?

Chris:Not, not at all. We're not like that. *N SYNC are a democracy. Everyone has an equal say and we vote on anything major.

Q. Are the fans different in England than they are in the US?

Chris: Not really. The fans are pretty much the same and they're really supportive. Actually I'll tell you where it's really crazy-Spain! They're mad there! Once I was doing a routine with my arm out and this girl threw her bra and it landed on my arm! Everyone saw! I was so embarassed!

Q. How similar are you to the BSB?

Chris:We're different personalities and our vocals are different. When we play live we put a lot of energy into our show, whereas they tend to do more ballads. We're both good at what we do.

Q.Do you have a girlfirend?

Chris: I'm not married or anything but I am pretty serious about someone. We'll see what happens though.

Joey

Q.Does it get boring performing IWYB for the millionth time?

Joey: Not at all. It's our baby and it's been good to us. It's done well everywhere it's been released and I think that will happen over here.

Q.How do you deal with your massive success at home?

Joey: we can't walk down the street without people recognizing us, but it's nto a problem-in fact, if I'm honest, I really quite like it! I've had people trying to dig the dirt too, but nothing's come out yet.

Q.Do you think you'll be as big over in England now?

Joey: The response has been good, which is encouraging. We can't wait for the single and the album to come out, because that'll allow us to come over here and tour, and then you'll see what we're all about.

Do you have time for a girlfriend?

Joey:  No I don't. To be honest with you, I'm still looking. I like British girls, so you never know what might happen while I'm over here in England!

From Big! UK

Oh boy! The World of *N SYNC

*Before they released IWYB in the US the band consulted famous psychic Uri Gellar who told them it would be a smash hit-and it was!

*The lads love responding to e-mails and chat with their fans in their very own personal chat room. Catch them on the internet at http://www.nsync.com

*Justin once broke his thumb on stage while performing a wild dance routine.

*One of the band's proudest moment was presenting wrinkly disco crooners the BeeGees with a lifetime achivement award.

*They have no idea what girl power is but we reckon the Spice Girls could kick their butts!
