Austin tells Carrie that Detective Ross has no more news on Sami. Later, Austin sees Jamie and asks her if she’s heard from Sami, a question she manages to dodge.

Carrie asks Shawn if he knows how Marlena is as John wouldn’t let her see her. He advises her to concenrate on her wedding and not to worry. When Austin returns, Shawn calls Caroline and tells her that Carrie is worrying. They agree that she can’t find out the truth. However, Carrie hears Shawn’s end of the conversation and decides to go and see Marlena again.

At the loft, John can’t believe that God would let the demon use Isabella against him. Kristen arrives, and John tells her he’s dealing with his pain as well as he can. Francis tells him it may not be good enough. the demon will stop at nothing to prevent them from successfully completing the exorcism. What if Isabella was just the beginning? John is certain he can handle anything the demon throws his way, but Francis suggests it might be best for everyone if he excuses himself from the rest of the exorcism.

Caroline prays for John and also for Carrie and Austin’s wedding. Marlena asks her to put her sunglasses on, pre-empting Carrie’s arrival. Caroline departs the bedroom and when Carrie does arrive, she goes upstairs to the bedroom and feels a chill. She is alarmed to see Marlena in such a state, but Marlena reassures Carrie that she is fine, despite the presence of the IV drip and heart monitor. Marlena tells Carrie that there won’t be a wedding because Austin is seeing another woman.

Meanwhile, Sami has arrived back in Salem. She finds Jamie, who is delighted to see her. She fails again to tell Sami about Carrie and Austin’s engagement as Sami sets off immediately to find Austin. Wearing a mask, she looks about Salem Place until she sees Austin. She moves to go and speak to him.

Alice thinks Laura might be able to help Gina figure out whether she’s Hope or not. The trio come upon the fun scene of Billie and Bo in a cream pie fight. Alice tells Gina she can’t go on living in limbo - she has to find out who she really is. Gina and Laura go to have a chat. Laura asks Gina if she’s sure what she’s feeling for Bo is love. She says she is certain it is, but she can’t be sure if here memories are real. Laura suggests they set up regular therapy sessions - they won’t solve the problem today. Laura reminds Gina that even if she is Hope, that doesn’t mean she’ll be with Bo. Gina realises this but is determined to find out who she really is nevertheless.

Bo and Billie go into a closed shop which Bo has managed to appropriate the key to and make love.

Jack finds Laura at Salem Place and tells her that for once he and Jennifer were focused on Abby without fighting or disagreeing, and it reminded him of some of the love they shared. However, he realises he has no choice but to accept that Jennifer is really in love with Peter. He tells Laura that though he may give up trying to get Jennifer back, he’s not going to give up trying to get Peter away from his wife and daughter. He ultimately announces he’s going away for a few days. Laura wonders if it could really be true - has Jennifer pushed Jack out of her life for good? Before he leaves, Jack goes by Shawn’s stand and buys the puzzle box as a gift for Abby, and comes across Gina, who asks if he’s bought anything at the sale. He tells her he has bought a gift for Abby, but little does she know that it is the puzzle box he’s purchased.

Meanwhile, Laura wonders whether she really has a chance with Jack. And if so, what, then, of her relationship with Jennifer?

Jennifer and Abby arrive at the Horton cabin only to find that Jack is there also.

Jennifer is annoyed to find Jack at the cabin. Jack reassures Jennifer that he had no idea that she was coming as wll and agrees to leave. However, the engine on the boat has blown and Abby is keen for him to stay. Jennifer ultimately agrees. Jack promises she won’t regret her decision. Later, she sees that Abby is enjoying herself and tells Jack she’s glad he stayed for Abby’s sake.

Carrie is upset by Marlena’s accusations and runs out. She gets back to Salem Place only to find lipstick on Austin’s cheek (it is Billie’s). She decides Marlena was right and runs off. He is quick to follow.

The demon is ecstatic and laughs heartily that the trick worked. Caroline storms in and demands to know what she’s up to.

Stefano and Celeste pay Tony a visit at the mansion. Stefano implores Tony to use his influence with Kristen and John to convince them that he must see Marlena. Tony tells him that John will not allow him to see Marlena, and Stefano then calls the penthouse, where Caroline receives the call and tells him she has nothing to say to him. Tony gets the phone and apologises to Caroline. Tony then goes off to the penthouse. Celeste tells Stefano she picked up an unsettling feeling from Tony before he left, and comments how ironic it is that the powerful Stefano is forced to stand by and watch. Stefano, however, has other plans and intends to take action immediately.

Kristen and Francis continue to implore John to walk away from the exorcism. John realises that that would be exactly what the demon wants, and though Francis agrees that this is highly possible, four lives will be affected by his decision - his, Marlena’s, Belle’s and Brady’s. He goes away to make his decision, and in Salem Place, comes upon Carrie and Austin. They explain their situation to him and John’s decision is made. He tells Carrie that Austin is right - the Marlena she spoke to is not the Marlena they know and love. She is possessed by a demon. He goes on to tell them that if they want to help, they should keep it quiet. He also advises that they do not postpone the wedding as love, along with prayer, is a very powerful force against evil. Having made his decision, John returns to Marlena’s. He won’t let the demon spread evil anymore. The demon is annoyed that the Isabella ruse did not succeed in putting John off completely. While he, Francis and Kristen go for a bite to eat, Tony arrives and Caroline asks him if he can watch Marlena while she goes to the hospital for more IV bags (her supply of spares having suddenly disappeared thanks to the demon). Caroline warns Tony to be careful as the demon is very wily.

At Johnny Angel’s, John tells Kristen and Francis that he can’t help but think the demon has set his sights on another target. At the penthouse, Marlena tells Tony that John and Kristen are lovers. He rejects this, but Marlena tells him to look into her eyes for the truth. He does so, and sees John and Kristen making love.

Austin once again attempts to tell Carrie about the girl he slept with. Once again, she doesn’t want to know. They plan to go to St Luke’s to pray together. Elsewhere, Sami is annoyed when she finally learns that Austin and Carrie are back together, more in love than ever, living together and getting married. Jamie implores her to accept all this and put Austin behind her, but instead, Sami intends to return to Seattle, promising to return when she comes up with a plan to break Austin and her sister up.

In Salem Place, Laura reassues Peter that it’s perfectly normal for Jennifer to go away on her own. During the conversation, Peter spots Daniel. He comes over and Laura invites Peter and Alice to join her and Daniel for supper. While Laura and Alice take a wander, Peter and Daniel have their usual exchange of words.

Alice realises that Laura invited her and Peter to supper because she doesn’t want to be alone with Daniel anymore. Laura tells her that now Jack has told her he’s accepted that he’ll never get Jennifer back, she thinks she has a chance with him. She goes on to tell Alice that though it is a difficult situation, she doesn’t see how they won’t be able to work things out. Alice then suggests that she originally went to Jack on the rebound from Daniel.

At the cabin, Abby has a nightmare about water, and Jack regrets not being there to teach her how to swim. Jennifer agrees to let Jack teach Abby to swim. They enjoy the day together being a family.

Elsewhere, Stefano and Celeste have met up with John, Francis and Kristen and Stefano demands that John tells him about Marlena’s condition. He insists they bring in experts. Later, Celeste tells Stefano that Marlena’s not the only one at risk - anyone who has a dark side is in danger.

At the penthouse, Tony refuses to believe the demon’s lies. Marlena tells him that Kristen’s good influence will soon fade and he will be the demon’s. Caroline returns with the supplies and finds Tony in a sort of trance. She tells him she’s been gone for more than an hour, but it feels like a few minutes to him. Upon her return, Kristen tells Tony she doesn’t like him being here because he’s not used to being around the demon. He reassures her that he’s fine, but agrees to leave when John reassures him that he’ll make sure Kristen gets home safely. Elsewhere, Celeste gets a chill when she realises that not only Marlena but anyone with a dark side is in danger from the demon. Later, when she and Stefano visit Tony, she notices he’s acting strangely. Looking in the mirror, Tony sees an image of John and Kristen making love, which the demon implores him to believe is true. After Tony sees them out (and tells them not to bother returning) Celeste warns Stefano that he must stay away from Marlena as she is dangerous.

Back at the exorcism, the medical equipment shows that Marlena is getting weaker so they take a break. John can’t help but think he’s missing something important.

At the Horton house, Laura is unable to make love to Daniel as she keeps fantasising about Jack. Peter comes over as Daniel is leaving and Laura tells him that she’s unsure of her feelings for Daniel. Peter calls Jennifer and tells her he’s missing her.

With the cleaning up after the rummage sale over unexpectedly early, Alice and Gina walk in the park. Alice insists Gina finds the puzzlebox. If Gina can prove she’s Hope, then it’s up to Bo to make a decision. When they come upon Abe and Lexie in the park, Gina asks Abe to put her back on the pawn shop case and he agrees. Celeste, concealed nearby, hears all this and recalls taking the box from John’s loft. When Gina later comes across Celeste and asks her for her help finding her identity, Celeste tells her there has been too much pain already and that she must get on with the life she has now. When Gina goes, Celeste laments that she knows what it’s like to go back into the lives of people who have moved on - it only causes pain. Lexie then finds Celeste and is upset with her unwillingness to help. Abe implores Celeste to go to Lexie, as they are planning to start a family and she needs her aunt now more than ever. She tells Abe that she does love Lexie, but if she were to tell her the truth, then she would not want to have children.

The puzzlebox is with Jack on Smith Island. He is about to throw it in the fire because he cannot open it, but Jennifer stops him as it intrigues her. She ponders the box as Jack goes for a walk, but he falls into a pit. They remove all their major items of clothing to make a sort of rope for him to climb out with. They then suffer from a rash caused by poison ivy and apply soothing lotion to each other’s bodies.

Sure Gina won’t be home for a while as she is cleaning up after the rummage sale, Bo plans a romantic surprise for Billie. He has appropriated a massage table. Gina arrives home amidst all this and Bo is not pleased to hear that she has gone over his head to be reassigned to the pawn shop case. Billie recalls the box belonged to Tom and wants to help Gina find the box. Bo resigns himself to the fact that he will be unable to talk Billie out of helping Gina (who knows that it would cause Billie too much pain if she knew the truth behind her wanting to find the box so badly). In fact, Billie wants to put something on Jennifer and Jack’s TV show to find the box.

Cast (in alphabetical order):
John Aniston (Victor Kiriakis), Christie Clark (Carrie Brady), Bryan Dattilo (Lucas Roberts), Eileen Davidson (Kristen DiMera), Ivan G’Vera (Ivan Marais), Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans), Drake Hogestyn (John Black), Peggy McCay (Caroline Brady), Frank Parker (Shawn Brady), Miriam Parrish (Jamie Caldwell), Austin Peck (Austin Reed), Thaao Penghlis (Tony DiMera), Louise Sorel (Vivian Alamain)

Lucas is annoyed when Victor tells Vivian that she’s got the job full-time. He confronts her and asks her if she’s come up with a plan to break up Carrie and Austin. Later at the pub, Jamie tells him there’s no way he’ll manage to stop the wedding. He is delighted, however, to hear that Sami plans on returning. She’s just what he needs to get Carrie and Austin apart. When he returns to the Kiriakis mansion, he overhears Vivian telling Ivan that she’ll make Victor fall in love with her again. He confronts her again: he just knows she’ll stop Carrie from marrying Austin now.

Tony continues to be disturbed by the demon’s images of John and Kristen. He tries very hard to shake his uneasiness. As a gesture of extreme kindness, Tony arranges for all of the flowers for Carrie and Austin’s wedding to be brought in from New York (all the ones in Salem are dead due to the demon’s heatwave). That afternoon, they go high up into the hills to write their wedding vows.

John declares that he must try to get through to Marlena, as she still exists, even though the demon has taken possession of her soul. He asks Marlena to send a sign that she can hear him. At first, she appears to hear John, but it is (altogether now...) ONE OF THE DEMON’S TRICKS. The demon announces that Marlena is gone, and that Carrie and Austin won’t get married because there are people in Salem working very hard to ensure they won’t. (This last bit is true, actually.) Determined to make sure the wedding does go ahead, John heads to the church with Kristen to pray for a sign that Marlena is still there (something about the stifling atmosphere in Marlena’s room weakening the strength of their prayer). While they’re doing this, Tony drops by Marlena’s with fresh flowers (which die when he and Caroline go up to see Marlena). While Caroline is out of the room, the demon starts working his evil in Tony’s mind...
