Peter pulls a gun on Daniel outside Jennifer’s house. Inside, Jennifer is annoyed when she realises that Jack was meeting with Daniel regarding Peter. They hear a gunshot outside, where they find Peter who explains that someone was trying to break in. When Peter and Jennifer go back inside Jack finds a matchbook from the Salem Inn, where Daniel is staying. It has fresh blood on it and Jack confronts Peter with it inside. He accuses Peter of shooting Daniel.

Mike, John and Kristen take Marlena’s body to the hospital. John recommends that Kristen should go home and take comfort from Tony. However, she cannot get the demon’s words out of her mind and does indeed find that her birth control pills are just sugar pills.

Tony attempts to get out of the cellar. Charles eventually releases him and Curtis advises him to go and find Kristen. To this end, he goes to Marlena’s where Caroline tells him that Marlena died. When he returns home, Kristen confronts him about the birth control pills. After initially dodging the question, he admits the truth to a furious Kristen.

"He’s been shot! I know it!" - Jack

In order to settle the matter, Jennifer suggests that she, Peter and Jack all go to the Salem Inn to talk to Daniel. There is no answer when they knock on his door and when the security guard opens it for them, they find the room empty. They learn he checked out a short while ago, and also that he was definitely not wounded. Unsatisfied, Jack digs a little further and pays big bucks to find out that it wasn’t Daniel who checked out.

Under pressure from Billie, Bo tells Gina that he and Billie don’t want her spending time around Shawn-Douglas anymore. Though clearly angry with the request, she agrees and goes to return Jack’s photographs to him. Billie’s conscience, in the meantime, plays havoc with her mind.

Kristen storms out on Tony and goes to the loft where she tells John what happened. Tony soon arrives and begs her to give their marriage another chance. After further arguing, Kristen tells him to leave. When he does, John encourages Kristen to go home and talk to him, but she’s having none of this. She stays in John’s guest room, where she takes her wedding ring off her finger. John goes to the morgue, to see Marlena just one last time.

Vivian gets home from a night out dancing with Victor. Ivan tells her that Lucas has been trying to reach her all night. He warns her not to keep ignoring Lucas, and when she is fantasising about her future with Victor, Lucas barges in and forces her to catch the next flight to Seattle. Victor is taken aback by her sudden departure as he was looking forward to taking her up to the Titan lodge.

Sami tells Ashley that when she can get out of the hospital, she’s heading back to Salem. Ashley agrees to help her escape, but a nurse comes in and administers a strong tranquiliser. She learns that the man whose car she stole is pressing charges. Ashley says she must call her family so they can post bail. Vivian and Ivan arrive at the hospital and are shocked to learn that Sami will be going to jail when she is released.

"She didn’t tell me she was taking those pills - the hypocrisy of it all!" - Tony

Tony tells Celeste that he’s lost Kristen and she urges him to got to her and do whatever he must to save his marriage. He must fight to hold onto his good side as there is still evil in Salem. Later Charles reports that Kristen is staying at the loft.

The residents of Salem gather at the pub after hearing about Marlena’s death. Unfortunately, the press have gotten hold of the fact that Marlena was possessed. A prayer vigil for Marlena is to be held at the church tonight.

John continues to believe that he failed Marlena and is even reduced to considering at one point that he might be responsible for the possession in the first place by having an affair with her. Kristen must talk him out of leaving town. At the hospital, Father Francis regains consciousness and asks for John - he needs to speak to him immediately. John gets the message and goes to the hospital, where he tells Francis that he failed to save Marlena’s soul. Francis tells him that it’s possible things aren’t as they seem - the devil is the master of deception.

Celeste goes to see Stefano in the hospital and is annoyed to find that even without his memory, he is rather taken with Marlena’s image on the cover of the newspaper. She is perplexed that even in death, Marlena calls out to him. Later, Lexie sees Celeste hovering outside the pub and tells Jonah that she thinks the letter from her parents contained something important from the past. Later, Lexie invites Celeste to join them inside the pub. She doesn’t think she’d be welcome, and when Lexie recalls Celeste advising her to leave Salem, Celeste tells her it was because she knew there was evil here. She affirms that the evil is still present. Lexie vows to find out what was in the letter on her own. Later, Caroline goes outside for some fresh air and wonders why there is still a heatwave in Salem if the demon has gone.

Tony goes to loft and asks Kristen for her forgiveness and tells her that he’ll do whatever it takes to save their marriage. However, Kristen realises that Tony must have been able to see to know she was taking the pills and demands to know when he really regained his sight. She is enraged further by this lie and tells him the marriage is now very definitely over. Tony goes to see Stefano, who is sleeping, and laments that he’s the only person who can help him get Kristen back and he’s got amnesia. Meanwhile, Kristen visits Francis who is also sleeping and prays for God to give John strength, to show him the way and to fill his heart with hope.

"Got you, priest!" - the demon

Bo mistakes Billie’s uneasiness for sadness about Marlena’s death, but Billie had not heard the news about Marlena and is very shocked. Alice calls and invites them to the prayer vigil at St Luke’s. Everyone is meeting at her house beforehand. Bo goes on to tell Billie that Marlena was actually possessed and that the demon was responsible for all the strange goings-on in Salem.

John pulls Marlena’s body out of the drawer and is convinced that she is dead and that Father Francis was wrong. The lights begin to flicker on and off. It turns out to be simply trouble with the generator. John chides himself for not letting go and closes the drawer. As he leaves, we hear Marlena - she’s not dead. She’s trapped and she can’t hold on much longer...

Peter shows Jennifer some pictures of Aremid while Jack is delivered a packege which he claims contains the proof that Peter killed Daniel. He finds that Daniel’s credit card bills show he hasn’t paid for a ticket out of salem, but this means nothing to Jennifer and Peter. Jennifer makes Jack promise not to bring up the subject of Daniel at the prayer vigil as they are there to mourn, not to cause a scene. Jack gathers up Abby’s things, including the puzzlebox.

The residents of Salem gather at the Horton Centre before the prayer vigil. Alice tells Bo that the Bradys and Hortons were linked together forever when he married Hope. When Shawn-Douglas arrives he goes straight to Gina, who hurriedly and sadly redirects him to Bo and Billie. Gina calls the station to see if there has been any news about the puzzlebox. Jennifer, Peter and Jack arrive with the box, but Gina does not see it. Billie still feels immense guilt at keeping the truth about Hope from Bo and Shawn-Douglas. Jennifer and Peter volunteer to stay at the Horton house and babysit everyone’s children. Gina offers to fetch Abby’s juice cup which is with the puzzlebox in the hall...
