"We have said everything that has to be said about this, Michael Horton!" - Laura

"I really hope they catch that horrible man. I knew John didn’t do it!" - Jennifer

Jack tells Laura that he might as well move on with his life now that Jennifer has married Peter. She couldn’t agree more. Mike calls Laura to get her to sign Tony’s death certificate. He is incredulous that she still hopes for a relationship with Jack, who arrives with the news that everyone is stuck in Aremid as the roads have been shut until an arrest is made.

Abe calls Peter to tell him the state police have arrived. Peter claims that John Black will be in jail by the end of the day.

Marlena is unsettled when Stefano says that whoever shot Tony must pay. He vows to find his son’s killer. Peter vows that he will not rest until he proves that John Black murdered Tony.

John tells Abe he has a gun just like the murder weapon. A check has been run on the serial numbers. He tells Abe and Marlena that Kristen is having doubts about his innocence.

Bo tells Jennifer that Jude attacked Hope. He also tells her that they will catch him, and that for the first time in years he felt that it was just him and Hope - he didn’t even think of Billie. Jennifer tells him this reaction is perfectly natural and it doesn’t mean that he’s forgotten Billie. He doesn’t agree though, and tells her he feels as if he’s sort of betrayed Billie. Meanwhile, Hope tells Jack about Jude’s attack and Bo’s reaction to it. Later, they wonder who Jude could have been meeting in Aremid. It must have been someone with a lot of power and money. It is this that leads them to put forward Jude as another suspect in Tony’s murder. Peter begins to get nervous as Bo and Hope tell them all that Jude was in town to meet someone from Salem who backs his illegal businesses and that they think it was Tony. Kristen finds this hard to believe. Peter hopes they don’t find him or he could lose Jennifer forever. Indeed, Jennifer hopes that Kristen didn’t feel deceived.

In the light of this new breakthrough, Kristen goes to see Tony’s body and says she supposed she desperately needed to believe that he was a good man. She apologises for doubting John. It seems to be all over, except that Hope recalls that Tony kept saying John’s name and "put down the gun". Peter tells Lieutenant Schafer that Jude is a red herring and that John is the real killer.

Jude plans to go to Peter for help. He finds out that there is a bulletin out for him for murdering Tony. As there are road blocks up, there’s no way he’ll escape. He calls Peter’s phone, but he is busy and Jennifer answers it...

The Parrot Man torments Celeste with his insane riddles. He tells her that he can tell she is afraid of secrets. Lexie arrives and Celeste tells her that she and Abe must go home. Lexie asks the Parrot Man what he knows about Celeste. He tells her that she’s been in Aremid before and that she upset the Lady in White, who now only cries when someone dies. Celeste tells Lexie she knows nothing about her birth parents and Lexie considers that the reason she wants her out of Aremid is because perhaps her parents lived there. She sets to work in the phone book, but to no avail, and asks Celeste about the Lady in White. This also yields no answers. Meanwhile, the Parrot Man finds gravestones with the names of Lexie’s birth parents on them.

Peter panics when he realises how close Jennifer came to finding out about his connection with Jude. He meets Jude at an abandoned lumber mill. Jude tells him that Hope stabbed him in the eye. He also tells him he didn’t kill Tony - he didn’t even know him. He was in town because of Peter, but Peter tells him no one can ever find out about their connection and that he wants him gone. He gives him some money and tells him that if he sees or hears from him again, he’s dead.

Kristen realises how guilty she feels as she can have everything she ever wanted now Tony’s dead. She and John decide they want to get married as soon as possible.

Peter admits to Abe that he doesn’t want to believe that John shot Tony, but the evidence points to it being true. Indeed, it is not long before Abe learns that John’s gun is not in his loft and that the murder weapon belongs to him.

Peter advises the police that they should shoot first if they see Jude St Clair. However, he is relieved to learn that Jude appears to be long gone.

Jack learns that he is to remain in Aremid to cover the murder for the show. Peter is none too impressed. Jennifer considers quitting the show altogether. She can’t even bear to look at Jack and when she does, all she sees is him in bed with her mother. Peter tells her he doesn’t see any reason why she and her mother won’t be able to get past this, and she agrees. After all, the affair is in the past. She is therefore unimpressed to find them hugging outside the pub.

Bo, Hope and Shawn-Douglas go on a picnic, and the child tells his parents that he hasn’t had this much fun since they were all on Smith Island. Later, Bo is alarmed when he cannot find Hope.

Abe tells John that his gun wasn’t at the loft and that the gun that killed Tony belongs to him. John swears again that he did not kill Tony and says that someone must have broken into the loft and stolen the gun. Further forensic evidence is taken to see if the skin under Tony’s nails is John’s. Jack tells John that he won’t rest until he clears his name. Kristen tells John she still believes in him and that he’s the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with. She wants to prove the point by making love to John but he refuses to take advantage of her emotional state. In any case, Abe interrupts and tells them that the blood and skin samples from under Tony’s nails match John’s.

The Lady in White reads Tony’s diary and cries at what he planned for "Johnny".

Kristen tells Peter she believes that Jude St Clair shot Tony and that she intends to marry John. She asks Stefano to support her belief, but he’s not sure he can, having heard Tony’s dying words. Peter tries to convince Kristen that John and Marlena are much more than close friends.

Bo finds Hope, who has hurt her foot. He asks her if she wants to do as Billie asked and explore their feelings. However, she doesn’t want to get hurt again and refuses. She sees he is still wearing Billie’s wedding ring, and he is unable to guarantee that he won’t go back to her. She refuses to be some emotional experiment because he has confused feelings.

Jennifer tells Laura that Jack is to blame for their affair, but Laura tells her that she initiated the embrace just now. She tells her that she was in love with Jack even after she knew who he was. Jennifer is angry and tells her mother she made a fool out of her and that she can never forgive her for the trust she betrayed. She wanted Jack to get on with his life, but not with her own mother. Peter tells John he’s angry that he’s playing on Kristen’s emotions to keep her onside. Abe arrives with the results of the finger print test.

N.B. - This episode marks the last regular appearance of Thaao Penghlis as Tony DiMera. He returned for one episode on the 2nd February, 1996, playing Tony’s ghost.

"Go back to your grave! Leave me alone!" - Celeste

The Lady in White follows Celeste, who realises she has to take care of something else to prevent Lexie from finding out the truth about her parents. She goes to the Aremid Historical Society and tears a page out of a large, leatherbound book. The Lady in White appears, and Celeste runs from the building, terrified. The Lady in White sees that a page has been torn out of the book. Celeste runs into Lexie and Maggie, who are hunting something to donate to the hospital’s annual benefit. They wonder what has frightened her so much, but they do not find anything inside. Lexie is upset when Celeste tells her she was researching the Blake family, as she has refused to help her learn about her own family. Lexie and Maggie eventually decide that Celeste is probably mad. Lexie finds the torn page in the book and wonders who would do such a thing to a beautiful book such as it is. Meanwhile, Celeste burns the page and then finds the graves of Lexie’s birth parents - John Prescott Warfield and Priscilla Hopkin Ashcroft. She does her best to obscure them as the Lady in White watches from a distance. Lexie tells Maggie that she somehow feels at home in or connected to Aremid.

Jack tells Bo that the reason Hope turned down his offer was because she’s afraid of being hurt. He suggests that he remove his wedding ring. Bo is outraged at the suggestion, but Jack recommends that he doesn’t let the chance slip away. Meanwhile, Hope tells Jennifer that she won’t give Bo another chance while he’s still wearing the ring, but Jennifer tells her their love is too important for them to push aside because she’s afraid of getting hurt.

Shawn-Douglas doesn’t want to go back to Salem without his parents. Hope gets him to write a letter to Santa Claus telling him what he wants for Christmas. He asks for one thing - he wants his family to be back together. Hope is heartbroken as it’s the one thing she can’t give him. However, Bo thinks they can give it to him and he removes his wedding ring.

Abe tells John that his were the only prints on the gun. John realises there would have been gunpowder residue on his hands if he fired the gun so Abe calls the state police to get the results of the tests that Bo ran after the shooting. They learn that John did have residue on his hands and that he therefore must have fired a gun recently.

Kristen attempts to persuade Peter not to go to the press. She is unsuccessful and tells him she will fight him and clear John’s name. She goes to Jennifer and asks her to work with Jack to make sure that John gets fair treatment from the press. Though still very angry with Jack, she agrees. She tells Jack that Peter is just torn up about his brother’s death. Jack hopes that whoever the Attorney-General names to prosecute the case is a little more impartial than Peter. Meanwhile, Peter has called the Attorney-General and called in a favour to be named the prosecutor for the case.

N.B. - Unusually, Lisa Rinna features as Billie Reed in flashback sequences as Bo decides whether or not to remove his wedding ring. The use of clips from past episodes featuring a departed cast member this long (just over two months) after their final episode is generally unheard of, and one can only assume that permission was sought from Rinna for their use.
