Carrie and Austin’s wedding has been postponed to give more time to find Sami. While Austin and Jonah go to prepare the bachelor festivities and get fitted for their tuxedos, Carrie is fitted for her dress at Titan. Lucas comes in and is irate.

Austin tells Jonah he wishes he could be honest with Carrie about Sami, but Jonah advises him to forget it. Later, they bring gifts that have arrived at the apartment to Titan, including ones from Kimberley, Bo and Billie and one from Seattle. Carrie and Austin open this one first - it is champagne and goblets which are exactly the same as ones Roman and Marlena had. Carrie wonders who would have known this, and recalls that Roman and Marlena’s shattered not long before their relationship did. They go to drink the champagne and when they make a toast, their goblets shatter too.

Meanwhile, Vivian has sent a P.D. to Seattle to track down Sami. While at the pub, she receives word that the P.D. has found the building in which Sami is living. She sends Ivan home to get the wine out of the fridge and tells an annoyed Lucas not to worry - Sami will be found by the time the day is over. Indeed, she receives another call confirming that th P.D. has found her and Vivian tells him not to let her out of his sight.

In Seattle, Sami tells Ashley she’s not going home until she’s sure she can have Austin. Ashely is furious that Sami has spent all her hard-earned money on gifts (the goblets). Sami tells her that the gift was a message that Austin belongs to her. The P.D. then knocks on the door and Sami hides.

The demon continues to torment Tony. When he calls Marlena’s, Kristen doesn’t say "I love you" and he gets his gun out when Caroline tells him that Kristen and John have gone to get something to eat together.

Celeste sets about warning Stefano about the tarot’s death prediction. She finds John and Kristen at the pub and tells them of her feeling of foreboding about Marlena, adding that it would do them well not to ignore them - something terrible will take place tonight. She becomes exasperated with their refusal to believe her and sets off to find Stefano before the prophecy comes true. John tells Kristen that she’s been very generous throughout this whole ordeal. He takes her hand and tells her he admires her. Tony sees this from outside the pub and misinterprets it.

Caroline hopes for a quiet night, just as Stefano arrives outside disguised as the delivery man with medical supplies. She lets him in and tells the man to let himself out as she has to go and check on Francis (who is resting). Instead he goes upstairs and hides in the cupboard outside Marlena’s room until Caroline and Francis go downstairs for tea.

On the way back to Marlena’s Kristen tells John she has a feeling that Celeste was right. Tony watches them from a short distance. The demon pushes him to shoot John. Upstairs, Stefano enters Marlena’s bedroom and unties her. She transforms into the hideous beast and Stefano is suitably shocked and terrified.

To take her mind off the shattered goblets, Austin buys Carrie some new glasses to symbolise their love.

The P.D. enters Ashley’s flat and searches for Sami. He tells her he knows she’s hiding something and he’s not leaving until he finds it. Eventually, he calls Vivian and tells her he’s lost Sami. He gives Ashley lots of money and tells her to call him if she comes back. When he leaves, she divides the cash and gives half to Sami.

Vivian reassures Lucas there is still plenty of time to stop the wedding. She outlines a new plan to get Sami back to Salem. They will bring out the issue of Bella Magazine covering Carrie and Austin’s wedding a month earlier and feature Carrie in her wedding gear on the cover. When Sami sees it, she will come racing back to Salem to spill the beans. They arrange an immediate photo shoot for the cover photo, and Lucas reminds Vivian what will happen if her plan fails.

Celeste manages to prevent Tony from shooting John. He refuses tp give her the gun, and she is appalled to think what he might have done with it. She goes off to find Stefano in the hope that maybe he can get through to Tony. In the meantime, Tony questions his own actions and is confused - he doesn’t want to hurt anyone.

Stefano tells the demon that the power of love will defeat him and tells him to return Marlena to him. The beast transforms back into Marlena and, while Francis, Mike and Caroline try to get into the room, she and Stefano struggle until ultimately Stefano is thrown off the balcony. Down below, John and Kristen see the body hit the ground and are shocked to realise who it is. Francis, Mike and Caroline manage to get the bedroom door open and discover the room has been trashed and Marlena is unconscious. Francis deduces that there must have been some sort of struggle, but the demon isn’t letting on. By now, Mike has been paged downstairs and John asks him if Marlena knows anything. Abe has arrived by now and wants to know exactly what is wrong with Marlena. They all go to the hospital to find that a passenger train has been derailed and almost thirty people were injured. The hospital is teeming and busy and it may be some time before Stefano can get the attention he requires. Abe wants to question Marlena, but John (who thinks Marlena pushed him off the balcony) persuades him to hold off a while longer. John heads back to the apartment and Abe also has to return to the scene as the D.A. has been informed. Stefano goes into arrest as Kristen calls home and leaves a message with Charles for Tony.

John fills Caroline in on events and questions the demon. He concludes that the demon pushed Stefano off the balcony so Marlena would have to go to jail and the exorcism would be unable to continue.

Celeste returns to Tony in her hotel room, having been unsuccessful in her search for Stefano. They hear about his accident on the radio. They rush to the hospital and see Kristen and John (who has returned to fill Kristen in on what’s going on at the apartment) together and the demon makes Tony mad at this.

"You are your father’s son. You have the stain of his blood in your veins. You can never escape that, Tony. You simply can’t. And you need to live your life in the kingdom of darkness, just like Stefano, and just like me!"

                                                                                    - the demon

Abe finds that it looks like Stefano was pushed and Pat Hamilton arrives on the scene determined to put Marlena in jail. The demon hopes she is quick about it. As Abe tells Pat that Marlena is sick and confined to bed, they spot her out on the terrace. The demon is pleased that this appearance should move things along swiftly. They head upstairs, and Francis tells them that Marlena isn’t up to questioning and it would be fruitless to do so anyway. Pat’s patience is wearing thin by now. Abe takes Caroline aside and asks her what Francis is doing there and why they’re being so secretive. She doesn’t want to tell him without John, though, and Abe reminds her that Pat won’t let Marlena slip through her fingers again.

Celeste finds out that Stefano’s condition is critical and suggests to Tony that they go the chapel and pray for him. Tony finds himself unable to and he doesn’t know why. A nurse delivers a message to him that Kristen is in the O.R. lounge and Celeste encourages him to go and see her. Tony hopes he can control himself.

Kristen feels it’s almost like a conspiracy to make sure that Stefano dies. She tells Mike she wants him to operate on him. There are no surgeons available, and Lexie and Tony both encourage Mike to operate. He is left with no choice but to agree when it looks like they might lose him. The demon is annoyed that Mike is operating and makes the lights in the operating theatre go out. John asks Lexie to take him down to see the back-up generator, which they’re having trouble getting fired up. An hysterical Celeste is having to be calmed down by now. Kristen and John see the generator and pray, hoping that good should start it up again if evil shut it down. Their prayers seem to work, despite the demon’s best efforts to stop them. Lexie speaks to Celeste and asks her why she’s praying for Stefano, having turned her back on her. Celeste tries to tell her there is more to Stefano, but Lexie can’t get past the fact that he’s hurt a lot of people she loves.

After the judge has been on the phone and it becomes clear that Pat has just cause to question Marlena, Tony arrives at the apartment and reports back on events at the hospital. He asks Francis to help them and Francis tells Tony that he must pray with them, an idea he is not initially comfortable with. He ultimately hopes, however, that their problems will be solved with prayer. He later goes upstairs to see Marlena, and the demon tells him that he has all the answers to the questions he’s been asking himself. Tony calls him a liar and the demon retorts that even the best liar of all time sometimes stoops to the truth. Tony leaves without memory of any of this.

Pat arrives at the hospital to monitor the progress of Stefano’s surgery. If Stefano dies, then Marlena will be charged with murder in the first degree.

Austin and Carrie are called to the clinic as there is a problem with their blood tests. They dread to think there may be a problem with their HIV tests. Carrie tells Austin that if either of the them is HIV positive, it’s not his fault (but it plainly is). He tells her he can’t remember whether or not he used protection when he had sex with the other girl. Ultimately, however, it turns out that Carrie is slightly anaemic. Some iron supplements are prescribed and they get their marriage license. They vow never to take their health for granted again. Carrie suggests they help other people who didn’t get such great news as a way of celebrating their love (or something) and they volunteer to help at the clinic, and decide to return again tomorrow night to help more and also to run an article on HIV in the magazine.

Kristian Alfonso (Gina/Hope), Nick Benedict (Curtis Reed), Tanya Boyd (Celeste), Eric Christmas (Father Francis), Roark Critchlow (Mike Horton), Eileen Davidson (Kristen DiMera), Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans), Drake Hogestyn (John Black), Renee Jones (Lexie Carver), Robert Kelker-Kelly (Bo Brady), Thyme Lewis (Jonah Carver), Catherine MacNeal (Pat Hamilton), Peggy McCay (Caroline Brady), Thaao Penghlis (Tony DiMera), James Reynolds (Abe Carver), Lisa Rinna (Billie Brady)

It becomes clear that Pat and Abe will have to be told about Marlena’s possession, but the news is considered to be ludicrous, and when Pat finds Marlena ties to the bed, she tries to arrest everybody involved for unlawful detainment and physical abuse. However, John manages to prove himself right when he exposes the demon by holding a crucifix to Marlena’s skin, which it burns. Marlena is sedated and restrained again and Abe and Pat agree to keep the situation under wraps. Father Francis later collapses when he is unable to take his medication, the demon having put it out of his reach.

Bo is called to a drug bust, and while he’s gone Billie dreams that Curtis pays her a visit and tells her that Gina is Hope and that Bo is with her as he speaks, going so far as to tell Billie the exact address they’re together at. She wakes up and makes for the address.

Gina inadvertently interrupts Bo’s bust, and Bo must convince the drug dealers she’s his girlfriend so his cover isn’t blown. He is forced to kiss her to prove the point, and Billie arrives in time to see this (but not the dealers they’re doing it to convince).

Lexie tells Jonah about Celeste being her Aunt Frankie and also about the letter she burned. Jonah encourages her to uncover the mystery on her own by digging into her family’s past. Later, he reconsiders that perhaps the past is better left where it can’t hurt anybody, but Lexie is determined to discover the secret that Celeste is hiding.

Tony passes of an encounter with the ghost of Curtis Reed as a sick joke on his father’s part and heads to the hospital, where he is reassured by Celeste that Stefano loves him and would have no reason to do such a thing. When Stefano wakes, he does not recognise either of them.

Billie complicates the bust further when she storms over to confront Bo and Gina. All three are tied up by the dealers, but Bo and Gina create a ruse and are able to escape their bonds and capture the criminals. Billie is shaken by how well Bo and Gina work together, and Bo tells her she must get her insecurities under control as they nearly got her killed. Meanwhile, Gina is determined to prove she is Hope. Later, when they are all at home, Billie confronts Gina and accuses her of still having deep feelings for Bo.

Stefano is unable to remember anything at all. Celeste hopes the amnesia is only temporary, and Tony thinks he might be faking it. Celeste tries to convince Abe and Lexie that Stefano was trying to help Marlena rather than hurt her. When Mike brings in Stefano’s belongings, they find a bible amongst them, proving that he had no intention of harming Marlena. It also serves to prove to Celeste exactly how much he loved Marlena, and she is jealous of this, having loved him for so long herself and having kept his secret for all these years. She also goes on to say that the secret must never come out.

The unconscious Father Francis is discovered and an ambulance is called. The demon rejoices: even if he lives, Francis will be too weak to go on with the exorcism and it will be over.

At the hospital, Tony sees John hugging Kristen to comfort her about Father Francis. Kristen spots him and Tony tells her about Stefano’s memory loss. John and Kristen head back to Marlena’s to continue with the exorcism. This feeds Tony’s jealousy further, and when he hears Abe and Lexie discussing Marlena’s accusations that John and Kristen are lovers, he is enraged.

The exorcism restarts, and the demon, determined to use John’s love for Marlena against him, reminds him of the passion he and Marlena shared, before making Marlena’s clothes suddenly fly off her body.
