Have I Seen This Movie: Yes
And What Did I Think?: Star Trek IV is the most successful of all the Trek movies out there because it was lighthearted and funny. Following the more sombre Star Trek III, this Trek brought in some humor by traveling back to current day Earth. However, to me this did not seem like Star Trek. There were no fabulous special effects, starship battles, phaser fights, aliens, or even the Enterprise for that matter. Perhaps thats why it made the most money, because people who weren't Star Trek fans could go see this movie and not know what the heck was going on. There are some great scenes here between Kirk and Spock. I found it amusing to hear Spock try to use "colorful metaphors" and his love (or lack thereof) of Italian food. I think they should have had more scenes of the crew trying to make their way through the streets of San Francisco though. The plot was kind of cheesy though... go back in time to get a couple of humpback whales. I think they should have thought of a better reason then that. Well, Star Trek IV & even V was a break from the darker Treks of the series, and it still is good fun to watch, but if you need to see real Star Trek, then try II or First Contact.
